Here is my story,

I was reading the forums here and saw that an OP had said that Windows only saw some of his RAM.  I had recently changed from Corsair Dominator to Mushkin Redline(?) and never checked to see if Windows was seeing it all (Both Eleet and CPU -Z (?)did)  lo and behold when I check it saw 12 gb (7.99 usable)  So I started playing around with it.  I eventually replaced the Mushkin with the Corsair and Windows now sees and uses it all.

But something happened along the way since now my screen will freeze after a minute or two.  No BSOD just a hard freeze.  When I reboot (by pressing the reset button) I get some other weird things happening.  A couple of times I got a "No disk" error when it flashed through the startup BIOS screens.  Once I went into the BIOS and both of my SSDs were gone and yes they are on the Marvel controllers but have been fine for 18+ months.  Then I would press reset again and they would be back and the machine would boot only to freeze again. I have tried system restor with no luck.

I have also updated to another 680 in SLI this week and wonder if the video driver could be corrupted.  I have downloaded a copy of it and will try to reinstall it when I get home later.

The other thing is that I cannot read any de bugging codes since they are not being saved.  I have tried various software programs but it seems that recording the BSOD on my rig has been turned off and everything I have tried to do to turn it back on has failed.

-Any ideas guys?  I am pretty sure my power supply is good.

Could it be some other kind of hardware going? M board, SSd etc?

-Is there something in the BIOS I may be missing.  I did change the voltage and timing back when I switched the RAM but maybe I missed something.

I knew I shouldn't have messed with it.  That's what I get for reading the forums all the time!

Thanks

    Ok,
I have turned back my overclock.
     I ran SFC /Scannow.
I tried to repair/upgrade windows while in safe mode (it wouldn't let me do it for a few reasons)
I turned off all startup and services in Ms config.
I removed half of my RAM.
I am going to swap out some of the RAM and see if that works. EDIT: Tried one stick no go. Tried another same thing.
But I  am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.  Now when it starts up I get a beep and then once it freezes, I get a buzzing sound that I did not get before.
EDIT: buzzing sound was only happening when I was playing Solitare to test it and it froze.  It does not happen during a "normal" freeze up.
EDIT:  I pulled one 680 out and prior to that reinstalled the drivers.
EDIT:  I have tried all three types and brands of RAM with no luck.
EDIT:  It seems that safemode works without any freezes but I am unsure what if anything this means.

    Any ideas anyone????
I could really use some help here.

Then Try to use drive sweeper and remove all nvidia drivers, turn off and on system, see if you have any issues with the default VGA graphic drivers, If not reinstall Nvidia drivers and see if yor problems return.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I am thinking of installing a seperate hard drive and installing Windows on it to see if it still freezes.  That may tell me whether it is a hardware or software problem. If it runs then  I know to reinstall Windows on my SSD.  I will try driver sweeper first.
    Thanks.

Hello Randolla, sorry for the delay but you got me when I was out of the office.
OK, for an X58, usually seeing 7.99 out of 12gb is normally caused by one of 2 things.
    1)   Need to set memory manually in the BIOS, and there are a couple additional settings to set as well.  First enter the voltage and latency of the RAM manually, per the specs on the memory itself.  Once that is done, within Frequency and Voltage Control set MCH Strap to DRAM Ratio, from there go into Memory Feature, and way at the bottom, there is a value tRL, set that to +2, save and exit, see if BIOS is seeing all the RAM at bootup.  If the issue persists, or you are still seeing 7.99 you may need to reseat the CPU and inspect for Bent socket pins, I know it can sound a bit absurd from out of nowhere, but i have seen it happen many times since this series has been released.  Also, memory issues would explain the BSOD's too as those are typically memory or a software issue.

The test install on a different HDD is not a bad idea either, as that will definitely rule out software issue/OS corruption.

    randolla,

According to your posting you had this system in service for 18 months and you did not indicate that you were having any problems until after you exchanged your memory. You also indicated that on at least two separate instances that you had HDD issues. Could you have accidentally knocked loose or damaged the HDD cable causing intermittent issues? It wouldn't take but a few minutes to verify that all the connections are connected and if you have extra cable perhaps an exchange to rule out any HD cabling problems.
