Im having a strange problem, I recently decided to hook up my GTX 570 Superclocked to my TV via HDMI, however the only output I get is Stereo. Now, my Samsung surround sound is hooked up to my TV and other things like my PS3/Blu Ray Player, Xbox 360, heck even my old Playstation 2 can output 5.1 surround sound just fine, and it works perfectly with all of those other devices, so it seems so strange to me a modern PC running windows 8 pro cant output 5.1 surround over a HDMI connection, Im fairly sure the GPU supports it. Any ideas? For ref Im running the geforce 306 drivers. Also my Surround sound system does not have a HDMI input, only Output so its not a case where I can plug the PC HDMI cable into the surround sound directly. Thanks

I'm assuming you are connect to a receiver than to the TV. If so, then you need to turn your receiver to Amp mode, if it has one, otherwise it's picking up the sound capabilities of your TV, which usually is stereo.

Actually my Setup is more like PC/PS3/etc to TV to Receiver, everything connects to my HDTV First.

How can I get it to output 5.1 or 7.1 then? The EDID for the TV may be accurate but it does not reflect the surround sound works properly despite connecting to the TV first.

The correct connection for Nvidia HD Audio would be HDMI (from the videocard) to your receiver, then from the receiver use the HDMI video out to your TV.

Then I dont believe he can do it The issue here is the bit rate, his TV can pass the reduced rates of his other equipment. But it cant handle the uncompressed signal. His TV is of course just stereo.

Thats so silly, My ancient PS2 right up to slimline PS3 can all pass 5.1 audio over just fine, and my nearly thousand dollar gaming PC cant? There is something very wrong with this.

I dont think you understand just what Audio quality is available using NV HD audio Its called bitstreaming. This is a completely different level of quality that requires -real- hardware to work. You must have the right equipment to use it properly It appears that your TV does not support the needed bandwidth, and that your receiver does not have the correct HDMI connections. Consoles are designed to use TV's and use (comparatively) low quality audio. Highend videocards and computers are enthusiast class products They are not intended for TV use. They -are- designed for computer monitors and high end HDMI bitstreaming using the correct receiver. *Note: if your TV has a TOS Optical -out- and your receiver has a TOS optical -in-, you might want to try and see if that will work. It all about the specs of your TV's internals and what quality can "pass thru" over what connections.

Hmm if my Video Card isnt intended for use as HTPC, what video card would you guys recommend to work as such? Maybe I am missing something though, I dont see why cheap stuff such as everyday DVD players and such can push through 5.1+ surround sound audio despite the HDTV's EDID but a PC cant be made to push it through also regardless. As far as am aware PS3 at least uses high quality surround sound, my Blu rays sound amazing going through the TV to my Samsung surround setup. I do think my TV does have Optical ports and I'll look into that solution, its just weird to me my setup works perfectly fine for Blu rays and PS3 games and every other thing I plug into it that use surround sound and my PC wont.

If you look at the audio set up in the control Panel using the Sound applet it will tell you what format and how many channels are available to the device connected to the HDMI output of your GPU. Such as...

Yes, I've seen that, and it says my TV only supports stereo, and that is accurate, but Windows doesnt seem to take into account the surround system thats plugged into the TV that does support dolby digital etc. I found something about EDID Overriding, so Im going to give that a try. For any who are curious, http://www.avsforum.com/t...g-issues-for-ati-5xxxs It seems those instructions could be adapted for NVIDIA cards.
