Hey folks,

I'm upgrading from a GTX 285 ( that I've had nothing but problems with.  It's been my first EVGA product, the company was nice enough to replace it a couple times, but it still crashes when running heavy (despite extensive testing and replacing of other hardware).

New product: GTX 550 Ti (

The problem?  My HDTV has only VGA and HDMI ports; no DVI.  Should I go mini-HDMI->HDMI or DVI->HDMI ?  Also, would I suffer any sort of performance hit?

A similar post asks about this conversion for audio-only ( but there isn't much discussed.

Hmm... That's actually a downgrade in game performance for games using DX10 or lower. The GTX 285 has 240 CUDA cores, while the GTX 550Ti only has 192. Memory wise, the GTX 285 may have only had GDDR3, it had a 512-bit memory interface over the GTX 550Ti's 192-bit memory interface using GDDR5.

I'd go mini-HDMI to HDMI. No worries on a performance hit.

    Cool, thanks for the advice.

This computer is to eventually become a donation to a family member when I moved out of the country.  When I return in the coming months, I plan on building out a much more powerful machine.

Still though, paying $130 for apparently poorer performance just to avoid the lock-ups is frustrating to think about.  I'll shop around a bit more.
