I, as the subject suggests, have a 680i sli mobo that I want to upgrade and I just want to make sure that the CPU I have in mind is compatable with it.

I want to install an intel core 2 quad Q8300.

I can provide more info if needed.

Thank you,
Themister.

It will not work.  The nForce 600 series motherboards did not support this CPU as it was barely able to support the Q6000 series quad cores.  The correct list is at http://www.evga.com/suppo...rce_Intel_CPU_List.pdf

    Ok, that makes sense.
How about the core 2 duo E7500?
    Might that work?

Failing that, would the pentium e6600 work, it is a dual core proc reportedly clocked at 3.06 GHz?

yes any of the wolfdale C2 dual cores will work, make sure you have the latest bios though, the only CPU's that will not work will be the Yorkfield quads, the last of the C2 line, every thing below that will work.

Ah! Thank you for your help!
Let me just make sure I am clear, the pentium e6600 will not work at all on my 680i?
However, the c2d e7500 will work provided that I have the latetst bios flashed?

Here's where Intel screwed up.  There is a Core 2 Duo E6600.  There also is a Pentium Dual Core E6600.  The Pentium Dual Core E6600 was launched a couple years after this motherboard was EOL.  Will the PDC E6600 work, I dont know.  Will The C2D E6600 work, most definitely.

Confirm which CPU you have and if you have the PDC E6600, then all I can suggest is give it a try.  Based on the spec of this motherboard is should work, but again, being that the CPU was launched so late after the motherboard was EOL, there is no way to know if the microcode to fully support that CPU is in the latest bios flash.
