Alright, so I got a new graphics card today. It is a huge upgrade from my years old PNY xk-something or other. But the problem i'm having is that it's NOT a big upgrade. I've installed video cards before so i'm not completely clueless.

After I threw in the new card, I downloaded all neccessary drivers and updated directx, and it is working. I'm certainly noticing sharper color and edges. The issue i'm having is that when I opened up and started playing a game, world of warcraft specifically, it was running 20-40 fps as apposed to my last PNY card which gave me 60 fps all the time. I made sure the drivers for the PNY were uninstalled and nothing had changed, so I deleted and re-installed drivers for the GT 610 but still no dice.

So the question is, what am I missing? lol

20 fps sounds about right for a gt 610 in WoW (I was actually expecting a lot less). The gt 610 is about the same speed as a 9500 GT or 9400 GT (almost 5 year old cards).

Here's what you should be expecting (the gt 520 and gt 610 have the same exact specs): http://www.techpowerup.co...GeForce_GT_520/18.html

Vram doesn't mean speed. I would attempt to explain why it doesn't but I'd probably do so pretty poorly and just confuse you, so just know it doesn't mean how fast a gpu is lol.

Yeah, the gt 610 can't game. At all. I think intel integrated hd graphics are faster.

auraofjason is correct about the GT 610's performance.  Depending on where you purchased it, you may still be able to return/exchange it.  It would probably be worth paying the restocking fee.

It looks like the GT 610 is worth about $40 on Amazon.  If you're looking for another low priced card, I'd recommend a couple:
    1.  Radeon HD 6670 - ~$70
    2.  GeForce 650 - ~$80

These are by no means the only choices out there but these cards provide a lot of bang for the buck.

    Good luck!

It is important to know exactly what you had, before you pick the cheapest of the newest and assume it will be better.  What was the PNY card?  Also, did you change game settings with the new card?

Some folks assume newer stuff will handle higher details, so they crank it up, and get angry when performance frame rates aren't higher.  It has to be an apples-to-apples comparison, keep the same settings.

Nah...610 is really not even good enough for a decent PhysX card. 48 cores whereas the 650 has 348. It just a recycled GT 520 Fermi, not even a Kepler.

    I still wouldn't suggest a 650 or a 650Ti as a main gaming GPU.

OP should step it up to a 560Ti, 660, 660Ti, 7870Ghz, 7950 as bare minimum for gaming.

also, my budget is higher than $75 or so,  i'd say budget of $150 - $200, so any recommendations are welcome.

i haven't browsed for upgrades in the longest time, so i'm real lost. dunno what's good anymore lol

610 is not an upgrade from a 9800 gt I also would not go for the 650 lowest card I would go for is a 650ti I had that card for a few days and it does offer good performance bit pricer but on a budget it is a nice performing card.

Well if you want real good performance for a good price get the evga 660 for only about 50 dollars more then the 650ti it performs great. I have also had that card too I eventually settled on a gtx 660ti cause when my wife went to buy it for me for christmas it was on sale (but not a advertised sale) at best buy cheaper then newegg and the others.  The 660 is a nice card for not so much money.  Well I guess "not so much money"  is relative to your situation.  I though see it as great bang for the buck. By the way what cpu do you have.  I ask cause I am temporarily  running my gtx 660ti on an old phenom quad core running at 2.5 ghz and it has a big botle neck. Just one other thing to consider when buying graphics cards.  The biggest and baddest is not always the best for your situation.

I would go for a 650 ti, or a 660 if you can find one on sale.
