Hi,
I've changed the fan curve of my GTX 770 - but no matter what I do the fan speed won't drop below 41% (amended fan curve doesn't have any effect). The card is idling at 32 degrees, and fan at 41% is by far the loudest thing in my case -> any advice ?

Did you click the AUTO button.  I have my minimum set to 30.  Ambient temps a bit warm in Texas today...so as you see...my temp is 38, but normally it will read 30, until temp rises.

ussually aftermarket (especially dual fan) coolers don't have fan speed support unfortunately, that only works on the reference coolers.

I could be wrong though

Thanks for your replies guys,
Nite - if the ACX version indeed doesn't have fan control it would be very disappointing. Could someone confirm this ?
bobmitch - yup I've tried that, as well as all other options relating to fans.

When you installed the new card, did you do a complete Driver / Precision uninstall first?  Might be a leftover...

It was a brand new build today... so everything is new and fresh.

On my 670 FTW...there is a yellow line in the fan curve at 30% showing the hardware minimum.  Is it the same on the 770?

You Sir have solved the mystery !
There is the same line at around 41% - so that would be the minimum.

I've changed the fan curve to go above that and the card fans reacted to it - so the fans are controllable through the software - Nite - by posting that I actually thought that the reviewer might have been wrong rather than you.

I still don't get it - why is the minimum speed set at 40% when idling ? The fans at 40% are quite loud - I wouldn't notice it when playing, but when you want to sit and study it is quite annoying.

Look at the GPU and memory settings on the 770...That card is torqued up well beyond the 670 / 680.  My thought is that below the 40% and the card already starts getting warm.  40% may very well be where you can keep the card ldling at a reasonable temp.  Better safe than sorry.

Wow.. so many posts and you think aftermarket don't have fan control :D Pretty much every single graphics card has fan control, I've only heard of 1 or 2 really budget cards that don't.

To OP, from checking a couple of reviews it seems 41 percent is the lowest the evga ACX cooler goes which is just over 1300rpm. I can imagine this would be pretty audible. For comparison the palit 770 jetstream idles at 800rpm. It's not the first time evga has had idle noise levels far too high though. My evga 650 ti is pretty loud at its minimum fan speed but runs stupidly cool ( idles at ambient temperature )

Here is charts showing noise levels of the evga acx in idle compared to reference. To sum it up, evga card in idle is cooler but louder. Under load evga is quieter and cooler.

Wrong.. one review shows the evga acx locked at its minimum fan speed able to keep the 780 under 80 degrees at load. It could definitely be quieter in idle will no ill effect. These cards hardly use any power when not gaming, it wouldn't take much to keep them cool.

the 780 ACX runs 30c at idle, thats nothing.

Re:EVGA SC ACX 770 & EVGA Precision - Fan Curve / Control Problem 2013/06/04 18:32:05 (permalink)
The only explanation I can find is that for some reason EVGA wanted the minimum fan speed to be sufficient to run the card at full power without overheating (this 41%) - idiotproofing ?
The difference between 21.8 and 38.5 dBA (stock vs ACX) at idle is huge ! I am really dissatisfied with card's noise level at idle.

It would be great if EVGA could look into this and make some changes to drivers/software.

Bumping this thread.

I just purchased a 770 SC with ACX cooler and the idle fan noise is far too loud.  It's a bit disappointing that the ACX cooler is marketed as being on average quieter than the reference cooler but is far louder at idle as other people have mentioned.

It doesn't seem like the card even respects the same fan controls as other Kepler based cards in its bios, so I have no idea how to create a custom bios to minimize the noise.  Flashing with another vendor's bios might work, but I would greatly appreciate if EVGA would release an official firmware version to address this themselves.

Just build a new rig with 2X 770 with EVGA ACX cooler. Big mistake...
This is way to loud at idle, tried many ways to bypass to lower rpm speed, but this is ridiculous.
Some feedback or support from EVGA would be nice

I got my 770 SC ACX today and I'm quite disappointed about the noise with 41% fan-speed. I hope there will be a Bios with the possibility to set less fanspeed...

checked the bios, lowest fan speed is set to 25%...
so my guess is, that the fans can´t run lower speeds than 41%, am I right ?

HI Folks
Glad its not just me then,  just swapped this out for gtx480 which still served me well  but with my setup it was the only noise i heard. My new world of silence has been shattered at the first hurdle.  As suggested already i would hope evga will throw us a bios update to remedy this as the card spends 80% od the time reading email and updating my website.

Has anyone ever solved this? I want to try lowering the fan speeds before I go with a new heatsink, is there any BIOS that can be flashed to unlock a lower speed?

Re:EVGA SC ACX 770 & EVGA Precision - Fan Curve / Control Problem 2013/08/05 15:14:16 (permalink)
Short answer yes but dont bother.

I tried the gigabyte 770 bios which gives 17%,  i found that evga 41% is around 1300rpm and gb bios at 17% is 1200rpm on the acs sc,
idle temps remain the same.

So yes theres is more adjustment avail but very little, so much so that if i could have heard the difference before I wouldnt have gone to the trouble of trying the gb bios.

Ive got a gigabyte 770 in the house now as well and while it is marginly quiter at idle and the fans drop down MUCH lower there are 3 of them so theres v little in it.

Bumping an old thread because this is STILL a problem. I dropped a lot of money on this card and am disappointed with ACX cooler, basically just a gimmick because it runs even louder then my old r9 280 at 40% which I just upgraded from. Release a bios, i'd rather take my chances with the fans ball bearing then sit and listen to this hairdryer go 40% in the background...

Maybe i am missing something even when i put my 770 to 100% fan speed yeah i hear it and its loud but once i put my headphones on i don't hear anything tbh even with them off its not that bad 40% i don't hear anything unless your going for 100% silent? idk what kind of noise goals your going for but at 40% i really don't hear it no where close to a hairdryer.

Like i said tho maybe i am missing something from this thread.

Maybe you need a check up with an otolaryngologist buddy. I've spent a lot of cash sound deadening my case and I can clearly hear the fan whilst working or browsing the web. Maybe it's not loud to othesr because you have equally loud(er) case fans.

EDIT*
BTW This thing idles at 1300 rpm! my case fans idle at around 780 rpm...Kind of a joke EVGA. This is enthusiast grade hardware right?

Yeah i have case fans that stay at 1600-1800rpm at all times and i hear them but i turned those off when i checked for the 770 at 40% you really don't hear anything. at 100% yeah like i said its loud.
i also use over the ear headphones G35 i don't hear anything with those on mainly when something is on  game, movie, youtube.

long story short i feel bad for the people with loud fan noise coming from there 770 nothing i complain about. just my opinion.
