Hi all, I need some advise on my new bios set up, I was running Patriot DDR3 1333 7 7 7 20 , prior to getting the new Patriot DDR3 1600 for three years with no problems. Now that I have installed the DDR3 1600 , once in a while I get a BOSD . Any help would be greatly appreciated !! My new memory is, Patriot PGS34G1600ELK R 8gb total . Blackhawk, Please change the memory command clock from 1T to 2T and also, please edit your template and add the values showing next to ALL settings that are on Auto....thankx. EDIT: Are these the modules that you have? I cannot find any that have an "R" at the end of the model number.

Yes, need to know what the Auto setting set the FSB and CPU Core Voltage to, but I would make a few changes, get a few things off Auto (especially CPU Core Voltage) and set manually, see how it goes..Read this too about running 8GB memory on nForce board..There is a BIOS update (P10) but it's for Improved CPU Compatibility which you don't need worry about. OK....I looked at the correct modules. I was a little confused at first because you said in your OP, "My new memory is, Patriot PGS34G1600ELK R 8gb total"...there is no model with an R at the end. http://www.patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=5&catid=41&prodgroupid=167&id=833&type=1 EDIT: I am also questioning whether or not your PSU has enough rail amps to provide enough power to your 2x 470's. Can you provide a link to your exact PSU model so, I can see the spex for myself? Thankx. Here is the like to my power supply , http://www.thermaltakeusa...1264&ID=1502 also sry for the confusion on the memory , that's what was on the package at the end of the string, and I was debating putting that in the post or not in the beginning .I've been building computers for a long time and tweaking them , but have not had the experience with this type of ram before, so when I saw your post on memory timings, of course I had to pick your brain for the experience. Did'nt mean to cause mass confusion . TY for the settings, I will plug them in and test them out . I never turn my computer off unless I'm changing parts, so It'll certainly get a proper burn-in ! After I put these in and restarted the computer, it powers on for 15 seconds and turns off , I reset the CMOS jumper and still does it . Any advice ? No beeps, just shuts off ! I went back in to drop the ram voltage to 1.8v saved and exit, then thats when this started . Was running fine on all the other settings , but never set thermal control to on before . Anyway won't power on and stay on now . Blackhawk

☄ Helpful
I would clear CMOS using this second method ( unplug the PSU too while doing this)..Then use only 2 sticks of RAM in logical slots 2 and 3 (black slots i believe) while everything is off..Put the battery back in and plug in the PSU..Now the BIOS will be back to as it was when the board was day 1 new and it should boot ok..Upon initial boot go immediately into the BIOS and set the Date/Time, Hard Disk Boot Priority, RAM frequency/timing/voltage to mfgr specs, set [SmartFan] to [Manual] and run all fans at 100%, set Init Display First to [PCI Slot], make any other custom changes neccessary if needed/wanted..A word on voltages: What you set voltages to in the BIOS doesn't mean that's actually what they will be when you're running/under load, voltages will normally be less in reality (sometimes considerably), so you should set your voltages (CPU, RAM) a little higher (1 or 2 steps up) in BIOS..That should get you into Windows ok..Then you can work on your overclock using only 2 sticks of RAM..When it's stable, work with the other 2 sticks installed too..You are trying run 8GB of RAM and also overclock at the same time which will usually complicate things alot..Then edit your BIOS template to reflect all your current settings/values and each time you change something (keep it up to date). Some good utilities to check realtime volts/temps/more: Everest Ultimate (free) CPU-Z Real Temp (if u didn't know it already, your Tj Max = 100C)

Bob, Ty so much for your help !!!! I'm back up and running because of your kind advice !! And I did what you said , and pulled out the two additional sticks of 4gigs of ram, and set the stock timings, and voltage . I will edit my bios , and continue with these settings for stability ! The only reason I had put 8gb back in was, I was running 8gb because I thought I needed that much to game hard , as I am a big time gamer . Thanx man, Blackhawk

That is good news, way to go, Bob!! Blackhawk, no.....you do not NEED 8GB's of system RAM installed for gaming. Sounds like your board reacts just like mine does...I also cannot run 8GB's of RAM at 1600MHz which, is what I was trying to find out. However; I can, and am.....easily running 8GB's at 1800MHz so, once we know that you can get stable with 4GB's at 1600MHz.....we'll see if you can run all 8GB's at 1800MHz if, you would like to try that. I am a little concerned about your PSU. The spex show that it has 4 - 18amp rails with a combined loading of 60amps. Each 470 requires 38amps and then you've got the rest of your hardware on top of that. I would seriously consider upgrading to at least a 1000watt PSU just to make darn sure everything is receiving the proper amount of power.

Yer welcome Blackawk, thx Jeffrey..Yeah Blackhawk, as Jeffrey said "no you do not NEED 8GB's of system RAM installed for gaming"..8GB is a massive amount that most ppl won't need unless they using really intense progs like for photo/multimedia editing or always moving/copying/transferring large amounts of data/files..You can look in the Task Manager/Resource Monitor and see what's going on with yer memory usage..Read the Help file..Search the web for "How to use Task Manager in Vista" and "Vista Resource Monitor" (or similar) and what all everything means..You'll find alot of info like this..But you got 8GB so might as well listen to Jeffrey about how to get it working for ya, he would know..Yeah your PSU must be just barely squeeking by, get a better one soon.

