I ordered one of these to go in the top of the Cooler Master H500 case that's on the way. I hooked it up to see how much air it would blow and accidentally got my finger in the unguarded fan. Did it cut my finger? Nope. It broke. Designed that way as a safety measure? I'm kinda doubting it. Heck, on my other case fans, I've stuck a pencil in them to narrow down a suspected noisy fan and they didn't break. Pretty fragile if you ask me. I would rather have had it cut my finger. It would have healed, but the fan is garbage now. Edit: I ordered a Thermaltake Pure 20 series 200mm AND a wire fan grill. It's going to be a bit louder than the CM, but it pushes about 35cfm more. Since I broke the CM, I doubt that the Egg will do an RMA, but I may be surprised.

I looked at noctua, but their 200 only pushes 86cfm. I thought it must have been a typo at newegg, so I went to noctua's site and confirmed it. For comparison, CM pushes 110, and TT does 146 129.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing a few weeks ago with a really good corsair fan. It was a 140mm fan off their H115i, things move a lot of air over a radiator. I was really bummed out, those are not cheap fans.

Newegg actually sent me a new fan and didn't want the old one back. That was a pleasant surprise. I'm going to have an extra fan now, I ordered the Tt from amazon.

Stop going off of manufacturer specs for CFM and pressure. There is NO industry standard for testing methodology, so the numbers mean absolutely nothing and every manufacturer uses best case scenario values. Your best bet is to consult third party reviewers that test fans under the same conditions. After years and years of building PCs I have learned that fans are fans. You got pressure oriented for putting in front of rads and air filters, and airflow oriented which offer almost zero benefits in today's case designs with tempered glass and small air-holes everywhere. Choose one that has a good warranty and backed by a company with good customer service. The positioning of your fan and case design are much more impactful nowadays than numbers on a spec sheet.

I actually came back to this thread to correct something. The Tt claims 129, not 146. I don't know where I got that number. It's also a good bit louder than the CC. The Tt is turning 800rpm and the CC is 700. If Noctua's number can't be trusted and is based off ideal conditions, then I really don't want that 86. GN actually had a review from last year pitting a Noctua 200 vs a CM 200. In an actual mesh case, the fans performed almost equally with only a 2-3c difference. The Noctua edged the CM out in that test. He said that in practical use, the only real difference was aesthetics.

I don't know where Noctua gets their numbers from. I was speaking a bit generally. Most companies would want to put the best case scenario specs. It's the same concept of every laptop maker claiming 8 or 10 or X hours of battery life when in real usage you get 4 hours. To get the actual 8 hours you gotta run lowest brightness and stare at a still image. Does that mean we can't trust the laptop manufacturer? Not necessarily, but it means we need to look at things with a little bit of realism. Noctua could be using averages for all we know. Hence my point of there not being any real industry standard on these values. The only real usage of these numbers is for comparing fans of the same brand as you can usually assume that the company keeps their own testing methodology consistent. You however, cannot use the numbers to compare between brands as one may be using an entirely different way of testing than the other.

I had a coolermaster 200m break in the same manner except I didn't stick my finger in it, it just fell off one day while in use. 200m fans are terrible.

Yea, I read about fans falling apart like that. I forget the maker, but they did some kind of revision to correct the problem. I saw a some complaints on the egg about Bitfenix fans doing that.

Yup, was totally my fault. Can't hurt to ask, right? Incidentally, the rest of the blades were equally as brittle. I hear it's a common problem with the long blades on the big fans.

Usually its the plastic used in the mold process or the injection process itself - poor choice or resin or too much regrind in the plastic - the molding process - "Cold Shots" have all kinds of issues including brittle product. Plastic Mfg list the ideal temps for a reason But hey Molders are usually paid for piece work, so anything to get more parts out the door

How about if you install 4 x 120mm or 140mm, better CFM?
