Hi Everyone,
After going through a lot of threads over at the Mod Rigs, Some Amazing work in there , congrats to you all.

I have found a very nice case that will suit my needs very well. It has the option of steel, which is cheaper by about $100 over Aluminium. Both weigh the same.

Is there really an advantage to either??
Aluminium dissipates heat better...

Would appreciate your comments..

Cheers
Steve

The only advantage I see with aluminum is thicker material due to the density, and with steel, you can use magnetic lighting.

Steel will be thinner, possibly being more flimsy and aluminum won't let magnets stick.

It is my experience with case builds that it isn't the material that matters. If you are air cooling the more space you have in the chassis the better it will be. If you are water cooling then case space is not as urgent but a larger chassis does make it a bit easier to get your hands in the chassis to route the watercooling lines. Just my personal opinion.

Hmmm S-T, I did not even think about lighting and magnetic, but great point.

rj, I am toying with the idea of full blown water cooling atm, I am currently using AIO coolers for CPU and hybrid and air for GPU's.

    Excellent info Guy's, Cheers

Aluminum is easier to carry, because it's lighter. That's about it. Get one that looks good.        ;)

There is something elso to consider. I have 2x Cooler Master cases next to me. One is my ATCS 840 (Aluminium) and the other one an old Stacker 830 (steel). I have another case from Casetek in the other Room and its also steel. What you will notice is that steel cases are usually quieter because there are less vibrations. Aluminium cases tend to be a bit flimsy on larger surfaces like side panels. You can test that theory by putting your hands against one and suddenly all that weird humming is gone (or just run the fans at lower rpm like I do on my 840). Since steel cases are SECC, their heat transfer abilities are not that bad and unless you do passive cooling, it does not matter that much. Also steel is usually sturdier, which comes in handy if you start modding with power tools.

The steel one would be cooler because you can buy a lot of extra fans for the 100 dollar price difference .

It depends on the company. Some steel cases, especially the ones by Corsair, are very flimsy construction. My Stryker is not. I would like an InWin 909 but its price is way beyond my means.

I go either way, it really does depend on the company and case.

My steel Corsair 800D weighed nearly as much empty as my aluminum Lian Li PC-80 did with everything installed.  But my CaseLabs case is almost as heavy as a steel case due to the heavy gauge aluminum that CL uses.

I look at it from the point of view that at one point or another, like every couple of months, Im going to need to move that case to clean it.
