Why did Nvidia FE engineers push toward this new connector? What is the advantage?
It’s compact compared to two 8 pins, because of the V shaped PCB.

So i just received my 12 pin connector to replace the ridiculous mess of stock dual 8 pin connector harnesses along with the adapter that came with my 3080 FE. I went to plug it into the PSU and couldn't get it. Upon closer inspection I noticed these differences. Below is a pic of the the 12 pin cable compared to the factory harness plugs on the PSU side of each (posted an unedited side by side since my drawings may have obscured the image. Can someone at EVGA tell me why these are different? This cable is unusable for me currently.

The cable is only compatible with certain PSU's from EVGA. What's your PSU model?

It is indeed designed for just EVGA PSUs. The modular end at the back of PSUs don't have a set standard of pin-outs so most vendors have different ones. Gamer's Nexus did a good rundown on this. TLDR don't mix cables from different PSUs. If you're into individually sleeved cables specifically and your PSU maker doesn't offer one, companies such as Cablemod will get around to offer nice looking cables/extentions in due time.

I would highly recommend to pick one of these up if you have an FE. I'd been troubleshooting an issue where my system would spontaneously reboot 1-2 times per day. The issue ended up being the Nvidia adapter.
Fortunately my PSU was from Seasonic so the cable was free though.

Just got my cable and it looks amazing but I have a concern. On the Nvidia adaptor two eight pins from psu connect to their adaptor and all 16 pins (8 per side) are present. On the EVGA adaptor there are a total of 12 pins on the PSU side, with 2 missing per side. Granted they are grounds based on pin-outs. Would this cause issues down the road? Based on pictures corsairs adaptor also only has the 12 not 16 on the PSU side of things.

I have to admit I was a bit shocked when my 1000 watt EVGA needed an adapter to run the card. Without it just gave me a black screen even though each led light was lit on all power rails. Including it on the price point my 3090 ftw3 ultra would have been nice. I emptied the box like really?

Im still not sold into this new 12 pin adapter.
Honestly, i hate how much it costs but damn does it make things look way better. I'm currently building a gaming PC for my friend's little brother and I thought I could look past the ugly adapter but I advised him to order the cable after all.

Umm... not sure what you are referring to.. the FTW3 does NOT require this adapter. Please explain what you are talking about?
