Re: EVGA Hadron Air Really loud PSU fan, even when in desktop with very little load 2014/03/13 10:22:31 (permalink)
Solved my PSU problem very easily and I'm a bit embarrassed I didn't think of it earlier...

I made a second Fan profile before starting to game with my CPU fan and top exhausts at 50% while cool 40° (+/- 1000rpm) and about 70% at 60°.
It was so simple especially since the hadron does not have intakes I forgot to get some airflow going right from the start. FanExpert didn't think of it, why would it, it doesn't know the case, that's for going automatic... *shame*

Yes, you can hear the fans now, which is to be expected in a mITX gaming rig, but after 2 hours of continuous uniengine at absolute max, the PSU stays quiet. The system's not louder than my xbox or ps3 which is ok with me.
Airflow in anticipation of load is key here, it seems
As Dedaciai says, it has a distinctive pitch, but it isn't the turbine it was when my fans only started the real airflow at about 60°.

To get it quieter now, I'd have to test with other exhaust fans.

Just ordered my Air box... now by reading this I do not wan't to open the box and just return it. If that PSU fan is very loud that beats my purpose since this rig will be on 24x7. Will see...

It's not so much that it is loud as it is the pitch that may drive you up the wall.  I ordered some acoustic foam off of amazon and it should be here next Tuesday.  I am really hoping that it will change the pitch enough to silence my PSU fan's pitch.  If it does, I'll post pics of my work.

The foam thing did not work (3/4" with the hard layer in the middle) even when it was double layered.  Oh well, I guess I will wait till someone else comes out with a nice looking, very small mITX case like this one.  I hope EVGA updates this case (make it quieter, room to hide cables, remove HDD cage, etc.) and give me a reason to upgrade, lol.  I'll just keep my headphones on in the mean time.

Was looking at the Corsair 250D as a replacement, since it's a clean design, but sadly double the width of the Hadron. I don't know if it be "quieter" per se, but it will run a little cooler and you'd have the choice for the PSU.
The Hadron really is the best looking mITX (BitFenix Prodigy is also good looking, like a mini mac pro, but its size is more on the mATX side)

Can't take it, 24 hours is long enough with this little jet engine.  Very disappointing as I love the case otherwise.

I wonder if you open the psu, get ride of the 40mm and either let it open air or make vents on the top and let the exaust fan from the top do the job.
I think the 40mm do something like 18CFM at max so the two top fan do more than that.

just got my build up and running today. Was kind of worried about the psu noise but after installing the OS I am satisfied atm with the psu. The stock case fans are much more audible than the PSU

I had a whine on my Hadron Air when I got it. It would start up, be quiet for a bit then I had some fan noise and ticking.

EVGA rma'd it immediately and I got a new one within a week of shipping my defective one out.

You have to keep in mind that the case is very compact and that heat is an issue.

I have a reference GTX 780 card and have modified the fan profile to pump out more heat faster, I also changed the case fans and put dual PMW Noctua's in and adjusted the profile on those as well to increase flow the higher the load on the system.

My system runs good, and is quiet, I can only here the fan on my Thermalright AXP-200R when it's at idle.

It's a good case, just give EVGA a chance to make it better.

So I finally got my build up and running and used my 670 from an old dell. The system is very loud. After I adjusted the cpu fan and case fans it is now tolerable, but yes! now I can hear the psu. The high pitch of that thing is driving me crazy... Instead of putting it on my desk I installed it under my desk lol. Now I understand why this thing is noisy.

How long has it taken for everyone's PSU to go crazy mode? I've been using mine for 2ish weeks now and still quiet, my GPU is a bit loud but that's because for some reason stock settings was 100% fan, stupid AMD GPU, should of went nvidia, but ran out of resources with this case.

So, mister evga (or an owner); will the noctua 40mm fan fit in the psu?
Someone spend 14 bucks and try it!
I want to buy this case, but not if it is making horrible noise! Does evga actually test stuff before manufacturing and shipping? Sheesh!

Re: EVGA Hadron Air Really loud PSU fan, even when in desktop with very little load 2014/04/07 13:27:29 (permalink)
You can't replace it by the noctua, the noctua is 40x10 4500rpm and produce less then 5cfm the one from the psu is 40x28 10000rpm and does 18cfm.

The best thing is to use the top fan to extract the maximum air. So on a demanding game like planetside 2 you need them at 100% but something like elder scroll online, you need them at 75%. I do that with a MSI 770 TF and my psu stay quiet if the case get too hot the psu will get too warm and since the fan is small you don't want that.

Second advise get a blower type card, i wanted the EVGA 770 blower but it would have cost me 60€ buck more for the same card. Wish I lived in the US.

I must be incredibly lucky, because I rarely hear my PSU fan, I know it runs too because I can feel it, and I definitely hear it initially when it starts.  Other than that though, pretty quiet.

Thanks for the info. Blowers cost less than acx in euro evga website...where are you?

Wonder if evga will sell me a case without psu. Lemme mod mine with the silverstone. Sucks they make a great rig with a noisy and nonstandard psu.

I'm having the same issue, I'm going to work on adjusting fan profiles and look into buying a noctua fan replacement. No point in trying the RMA lottery according to what everyone has been saying... :)

I didn't have much luck getting an unscratched window from them either. Probably my last non-video card purchase from EVGA :/ (Might look at another Corsair, maybe the 250D)

Love their graphics cards doe.

I've blocked for a second my psu fan with a stick.. and my system gets completely silent.
I'm using 780 ti reference and evga mitx acx cooler...

there is definably some flaw in psu cooling design.

Guys, i could solve almost totally the problem of my PSU noise.
I found that the noise was the psu fan, so I turned the case upside down leaving the back facing up, unscrewed the metal cover that sits on the back of the case (exhaust PSU fan) and removed part of the round seal to access spindle lock the propeller, and applied a little of the product WD40 (spray lubricant) leaving it work for a few minutes.
Put the seal back, screwed back the metal cover, returned the case to the normal position, power on... and bingo! Noise decreased by almost 80% :thumb:

As you can see in both videos:

PSU fan Noise:

And almost none PSU fan noise

Sounds like a lubricant issue for sure, good job Victor! Cant wait to join the ranks of the Hadron owners and support EVGA once again. Im also making the jump from from ATX to mITX, and from i7 to i5. Seems the more builds you do, the cheaper they get as you figure out what you need and dont need (or use). Glad it fits EVGAs top of the line VGAs as I wont get chincy in that department. The wife has always hated my cases so this was the perfect case for our needs.

Thanks.
This was my first build, so I still have much to learn.
I build it first because i needed a good rig, and second because i take it as a hobby, I love hardware

No excessive fan noise with mine, yet, it will spin up a little when things start warming up but nothing like the initial boot.

Re: EVGA Hadron Air Really loud PSU fan, even when in desktop with very little load 2014/06/30 09:40:17 (permalink)
Same problem here. I replaced the two top fans with noctua ones and have them blowing in because I use my case on its side. Gonna try the "oil-trick" and possibly change the noctuas to blow out and see what happens. Don't want to rma my case because then I'd be without a computer until the new one arrives :(

I'm about to open a support ticket for my Hydro PSU.  I don't think the fan is spinning too fast (it's nothing like the boot up sequence) but the noise at idle is quite annoying.  I'm not yet sure if it's just the tone or the volume/speed as well, perhaps it idles slightly too fast.  It's louder/more annoying than the gfx, cpu and system fans combined.

I also have an Air with near identical components inside, and it's PSU is very very quiet (on desktop).  When it's under the desk you can hardly tell that it's on.
