Can I SLI GTX 980 TI with two different types?

Hey guys, First I would like to apologize if this is the wrong place to post this. I tried searching and was unable to find anything yet.
 
I Currently have a EVGA GeForce GTX 980 TI, P/N: 06G-P4-4990-KR (the generic one)

If I purchased another GTX 980 TI would i need to buy the same type or does it matter if I were to purchase a different type? What are the pros/cons?

    You can SLI any of our GTX 980 Ti's together but you typically want to get the same model so they can run at the same base clocks, otherwise, if you get one that's faster, it will downclock to match the speed of the other one.

    Hello and Welcome to the Forums
     
    Yes you can SLI with different types of the 980Ti if you'd like, however if one card is slower than the other then the faster card will be downclocked to that lower speed of the other card. Also, if you get a 980Ti classified then you will have to use a flex cable bridge due to the PCB being bigger than the normal reference cards.

    Six years ago when this thread was posted, SLI of 980 Tis would give you a boost in FPS in games particularly in 4K games which were just starting to be released.  Here is an old article https://www.techporn.ph/nvidia-gtx-980-ti-sli-performance-at-4k-uhd/.
     
    Today with the 30 series, the only cards you can SLI are the 3090s and Nvidia doesn't support it anymore.

    Little to nothing except in really old games. Newer games SLI is rarely ever supported. The money to buy another 980 ti would be better spent on a newer GPU that would more than likely surpass any gains you'd get from an SLI setup anyway.
     
    Years back, I ran multiple video cards in all my rigs, It was the new thing. It sadly just eventually faded away. There's little reason to run SLI anymore unless you are an extreme bench marker. (AMD had a version of SLI called Crossfire, also not supported any longer.)
