What are you wanting to use it for? I think that would help with suggestions.

Get the SR2-Mobo start from there.  What are the reasons for you to have a server in your house?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Always ask yourself this question when making a server, well at least I do.

1. purpose  ( File server, application, web, test box, folding)
2. cost limit or how much you want to drop.
3. length of life span / can I upgrade it later
4.  Home brew or a pre built server ( HP, IBM, Dell just to name 3) there are uses for each. really boils down to personal preference.
5. time willing to troubleshoot with the unit.*

*now 5 may not seem too important but honestly, I have found it much easier to get a used server, and just upgrade the parts to what I need. keep in mind taking almost any (dell, HP or IBm) server that is relitavly recent you can get the ram , and hard drives mostly cheap and keep it running for a lot less than a new computer. now that being said there is a steep learning curve if you never played with raid configs, and learning the finer points of hardware replacement and firmware updates on server grade hardware. Most of these time, they are redundant and hot swappable out of the box, so multiple components can fail and the server can keep chugging along ( Although this is not a desirable thing have happen it does save you most of the time for 24x7 up time)

Its just my opinion but I love rack mount PC's It is a space saver and a heck of a lot easier to work on quickly. I recommend some HP rack mount servers, depending on what you are using it for you can pick up some fairly cheap ones and build it to your spec. such as DL 320 G4's ( http://h18000.www1.hp.com...12365_na/12365_na.html )  they take Sata/SAS drives, and currently I have 3 running with 2 TB drives in each so 4 TB in a 1U. of course it is not officially supported by HP because your not using official hp branded drives, but they do work :-) just don't tell anyone I told you hahaha. you can even get SSD's to work in them. Ebay and Craig list are good places to get them as well as local auctions, most businesses are dumping anything pre Gen 5's and occasionally you can get your hands on g5's either DL 380's, or DL 360's, I prefer the DL 360's because they are 1U. Both support VT-X if your into virtualization like I am ;-).

Although It does depend on what  the server is preforming. Maybe you would be better just making a good computer based on a strong motherboard with tuns of Sata connections or a good raid card. we really need to prob get a better idea of the goal to guide you in the best direction. but if these  servers will work for you, just ask me any questions you have. I love them and its what i do.

Re:BUILDING A SERVER COMPUTER Thursday, July 21, 2011 2:15 PM (permalink)
I am using a free amd motherboard and CPU I got for free from a very nice person on this forum... I popped in an extra 4gb of ram I had... and loaded it with hard drives. I got my Server 2008 for free from college... and I am using this as a web server, storage, ftp, and now exchange server with no problems.

I suggest going to a local goodwill and you might find something capable of what you are wanting to do. Depending if you need this to run 24/7 or if you turn your main pc off... you could also just do this on your current pc...

Re:BUILDING A SERVER COMPUTER Thursday, July 21, 2011 2:34 PM (permalink)
thanks for the prompt.
The reason why I'm planning to build a new server is because of our office server (dell/windows server 2003) is getting old and most our future software updates will not support SQL 2000 (a direct result of Microsoft discontinuing support of SQl server 2000). Therefore we must update our server to SQL server 2005 or SQl server 2008.
The main purpose of the server would be file server (heavy) and applications, as 9 other pcs would depends on it.  And it has to be online 24/7 since our office requires real time updates/ data transmitting/ and etc...

Re:BUILDING A SERVER COMPUTER Thursday, July 21, 2011 2:45 PM (permalink)
That being said go with a HP Server since I'm assuming you already have a rack that the old server is in along with KVM and other networking gear. Have them go out and buy a DL360 or DL380 G5 (http://h18000.www1.hp.com...476_div/12476_div.html )  ~dual Quad CPUs's e5345 will work for intense database loads ) I just picked up 2 for a killer deal at $75 for both shipped on Ebay last week for one of my servers. The costs are not that bad (~$400 for dual dual cores - ~$1200 for dual Quad cores on ebay with a quick look ) and the performance and reliability is great. Then get yourself some 15k SAS drives 146gb and raid 10 for the OS even with the lowest raid card available in both HP models, it would be the 200i which supports 4 drives, the 400i will get you the full 6 on the DL360 and the 380. you can also you can get yourself a external shelf, such as an MSA 70 to get your more storage and expand it later, or even an MSA 60 if you want SATA / SAS 3.5 hdds not 2.5 SFF drives. then if you needed space and not speed get some 1 TB 2.5 SFF laptop hard drives and put them in the MSA 70 for up to 25 TB of storage. but this is just a cheaper alternative to super expensive SAS disk.

thats what im doing currently

cheers

To further add to the answer to your question, you as far as I know cannot buy them New from HP (g5 servers or older, maybe a reseller that has one unopened) Unless you get a newer G6, G7 and soon to be G8 servers, And they are not cheap upwards of 5,000+ for a decent config.

For the things you need it to do used will work, so long as you check it with the disk i will link below. There is a disk, called Smart Start that have a diagnostic hardware test that will run the entire server through its paces and fully test every piece of hardware on the serer. You can freely download this and the newest firmware from Hp site, or if you buy a new server, you can have them mailed out with them. They really are the bread and butter of the server, it has a streamline install process and array managment suit, aswell as iLO with is a out of band managment configuration uitlity that you can use to remotly power on and off the unit. very neat stuff. you can read more about it here. also HP's have diagnostic boards on them that show status of internal components, and can be configured to send out emails when parts go bad or are detected failing.
