Hello friends

I recently installed a 3090 FTW3 Ultra, and everything works great except for audio.

My PC is connected directly to a LG C9 OLED for 4k 120hz operation (which works great).  However, I run a second HDMI cable from the GPU to my AVR for audio.  Because the GPU only has one HDMI, I'm forced to use an adapter from DP to HDMI.  While multi channel PCM works, I'm limited in windows control panel to 48khz/16bit resolution for some reason.  I've tried a few different adapters with the same results.

I'm assuming DP output on the GPU can output 192khz/24bit resolution (???), but that the adapters are causing me problems.  Searching for adapters they all kind of seem the same, and the technical data listed for them is hit or miss.  Has anyone else run into this?  Any suggestions or info would be appreciated.

Thanks all

Can you not run HDMI to the diplay and then an audio out HDMI from your display to whereever you want it to go?  Many displays support this setup.

My understanding is that would require eARC functionality which my AVR only has ARC.  While I certainly get audio using that method, it is very limited in bandwith.  Using that method windows see's my LG as being capable of 192/24, but do to the limitations of ARC, it can only output 48/16 to my AVR.

My last GPU had multiple HDMI outputs so I just used one of those before.  I didn't think using an adapter from a DP 1.4 would be problematic, but it appears to be.  I'm assuming I'm just missing something here...need a specific cable/adapter, or the GPU doesn't output above 48/16 from DP connections.

My 3090 FTW3 Ultra on Nvidia drivers 457.30 can do 24 bit 192KHz just fine in 5.1 surround.

I've got essentially the same setup with a CX and passive DP to HDMI for my older, non-2.1 AVR. Make sure your dummy display is set to 1920x1080. If I remember correctly, when I first tested it out anything under 720P and things stopped being available / working.

I had exactly the same setup. You should look up the Thenaudio SHARC : it's a little device that converts the EARC signal from an EARC compatible TV to a simple HDMI output. Just plug that into one of your non-earc AVR inputs, and you're golden: full HD audio passthrough. I've used it for months, it works perfectly, and it saved me quite a lot of money (no need to buy a new AVR just for EARC or HDMI 2.1 support).

CASE : Fractal Design Define S2 / PSU : Corsair AX-850W / CPU : AMD Ryzen 3900X / MB : Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite / RAM : GSKILL DDR4 32GB Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16-19-19-39 1.35V / GPU : EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING / SSD : Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 250Go / SSD : Western Digital Black SN750 1To / SSD : Samsung 860 EVO 500Go / KB : Logitech G915 / MOUSE : Logitech Pro Wireless / MONITOR : LG 27GL850-B / MONITOR : LG OLED55C9PLA

How does the SHARC get the 4K 60Hz AVR to pass a 4K 120Hz signal? Or is it the other way around, the TV passes the audio to the SHARC which then passes it to the AVR?

Yeah I noticed in the past if the display res on the dummy display isn't something standard like 1080p or 4k, it wouldn't output audio correctly.  I tried playing with that this time as well thinking maybe it was a bandwidth thing or something, but no change.  Below is what I see for supported on my control panel (missing a lot of options).  If I run straight to AVR using HDMI, it supports up to 24/192.  Could you please verify with your setup that 192/24 is an option in control panel?

The only new variables to what my setup was before is the GPU and the DP/HDMI adapter...I'm not very familiar with DP audio output at all though so not sure if there is something I'm missing.

That Thenaudio Sharc is really interesting, thank you for the link...Kind of wish it wasn't $150, but it's an option

It doesn't: just plug the SHARC in the EARC HDMI port on the TV, and it will transfer the sound to the AVR. No video signal is managed by the SHARC. The PC will be plugged in into one the HDMI input of the TV, as usual, and the SHARC will take care of the sound. Downside: you lose an input on the TV. Upside, you potentially save a lot of money.

Well, we're talking about GPUs, TVs, AVRs that cost thousands of dollars / euros. 150$ in this case is not that much to complete a setup :)

You are correct, 150 is peanuts in the grand scheme of things considering what the GPU alone cost.  Cable Matters and 3D Club have a few options that note 192khz audio specifically, they are active adapters, and sub $30.  I'll try some of those options and work my way up.

When I find something that works I'll post it here for future users, including the option you mentioned.

This one is what I am using right now, and it works fine. Edit: 3090 FTW3 HDMI 2.1 port to TV, DP to HDMI converter to AVR. Running 5.1 surround at 24bit 192KHz right now. Dummy display for the DP to HDMI converter is running at 1080P.

Thanks for the link, I ordered it...funny thing is that is the same brand and a cheaper version of what I'm using now...we'll see what happens :)

I ran into issues using certain cables before.
