 Hi:

My actual Sr-2 configuration includes 2x Intel Xeon E5606 Westmere-EP 2.13GHz 4 cores, 48GB of memory in 6 sticks, and Nvidia Quadro 4000.

This machine is specially required to manipulate individual 1GB photo scans in Photoshop 5. I am already thinking of upgrading the CPU's and was wondering first, in the list of XEONs that fit the SR-2, which one gives the more bang for the buck. I am not  after the last bit of performance but I would like to work faster. So that's my first question.

Second, having 48GB (although I have an issue with intermittently showing 40GB) makes me believe that  memory is not the bottleneck. Do you agree with that or do you believe more memory would improve the situation (yes, if I solve my 40/48GB problem. Actually, the new processors might help in this regard)?

Thanks

    1. Look here for Intel's specs of processors for their Xeon 5500/5600 line, you'll find that certain processors can support certain memory sizes, but you'll be limited by whatever SR-2 can support from internal tracer-wiring.
    2. Just make up some kind of math: gather up the prices are all the CPU types you may consider limited by budget, calculate their the ratio of frequency multiplied by number of cores then divide by MSRP, then choose the CPU with the highest ratio per your budget.  This logic could only makes sense for fully-multi-threaded programs, I assume you use nothing but in your system.
    3. That said, the only real feature that makes SR-2 stand out against all other i5520 chpset boards is the fact that you can overclock the processors.  So, have you tried doing that?  There no rule how much you should even if you tried, but the higest on average with proper aftermarket cooling is a Blck of 200Mhz from 133Mhz stock, or about 3.2GHz for your quads, which may push up your RAM speed depending on settings.   CPU and RAM speed are tied together.  Read up on overclocking with SR-2 on these forums, ask questions.  I'm sure getting your parts at least 25% faster should net some decent gains while having your system last a few years, but it's up to you.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

The masses usually go with one of these:

E5620 - cheapest available quad with hyperthreading
    E5645 - cheapest available hexacore
    X5650 - cheapest X-series hexacore
    X5690 - flagship

I'm not well versed with the performance of photoshop, but I'd imagine the difference for what you have to a E5620 would be negligible. E5645's really are quite the bargain.A pair gets 12C/24T for around $1100. The X-series is nice, but probably not worth the extra price. A pair of X5650's will run you over $2000, and the X5690's over $3400.

I bought a pair of used X5650 engineering samples on ebay for $450 each.

I got them overclocked to 3.8-4.2 GHz at various levels of stability. (Your mileage may vary) but I resold them, because they didn't seem to support the 1333 memory divider.

+1 to this...I might soon be in the market for a used pr of 5645's

E5645 has the best performance/price ratio without doubt, I have 2xE5645 running at 3800MHz air cooled, the extra 700MHz of the x5690 will cost 2500$ more.

EVGA SR2 at 200 Bclk, default voltages
    2xXeon E5645 at 3800MHz Turbo on, default voltages, 2xCoolerMaster V6GT
    2x24Gb Kit GSkill Ripjaws 9-9-9-24 1600MHz  (12x4Gb)
    4xZotac GTX480 Quad-SLI, default clocks and voltages
    2x WD Caviar Black 2Tb 7200 RPM
    Silverstone Strider ST1500W
    LianLi V2120X

The best performance and money wise xeon u could probably get would be the 5650 easily overclockable and the most affordable out of the 6 core series i personally have 2 and cant be more pleased with them they run cool and overclock very well so.

    Setup:
    Mobo: Evga SR-2

Not sure on your budget but my two E5620 HT Quads run nicly at 3.4 with temps below 60*C at constant peak load with Corsair H70 coolers.  They are probably your best bang for buck with out getting ES chips.  They are typically about $389.99 each from newegg I think.  the 6 core chips are nice but the cheapest retail one (the 5645) is about $650 I think.

4 slot SLI/Xfire mobo with great OC possibilety.
To run 1 video card, and 2 xeons on standard speeds ?
Should have gotten faster xeons and a Z8NA-D6 then :P

Oh and i would go for a 5645 they are about 450,- Euro here.
    Around 500 in the USA

At standard speeds they run faster then 3 of the cpu's u got now.
    8 vs 12 cores.

Another vote for E5645's.  They're by far the most value for your money in the hexacore lineup.

Mine have been running cool and stable at 3.7ghz (195 BCLK) for 4 months so far.
