Hello guys,

I would like to welcome you to my project log, which shows you about my process at the project "Gaia".

This is (or plans to be, hehe), as you might know from the category, a mod rig.

I'll not explain everything and sometimes you might wonder why I post about things that ain't biggies, but after all its a log of my process and I don't force me to anything, so it might go on slower, faster, stop a while.. :-)

I don't post this to build something in a matter of short time or with an final goal before my eyes, it is more a process of change, growing. I have ideas, thousands of them, and I'm going to try out some. Let surprise hit us both! ;-)

Ah and by the way: I don't own a 1000$ camera, nor a photo studio, just a cheap 30$ cam, so don't expect super high resolution endless quality images.. but I try to catch what I want to show, and hope it's worth watching.

Another thing is, that I suffer (if you would call it that way) from perfectionism. This has good and bad sides. One of the bad sides is, that I might take much, much longer to create something, just because I don't want to leave any fingerprint, as example. Sounds funny but stresses one alot, really.

Lets begin. (They are from today night over there in europe so the project has basically just started, I'm awake since 24 hours and I don't want to write a long explanation for those right now, sorry. But if you got questions, just ask. :-)):

My cute dog:

Don't wonder about the stock boxed cooler, just temporary until the real deal is planned and created. :-)

Questions, critics, anything? Be welcomed!

    Hello Techsoldier,

that is an Lian Li PC-P80R, it was brought out several years ago as an limited "Ati-Edition" and is hardly available anymore new.

It is completely eloxated (anodized? I'm not native english, sorry) in a deep red/purple metallic which is unfortunately very hard to photograph in its true resemblance (the first photo there seems the most accurate).

Only some little accents like the slot grills are black factory default, but this will change, as I plan it as a red-black-Modrig with only a few other colors.

At the moment its basically just "stock", like every beginning. :-) But don't worry, it might go slow but persistent in the modrig direction.

    Hello JingleHell,

hehe, thanks for the comment, yes, its my dog and same time best friend (they are really good friends and trustworthy, laughts). :-)

By the way, I wonder what the ribbon means and how I got it but thanks alot. :-) Have to search about them in the FAQ I guess.

Love the AMD Lian Li's. But to be honest I would steal the Husky before your comp. I want a Husky so bad. Very nice looking computer though.

    Hello guys,

thanks alot for the friendly feedback! :-) I've told my dog the friendly words you wrote about her and she said "wooooooOoOoOoooooo!", (sounds a bit like a siren as huskys don't bark often but howl). ;-)

And thanks, Stratosrally, for the information about the ribbon!

I have to do some RL-stuff right now but trying out some ideas regarding the cable management "dry" (just to test if it would work and how it looks) later the day.

I like the look of sleeved cables but I think the "sleeve each cable independent in some color" is used pretty often nowadays, so I'll try to find an own solution which adds something new while keeping the advantages of sleeving (protection, good looking).

Might check the future hotplug-HDD-bays out, too (just got to me) for the customizability and mindstorm about how the black-red-colorscheme of the front (or better: the 5,25" bays) should be pattern-wise.

Pictures will follow over day. :-)

sweet dog . I love huskies/malamutes, they are one of my favorite breeds. Super friendly and smart too. Nice rig. I don't know what I'm more jealous of, the dog or the 580 classified.

    Hello Asicam24,

yea, they are nice and smart but also having a strong own will and are clever in tricking humans into doing them favors. They're one of the most natural bred compared to wolves, so even if they look cute, they can hunt and kill very efficient.

So no dogs for people that like it if their dog follows every stupid command just to please them.

I like animals with an free will and alot of energy - and I like it cold, so they fit perfect. :-)

    Back to topic:

I checked the Hotplug-HDD-trays and they're very nice, indeed. One thing annoyed me: The dual hard-soldered power cables.

So I decided to modify the PCBs and think about another power supplement possibility without hard attached cables.

I hate lead-free "RoHS-complicant" solder, it's the pure crap! Luckily I have enough good solder here for the next 200 years. :-)

A little tip: If you can't unsolder something because of the 350-450°C needing cheap "RoHS-Solder", just add a drop of fresh solder with kolophonium inside, this'll make the desoldering ways easier.

The desoldering only took 6 minutes but to remove the yellow silicone without scratching the PCB took almost a hour. I removed the sticker, too - after my modification warranty is gone, anyways.

There are some fingerprints and solder fluid remainings but those will vanish before reassembling. :-)

Thats it for now, I've ordered some (alot...) sleeve today and some other stuff as new Noiseblocker fans, but have to wait for them now..

I'll probably check my wonder box for a power plug solution for the trays and if I find something usable, later update the process. :-)

This is brilliant man, Sehr geile kiste und ein liebe Husky man!
so yeah my German can get around, as you can see

Love your Husky though  Auuuwwww so Cutes!
She reminds me of Max from the cool film 8 Below Even that Max was a male Husky

Btw is that soundcard an Auzentech X-Fi Home Theater 7.1 or a Bravura 7.1?

Auzentech simple rocks when it comes to sound cards., they are know to make the best high quality sound cards on the market.

I have their X-Fi Prelude 7.1 & X-Fi Forte 7.1, these have Hardware DSP's same as the Home Theater 7.1 has, as where the Bravura does have a full size plug for the headphones but no hardware DSP.
The all have upgradable OPAMPS and Studio quality circuit boards and components.

But yeah this build is gonna look awesome! Doesn't this case have a spider as side window?