Hey guy's Ty for your help !!! I took your advice and purchaced this power supply from Newegg, and should have it next week . Ya I've been kinda been wondering if the 750w was a little to low in power, so your observation made my mind up ! http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16817121070 Also if you think because I have the other 4gb of ram it's worth messing with , I'll try it . Not trying to be "Mr. Negativity" but, I would not have "cheaped out" like that on a PSU, man. I would have spent the extra money and got a high-quality unit with a multi-year warranty. I do hope it does a good job and lasts a long time for you though. Yes, since you did spend the money on 8GB's....it won't hurt anything to try and run it all. If you cannot then, either you'll have a spare set or you can try and sell it and get some of your money back.

I know what your saying but I did'nt decide on this one on a whim . I looked at ones that were 189.00-300.00 dollars , and not many have a 12 volt rail rating of 35,36 amps . So I thought this one should do the trick with the 35 amp rails , and SLI certification. It got a pretty good review . I already have a Coolmax 950W, and I paid 179.00 dollars for that a year ago, and thought of using that one, but even that's only rated at 25 amps on the 12 volt rails. So thought I'd take a chance . Hey, I'm trying your guys suggestions without breaking the bank.. I did'nt expect I would have such a hard time with an upgrade of memory like this , as I ran my rig with the Patriot Viper 1333 8gb for 3 years without so much as a hick up. Now I feel like all I've done is bought myself a headache , and more expense to try to make the ram work. Plus now I can't even play a game without crashing to the desktop. I know you guy are trying to help, I'm just starting to get frustrated !

I fully understand your budget concerns...I have them myself. And yes, I am just trying to help you...not to talk you into spending money recklessly. That PSU says it is SLI Ready.....it is not SLI Certified....there is a big difference. It only had 1 review.....I cannot make a purchase off of what just one person says about a product.

Let me ask you this , after reading your post about the different timing set up you did, I noticed that you had said you put your 4gb of ram in the black slots . Which I don't have mine in . And this is one of the details I should have noticed at first, which could account for some , or all of my problems . What do you think ? I also noticed, when I down clock the ram from stock FSB 1600 to 1333 , I can then play all my games now without being kicked back to the desktop .

The black slots are rated to run at a higher MHz than the grey slots are rated for....that's why with just 2 stix installed, we all run them in the black slots.....so, we can experiment with high OC'ing and not have to switch slots to do it. What timings and voltage are you running at 1333MHz successfully? Sounds like some more tweaking needs to be done to get ya stable at 1600MHz. Have you ran and passed the MemTest Program with them set at the stock 1600MHz settings? If so, then it is probably not the RAM causing the issues in Windows. If you have not even tested your RAM at all since you got them...I would ask you to read the below, linked guide I made and follow it to test your stix. There are links to the programs mentioned at the bottom of the post. http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=602447

Last nite I changed the ram to the black slots ,went back into the bios and made these changes, and now I can play my games again without getting kicked back to the desktop, and the apps. open like they used to also. Generally running great ! These are the changes I made : changed ram voltage by a half volt, from 1.8v to 1.85v ,increased the CPU voltage from 1.3v to 1.3265 , changed the CPU FSB to 1778 for 4.0ghz and went to unlinked, and lastly, changed my memory to where it's supposed to be, 1600 , and kept the stock timings at 9 9 9 24 2T . Refer to bios set up for further details. And I downloaded the memtest, and will run that when I get home from work tonite . Well, I am totally confused to what you are running at this point now....but, I'm glad it is working for ya. First you said you changed your FSB to 1778MHz but, in your template you say it is at 1600MHz. FSB (QDR), MHz: [1600] should be 1600 not 1601 Changed to1600 Actual FSB (QDR), MHz: 1600 Make sure you keep a close eye on your temps.

Your Right Jeffry , I made a mistake in the the template ,It was early in the morning before work, and I was trying to get all the info if for ya . but I ment for you to know that I had set the CPU FSB to 1778Mhz to bump up the clock cycles to 4Ghz . Sry bout that, but you understand now right ? I'm going to run this way for a while to see if it's stable . So TY for your help so far, and I hope that you'll continue to help me in the near future !! So if you look back at the template I made the change to reflect the FSB (QDR) [1778] in my last post . TY , Blackhawk

OK Blackhawk, I thank you for the clearing that up so, I know what's really going on with your settings. Each time you find settings that work well for you, it is a good idea to write them down. I personally keep several blank templates printed off so that I can keep track of changes I make in my BIOS while trying new settings. Since you seem to have found some stability for your CPU at 1778MHz unlinked from the RAM.....I am still wondering if maybe we could get your system stable, linked and synced at 1800MHz. You really do not want to be RAM bottle-necked. The 790i MoBo performs its' best when the speeds are linked and synced. If you feel like attempting that.....you should only have to mess with the CPU FSB voltage (right where it is now or maybe 1-2 settings higher) and the RAM timings and possibly up to 1.9v. I would first try 9-9-9-27, then 9-9-9-30 or 10-10-10-30.

Sounds good, Man.....ya never know what it will or won't do until you try. No, I am "not getting bored with your case".....I find it very challenging and interesting. You are most welcome for the help....I have the same goal as you do...to get your system to run at peak, stable performance. That is very kool that you are also a Driver....what do you run?
