It is time once again, for the annual Chimp Challenge. This forum will give all details and information you need to know. It is a world-wide folding contest held once a year that started between a couple of teams and has now grown to a large size. The original start date was May 5th, 12PM PST. Currently the start date is finalized for May 15th. The decision was mainly to avoid any complications with the HPCS. The winner each year has the prestige of displaying the jaded monkey. This contest, although competitive by nature is meant to raise awareness for folding and to bring new folders on board and to persuade old folders to rejoin the community; and it is ultimately for science. The contest is not hinged on a few high PPD folders but on as many folders who can donate their time for 10 days. EVGA has participated for four years now and we have won once, in 2010. This year we hope to make a turn around and win the jaded monkey once again. Our team name is EVGApes. For this contest you will have to configure your clients and change the username to the team name. This allows us to keep track of the points of everyone who is folding for the contest. There will be further instruction posted on how to do this. Keep in mind that this is for science. It is a small sacrifice to give up 10 days of your own username to help with the research that folding supports. To the best of knowledge the particpating teams this year will be: EVGA OCF ( http://www.overclockers.com/) OCN ( http://www.overclock.net/) OCAU ( http://forums.overclockers.com.au/) HWC ( http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/) TPU ( http://www.techpowerup.com) TSC! ( http://tsc.overclockers.ru/fah.html) MPC ( http://www.maximumpc.com/) CPC&B ( http://forums.bit-tech.net/) EVGA_RobB Hi guys, I can confirm that "Amnesty" will be the same as before (like last year). Should you have any questions, please email or PM me. Also, We should be able to do a rotating banner. Please refer the above comment on the amnesty should anyone question it. Remember, this is only given if you normally meet the point requirements (in prior months). Thanks, Rob Here are the rules for CC 2012: 1. The points will be determined by a categorized system that will measure overall performance, team growth, and a conversion category that figures the amount of points run under the CC usernames. The exact details of this system will be posted later for any to view. 2. Start time for the contest is Tuesday, May 15th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7). The finish for the contest is Friday, May 25th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7). 3. The victor gets to claim the lucky jaded monkey as the prize. Tales have been told of untold wealth and fame that comes with this. The victorious team is allowed to display in any honorary fashion the jaded monkey, the losing teams are forbidden to display it. The losing teams are bestowed the dreaded monkey's paw, which is said to be cursed. People have been known for have very bad luck with this paw! 4. In the event of a close race, a Stanford daily_user_summary.txt file will be the official source for points information. 5. Only team captains are allowed to make changes to rules and will be looking out for any "foul play". We should not do anything that hurts the folding project. This includes but is not limited to, priming WUs and installing clients on machines without proper permission. Starting wus before the start of the CC is fine, but stopping clients just so that a wu drops after the start is considered bad folding conduct. Also having a machine idle after the change of names for longer than necessary just so that the next wu drops within the first few hours is discouraged. If a team is found out doing this they may be disqulified from this years and next years Chimp Challenge. So try to keep your clients as close to their "natural flow" as possible. I´ll change over my smp/bigadv clients already a couple of days early. 6. The official folding names are: OCF - T32monkeys MaxPC - maximum_monkey OCAU - Monkey_Bollocks OCN - OCNChimpin EVGA - EVGApes CPC & bit-tech - Custom Bit Chimps Hardware Canuks - Beavers_Gone_Bananas TSC! Russia - TSCh!mp Tech Power Up - ChimPowerUp Here is how you can participate in the 2012 Chimp Challenge: 1) First, you must re-configure all your folding clients before May 15, 2012: - If you´re already folding for team EVGA, all you have to do is change your username to EVGApes before the contest starts on May 15th. If you´re also folding smp/bigadv WUs, see the further info below.
- If you´re already folding, but for a different team and want to help us (thank you, very much appreciated
), change your username to EVGApes and team number to 111065 before the contests starts on May 15th. - If you are new to folding, we extend a warm welcome to you!! The fastest and easiest way to get folding is Stanford's folding client. Have a look in here and use EVGApes as username and 111065 as team number. If you have any questions or issues do no hesitate to ask. You'll find everyone here quite friendly and eager to help get you up and running!

Ill ask the CC thread about prizes. Hopefully I get word back soon, its been unusually dead.

you can fold as long as you want during the CC for EVGApes so come in when you want... and stay as long as you can Id prefer the entire duration but every little bit helps. It's better than NOT having a person fold for the EVGApes during it the only thing is qualifying for prizes if you are late

I assume like last year we take a screenshot of you folding for EVGApes with a time data - for purposes of qualifying for prizes (if we have them - there was talk of taking prizes out in the CC forums) otherwise we don't....because everything is under EVGApes as for EVGA they would forgive 1 tier but not both (if you could make it normally)...that's if EVGA will still offer that as well since the CC is only 10 days that leaves 20 days for regular folding to earn your tiers (if you came up short on the second they would forgive) if you could only make the one normally they would grant the one provided you fold for the rest of the month and came up short

It doesn't seem as organized as our last contest and considering that was my only contest I've attended so far, everything is still very new to me. I don't know what you mean by tiers. I take a screenshot of my program with username/wu's in progress with wu's txt logs for date info? How much different is the prize thing works across all teams? I'm stepping in with both feet in the water to understand this new contest lols..