Hello Pyrebuilder and Gold Leader, thanks for your kind words and wishes! :-)

@Gold Leader: Hehe, your german is nearly perfect!
I've watched 8 below (german title: Antarctica - Gefangen im Eis) several times, its a very nice movie!

Yes, that's a Auzentech X-Fi Hometheater HD. Their soundcards are really nice and they offer even better working drivers than Creative itself (and better support). Creatives hardware rocks, but their driver support sometimes makes you triple facepalm..

Unfortunately you can only swap out the front channel OpAMP on this one but the used parts are already very high quality so its fine for me. :-) Maybe soldering the other channels OpAMPs would be possible, didn't try that yet.

Edit: ah forgot about the spider: Yes, the standard side panel has a spider window and ATI CFX logo but I ain't using that one. After all it will be a mainly black-red mod rig with some silver accents. :-)

I'll use completely black sidepanel replacements and modify/cut them myself (with the help of some friends machines as my cnc router project is stopped for a long time).

Just a minute ago someone ringed my door. :-)

I thought: "Fantastic! I got my own fans!" - and I was right:

I'm proud of my fans and wish them a long life!

So the sleeving of the front fans (just black sleeve) can begin soon (after I got some sleep).

    Hi guys,

little update: Trying out my ideas (not cut/shrink'd exactly, just garbage parts):

Still waiting for some parts, orders, etc. while playing around with "new" sleeve ideas which break with the 1-color-per-cable-standard.

In the "real deal" you won't see the cable color through. :-)

Edit: And one more tryout, thistime with heatglue-shrink, to prevent the short sleeve parts from moving.. ah and color fitting cables. ;)

Edit: Some fan connector cable sleeving (right = before, Noiseblocker standard cable, left two cables = afterwards, those are just for the front door so just black (stealth color :-D). Other side from the cables is not yet done, waiting for parts to measure the needed length. :-)

    Hello,

    thanks @ccasimir!

After a long time I finally got enough time and money to (re)build "Gaia", now with a x79 platform.

Unfortunately not an EVGA x79 motherboard as those disappointed me somewhat.

But doesn't matter, it's not about brands at all but about what one wants to build (in my opinion).

I bought some small parts available from Lian Li, even as I hate "toolless" designs, there was ONE thing which I found pretty amazing for quick interchanging addon-cards: The toolless PCI(e) holder/switches.

I also mounted a nice set of black rolls, unfortunately those were not available anywhere in the EU so it costed me around double its original price to get them in the black version imported from USA.

But as I like fitting looks and the case deserves it, I went this way instead of silver rolls.

I also finally got my new PSU, the Enermax PlatiMax 1500W, which will get sleeved cables, as time comes (around 30 projects parallel - too much for big steps at one time. ).

I added a few pictures to show the small changes, more will come as I get other parts and time to change things. By the way, finally got the 580 Classy backplate mounted and the right (intact) stainless steel M2,5 black oxide screws for it to fit purr-fectly (remember kids: keep the original screws for potential RMA cases! ).

that GTX 580 Clasy looks sweeeet man with that backplate :) I sold  my two EVGA GTX 580 Super Clocked Editon 1.5GB's today, ready for something new, although my EVGA GTX 480 is one that shall never leave my place hehe , so I also updated my due to this
My main system has an ATi Dpeartment AMD Raderon HD 6990 PCI-E 4096MB 512Bit GDDR5 Rev.A12 1102 [ In Practical 2x 2048MB 256Bit GDDR5] as temporal solution, this is actually a card I have part of my massive VGA collection archive But it's always handy as a backhand solution

As for your case, there are black colored sidepanels for it with window kits like this one:

    http://www.lian-li.com.tw...dex=29&ss_index=73

I have a similar side panel window kit on my Lian Li PC-7FN, thereby making it a Lian Li PC-7FNW

This might be an idea for your side panel window kit, unless you plan making one yourself, that would be way cool too

    Hi Guys!

@Jeffsmoky728: Hehe, yea she's very cute but from time to time a real pighead! But most of the time she's very nice.

@Gold Leader: Hehe, yes the Classifieds look good but I wonder whats the difference between the Classified and Classified Ultra except the higher clocks.. probably nothing.

I got the Lian Li sidepanels in black already (2 years ago hehe), without windows.. but will cut my own ones with a friends CNC mill/router or an laser cutter. Your sidepanel fits very well and looks good! I just don't want to buy another sidepanel if I have some there already, so I'll see what to cut in them.

But to decide the final window layout I first need to position the stuff inside, so I know what the windows should show if one looks through.

I hope my mainboard gets "released" (more like shipping ready) there quickly, its planned for tomorrow, so I might have it monday. But they moved the date already 4 times.

Well this idea might be handy for your 580 Classifieds:

Side duct fan also can blow cooled air on to the VGA card but it can also extract hot air out of the case, all youi have to do is place the fan in the direction you want the airflow to go :)

This Lian Li side fan is called:
Lian Li BS-02, more info about it here:
    http://forums.vr-zone.com...li-bs-02-side-fan.html

With my setup, the BS-02 is blowing cooled air on to the HD 6990, since the HD 6990 has no side air ducts that eject out hot air

If your GTX 580 Classified do have side exhausts for hot air the BS-02 can do you a lot of good, as it did whan I had 2x EVGA GTX 295 Red Editions in Quad SLI:

As you can see these cards have side exhausts:

The Lian Li BS-02 was the ultimate solution for these GTX 295 RE's and if your cards don't have dorsal exhausts like these do you just remove the fan from the BS-02 and make it blow cool air on the VGA cards that are located in their PCI-E slots

So this might be an outcome for your solution also :)
