Since I can't use Westmere CPUs (I don't wanna mod my board), I was looking at some alternatives from the legacy support website
https://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/legacy/
, but this CPU isn't listed there, and tech support said they can't always test all combinations for compatibility, so I might be better off asking at the forums. So does anyone know if these are compatible?

not much difference between the two, both need the mod to work  http://ark.intel.com/compare/52586,47917

you may not need it with a rev2 board.

here is the comparision of the 980x, 990x w3680 and w3690. besides name and speed boost for the "90 chips not much difference at all.
http://ark.intel.com/compare/52585,47932,52586,47917 all 4 are unlocked 6/12 core

I'm so confused atm, what does the Rev 2 board has that other Revs don't? I was thinking on getting the w3690 if it didn't need the mod, they are cheap on ebay.

not sure, i picked up my w3680 a few months back for $80 shipped. well worth the work even if you have to mod your board (which is real easy to do)

I have heard that rev2 will work with a xeon, but I can't can't say for sure.
I had a file that had all the EVGA boards that worked, and yes some were ver2.  even 1.2 some were. Txt file, I am still looking for it.
But why not try, for 25 bucks. If it works overclock it to 4ghz or better

Don't want to risk 25$  try this one for 3.99 ( breaks my heart, I bought two of these for 385$ each years ago)
It is an e5620 qyad core xeon, if it works then so will the x56xx or the L56xx and w36xx xeons