Last year EVGA granted amnesty for those that participated in the CC, since its 1/3 of the month that you are folding under a different username. It helps resolve the issue with those who still want their EVGA bucks. As for prizes.... There will be no organized prizes from the CC this year, if an individual team wants to reward itself, then that is their perogative. Too many other things came up in the discussions this year for anyone to worry about prizes until it was too late, plus a lot of the teams stated that they were too small/ poor to really sponsor anything this year.

Ah well. HPCS was a big help for me to hit 1 million for two months now. I'm going back down to maybe 20k-30k, or less cause of rising weather temperatures. Also I haven't been getting the 3800 point wus anymore. I've been getting project 8008 I think with about 2500 points each so my production will plummet too. Not to mention ill be on vacation may 1st till the 9th do my rig will be offline. Gonna milk out the hpcs to keep me balanced n cut it before they start billing on the 10th.

It makes me sad...

Ah yea. I be sweating like I'm in a sauna lol. I'll miss those 3800 points but surely not the extra heat they produced. But those 15hour gpu wu's were horrid. Anywho. How far off were we in the previous years? Since we only took 1st place once, a bit curious on how much I should just push it since I'm only a part time folder.

Here's the stats page from last year. The points system was a little too biased in favor of the small teams though. As far as raw points the only team that can come close to equaling us is OCN. And they are actually doing a pretty good job. Theyre #3 in the overall points standings for folding and they almost match us for daily production. Edit: sorry forgot to attach the link haha

Update: Here is the point system for CC 2012 for those that wish to see it... A "Chimp Points" system will be used to determine the placings as follows: Points system:
• There will be three categories - Points, Growth and Conversion:
Points are the # of millions each team produces (120,000,000 is 120 points). Growth is based off of last year's CC production (essentially, the handicap system we used last year). Conversion is the amount of points made by the team by their CC user (so monkey_bollocks points/OCAU points*100).
• Each category will be "normalised" as follows: Example numbers
Team A - 120 Team B - 84 Team C - 47 Team D - 103
We take the range (max-min, which = 73). We then use this formula = (points*100/range).
So the scores become:
Team A - 164.4 Team B - 115.1 Team C - 64.4 Team D - 141.1
Finally, we subtract the lowest score (64.4) from all teams, to bring the points into a 10-110 range (10 for lowest team, 110 for highest team):
Team A = 110 Team B = 50.7 Team C = 10 Team D = 76.7
• We add up the totals for each category, and the team with the most points across all three categories wins.

My limited mathematics understanding about the categories after undergoing the rigorous process of "normalisation" treatment are as follow:- 1. Points are the # of millions each team produces (120,000,000 is 120 points) ... Great for us. 2. Growth is based off of last year's CC production (essentially, the handicap system we used last year) ... Worst for us. 3. Conversion is the amount of points made by the team by their CC user (so monkey_bollocks points/OCAU points*100) ... Bad or perhaps, slim to no chance for us. The prediction is;- Mid-size team that has been slowing down production since last year and also, is able to recruit more new/past folders just for this contest wins nonetheless, let's go out there and do our best so that we can put forth a remarkable challenge to bring back "the jaded monkey". Good luck!, we really need it!

I think most people (across all Teams) just want to come out and play in Chimp Challenge regardless if the formulas work for or against them. That is how I'm approaching CC 2012 too this year. I'm interested to see what kind of Monster Number we can lay down when we put our Rigs to it! IIRC, in CC 2011, that number was over 120M for 10 days efforts in the heat of May...pretty sweet all by itself! We just laid down almost 793M in March 2012 alone. So if we all come out to play, we should be able to raise the roof on last years achievement! If we win, lose or even place last, I'm OK with it this year...

My opinion... Let's stay positive. We are not in the contest to win a trophy, we are in it for humanity to win. I say we go at this hard to get old folders back and new folders in the fold. TO heck with the trophy. That lasts 20 minutes. Killing Cancer lasts a lifetime!!!

Yes, AB just reminded me of something I thought was hilarious from over in the OCN Forum the other day. A similar discussion of contest fairness was transpiring and the heat was building up when one of the members basically said " get a grip, for crying out loud the grand prize is a picture of a monkey"! I laughed out loud when I read that and it was really a good reminder that "it's just a contest, keep some perspective".
