Is it possible to force BOINC to store more computations in RAM before writing to disk? I don't appreciate hearing my HDD being accessed non-stop (if I get a bunch of WUs that are large in size)..

I think this is what you're looking for:  http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/PrefsReference  I think you're wanting to set the Disk Access interval to a larger value.  Also, you can enable the Leave Application in Memory setting to preserve your work in memory should Boinc ever pause that application instead of writing it to disk and recalling it later.

Note that some science applications have the disk access interval hard coded.  Also note that some sciences have a high amount of I/O when starting a work unit.  The Clean Energy Project is notorious for this.

None of us is as strong as all of us.

Thanks! I somehow missed that setting in the Preferences. That's what I get for not looking at it closely.

Clean Energy kills the HDD due to the huge file sizes; especially when you have a bunch of them running at the same time.

As a matter of fact, I've set the Disk Access parameter at an interval of 1800-sec and the result is; I don't hear any of my HDD purring or clicking sound at all anymore ...perhaps, a faint hissing noise can be detected occasionally but it's hardly noticeable.
