In 4K at 144 frames I'm getting shot to 82/83ºc within seconds of joining a Call of Duty game lobby. Warzone's gotten me to 86+
Idling I'm at about 60ºc.

I tried another threads suggestion of restoring Nvidia's 3D settings. Didn't work on fixing temps for me.

All of these #s are with the case open. I'm using a Tower 900 case by Thermaltake and one of the glass panels is off of it at the moment.

I'm not OC'ing.. I'm using baseline PX1 settings.. Even with all three fans up to 80% I just recorded an 86º max temp, starting from 60º within 5 minutes of playing Cold War.

3800x AMD
3200mhz corsair
x470 asus rog strix f

I don't even think I have it set to OC bios.

I know you have the side panel off, but do you have a dead spot under the gpu fans?, it's so easy to set your fans to blow front to top that the lower side can get a bit vacant, especially as these cards are that extra bit thicker.
Stick a exterior fan blowing towards the lower part of your case and monitor temps, if no real improvement then I'd try redoing the TIM, as that would double up checking the cooler is attached properly, failing that perhaps RMA

the OC bios only makes the fan curve more aggressive...so that wouldn't cause it...sounds like there's some thermal paste application issues to me

or the heatsink isn't tightly screwed down..

problem I see if you try to reapply paste is that the pads they use on the memory and VRM just fall apart when taking the card apart (they did on me, anyway)....You could try tightening the four screws a bit on the back if you are competent with PC stuff...don't overtighten tho.

otherwise I'd call eVGA support and talk to them....this sounds like heatsink issues to me, not a real RMA...

If it's not a ramp up in temperature over 10+ seconds, but rather an instantaneous spike (less than 1 second) from 60 to 80+, you have bad cold plate contact with the GPU die. This is assuming that your GPU fans are spinning.

If you aren't comfortable replacing the GPU's TIM, then it's best to start an RMA.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I tried tightening the screws on the back of the plate and they were already torqued down hard, so they didn't really twist any.

My case set up currently looks like this, with the intake fans along the back wall bout 3" away from it, and exhaust fans on the other side (front facing on pic under back half panel). Its got 4 fans each side, 2 back panel fans, and one fan exhausting out the top by the card, and another exhausting out the bottom underneath the card (I just flipped it to this to check if it made a difference and it doesn't)

I ordered the EVGA FTW3 edition "hybrid" card liquid cooling AIO thing so I'm gonna eventually just mount the radiator on the back wall side of the case, but if that's the problem and it's not getting enough airflow then I'd like to figure it out before I install it and have to take it down twice... additionally I'll be able to check out the thermals once I'm in there, and redo them with the new thermal strips and such... Kind of a shame that I'm doing it out of necessity though, as the base card is so damn RGB beautified.

I feel your pain dude. Same case 83 with all the glass off, 85 with glass on. Only difference is my bottom fan is blowing cool air up at the card.

Going to try later this week with a box fan literally blasting the card. I literally laughed out loud when Jacob says 3090 ftw3 should be low 70s on stock fan curve. It's also not like my card isn't evacuating heat well. Oh no it blows nice hot air out it's sides.

Is it a faulty card or is that just how they are? :X

I had a similar problem with my card and I can testify where the cooling air comes from is very important.  Even with the side off, the warm air blowing toward the side of the case, can go back under the card and get into the cooling fans.  I ended up putting all of my cooling fans to an outflow and opened up an area below the card in the back for ambient air to enter.  It has been fine ever since..

I had the exact same issue. Got the hybrid kit and averaging 55 to 60 deg temps now. Prior to getting the kit I tried reseating the cooler and also applying kryo paste. Did not help.

Yeah, I have a massive...like way over sized radiator just waiting to keep this thing cool like none other. But the FTW3 blocks aren't out from my favorite companies yet. EK and Watercool.de both show January as release date.

I stepped away from watercooling a few years ago because the cards and cpus at the time honestly didn't need it unless you were overclocking which I really quit doing. This 3090 has pushed me back into it.

I'll wait till watercool.de has the heatkiller block ready for my FTW3, slap it on there and it should be cool as ice. Plus as a bonus my nvme drives wont run as hot since they wont have a card blasting them with hot air.

I feel like $140 for a AIO watercooled hybrid thing is fine for me because traditional watercooling costs an arm and a leg, and we already spent that on our cards XD

I got and installed the Hybrid kit and my temps went down to 53.. lol :) also rearranged my airflow... for anyone with a Tower 900 Case -- Exhaust at the top, intake on the sides, radiator on both sides, and exhaust on the 2 optional fans on the back panel.
