any one else try the new 980, looks like it has the same turbo issue as the 970, stays on a 25 multiplier.
( did boot right ( after change and BIOS entry)  up though with a 160 clock for 25x160. ) for a 4.0 everything in auto except memory. )

I really don't see the point in anyone getting the 980 over the 970
Newegg has the 980 $20 more then the 970 and it's only 13MHz faster

Yes, but the 980 will replace the 970, so if you want the 970 get it while you can. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Intel-Core-i7-980-Six-Core-CPU-Released-208165.shtml
It's like what is the point of getting the 930 over the 920. ( only you can not get the 920 any longer)  Either way it looks like both the 970 and the 980 have turbo issues in the EVGA board.
    Anyway this is 980X:

    And 980:

Thats what I am hoping to find out, but there is not a lot of info, since the chip has been out about two weeks.
If all I am loosing is a 1X multaplier, I'll leave it as is, not worth breaking down the system and going a week or two to gain 160-200 Hrz.

I just got an i7 980 this Saturday at a local convention and it runs fine so far in my E757 LE board. Turbo works fine going to the 26x multi.

I suspect that the boards that had issues with the 970 and turbo are going to have issues with the 980 since it's virtually the same chip. The E759 and E760 classified boards needed a simple mod done to them for turbo to work on them but the rest of the boards worked fine with the CPU and turbo.

Interesting. That would be the 980 ES ("Engineering Sample"). I have read that ppls were getting some on ebay, but no details on the oprtn/specs. They are non-EE (as you know), so have a limited multi. I can't find any info on the Intel website about them.

$600 actually. Yeah, I had just checked two weeks ago, about 6/29, and it wasn't there at that time. Apparently it is a new listing. It's still not on the Intel site (doesn't come up in search). Damn time flies.

    Re:New 980 NON-EX Monday, July 11, 2011 5:13 PM (permalink)
Just received a e-mail from J Freeman and yes it needs the mod to go from 25 to 26 actuality E-leet shows 27, but I can not confirm it would do it.

But CPU without the mod only shows:

Still haven't decided if it's worth a tear down and send off. I am also considering 1866 or 2000 memory, to allow more OC, the 25 multiplier is limiting, but 1866 would pair well, Might go 2000 and try to lower latency. but have not seen a lot of 2000 speed memory in the 6's. ( from what I hear the 980 is the replacement for the 970, and a 995X will eventuality replace the 980X. ( and yes 6 core )
Anyone have any recommendations for tight timing low latency memory, preferable 3x4G.
