Is that a good idea we have smokers in the house and the fins look smoke layered.

    Distilled white vinegar works well for tobacco residues. Don't know that acetone would work too well. Alcohol might work.

    +1 on the alcohol. The higher the percentage the better.

    I have had to do this a few times in the past when I lived with smokers.  Alcohol never really did a good job since youre tryingto remove an oily tar. I found that hot very soapy water (use Dawn) and let it soak for about 20 min then use the hand srayer on the sink, if you have one. If not then use the shower and blast the crap out of it.

     let it dry and done.

    acetone leaves a film behind it if you buy the cheap stuff. but if you get the higher grade it works VERY well for cleaning sticky stains. i used to use it for cleaning rubbery glue off boat hulls. use it lightly and it wouldnt even hurt the gel coat.

    I've used acetone before and it worked well, may just want to clean off any residue after the fact.

    I have tried detergents and soaking a CPU to remove all traces of thermal grease fine.
    This also works fine for the heatsink (fan removed)
    As for the fan, replacements are cheap on eBay

    I use ArctiClean to clean contact surfaces.  I dont see why acetone wouldnt work, it has a low flashpoint and it should dry residue free.

    I don't know, I am not sure it is pure enough to not leave some kind of crud behind.

    If it were 100% acetone possibly, but I don't think you could buy that, not like I buy much acetone in the first place tho
