hello guys, just wanted some input from you Dell U3011 owner's.I'm on my second monitor since I purchased it on 1/30/12. The first monitor had bad back light bleed from the top right edge which was really distracting especially during dark scenes in games and movies. My replacement monitor also has bleeding but not as much, but bleeds none the less! I'm in a dilemma here, I really like the monitor because of its features and amazing picture quality in games but I'm really disappointed in the back light bleed! Its actually my first lcd monitor with back light bleed in about 8 years(including TN panels). Considering how expensive the U3011 is its really annoying.

Should I return for a refund or try for a third monitor and see if I get lucky? I really wanna keep this monitor but if the back light bleeding is normal then I might get a refund.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

thank you! any feedback will be greatly appreciated!
Here is the best picture my iphone 4s captured. sorry for the crappy quality (second monitor)

For what they're asking for those, you'd think they'd at least work right. I'd return it...(But then I'm still using CRT's)...My experiences with Dell have been rather unsatisfactory. Quality is lacking, IMO, at least with the products I've owned. Out of 3 computers, only 1 still works. The others died shortly after warrantee ran out.
So maybe third time's a charm...

Thanks for the reply hotrodPolk. You are definitely right on the dells QC. The U3011 is actually my first dell product and my first impression of dell's products is not a good one!

I think I'm leaning towards returning it for a third. if the third has back light bleed then bye bye 30" monitor:(

    Anybody else have any input?

In my case, other's similar as well, all it would take is a better quality psu and mobo to fix the issues. Don't know who their source is for monitors, but evidently they're in the same vein, as far as component quality.

Totally unacceptable if you paid the full price for those beasts. Demand to Dell that they make it right for you!

    hey evfan

sorry to hear about your U3011 experiencing that...but let me just tell you something right quick...i've owned three U3011's...and "used" about 7 different total...all of them had some sort of backlight glow...some were severe...and some were minor, but ALL OF THEM had it...I asked this question on the forum, and everybody agrees...its just how the monitor is...and its more "apparent" I guess because the monitor is so large at 30 inches...so stuff becomes more noticeable

if you're willing to play the monitor swapping game...i'd say keep swapping until you find one thats pretty chill...like i said earlier, i've been through quite a bit of U3011's, until I got one I was satisfied with...but if you want IPS glow to go away, you're out of luck :(

@Direraptor22 thanks for the advice! I will do just that.

@dukenuke88 thanks for the info! I'm aware of the glow being normal it's one of the cons of ips panels. So you're saying that the backlight bleed is normal? How bad is the backlight bleed on you're current monitors? Also, did you notice you're menu button flashing randomly? Both of my monitors did this.

well, all of the U3011's i've experienced has an IPS GLOW (just like your picture) except its on the lower right corner....I guess yours is on the lower left corner

as for BLEED...well if I looked VERY closely on all 4 corners, I have some sort of bleed or glow...whatever you want to call it...I mean in all honesty, it didn't bother me as much...since I read all the reviews ahead of time...and people were saying its normal

if you're doing alot of gaming, it shouldn't be a problem...I know i do mostly gaming and I can't tell any glow or bleed...because rarely do games go all black background...but i know if you're a big movie watcher, there can be quite a few scenes with all black or dark backgrounds

if it really bothers you, I would say try another one....but expect some sort of white light on any corner on the replacement you get...it will never be perfect...its just the nature of the 30 inch :(

If I were to take a picture of my U2711 it would look EXACTLY like your pic above evfan... and I am on my third one.  Chances are good you will end up with the same issues if you RMA the one you have

2 things.. I dont think its light bleed which would be a leak from the edge of the bezel to the front of the panel.. Its because the sheer size of a 30" display and your proximity to it your actually seeing the sides at a glancing angle.. similarly, the further away you get the less obvious it is yea? Plus if there is even the slightest flex at the edges of the panel from the pressure of the bezel it becomes more apparent because it exaggerates the angle.. quality control is not so good with these displays.

And yea sometimes I can touch the top or even the other side if the monitor and the button panel lights up

    oh yeah forgot to mention

no i don't have the menu button blink randomly...its only if my hand is about 3 inches or so from the button itself (proximity sensor)

Have to agree with Lollygag on the quality control part.  As for the bleed, I don't notice anything different when playing a game, watching movies, or just writing stuff up.  When I turn mine on, it only shows the upper left side not litting up so brightly.

My monitor is technically my 2nd one.  My first was damage during delivery.  GG UPS!  The product is somewhat fragile when it's being shipped to Hawaii.  So Dell sent me a new one with no hassels.  The glass inside was cracked, and you could see it when you turned the monitor on.  It was a massive hair-line crack in the shape of an x.  My 2nd monitor came in without any issues, problems, or blemishes.

I know exactly what the glow is. the glow is a trait that ips panels have and you are right about moving further from the monitor, the glow goes away from the bottom corners. that doesn't really bother me because its normal for a monitor of this size. but the top is backlight bleed which light from the backlight showing through a gap between the panel and the glass.
also my panel it self is loose from the area where it bleeds! there is actually some play(movement) between the panel and the bezel!

Then of course send it back.. but for the price these displays rock. The only way to buy them I think though is on sale as cheap as possible and then add the extended total care warranty.  ...in case you get pissed and punch one

Called Dell today, and after wasting my time for an hour of useless "tech support" Dell is sending a brand new replacement for my second U3011 monitor. The tech I spoke to said that he promises me that my new monitor will be 100% fine. well I hope he's right!

guys, please check this review out of the U3011. If you scroll down they have a picture of a black screen where they checked for backlight bleed but they found NONE! I expect the same quality.

Yea Dells support is pretty good.. if you bitch enoughI had a  wfp3007.. the original 30" with the complete care warranty and I cracked the front glass. 3007's were long gone so they sent me a wfp3008 which was the worst 30" ever produced so I pestered them until they sent me a U3011
