What kind of switches do you prefer? I’m currently using mx browns but I want to try something new. Any recommendations?

I have the red silent switches from corsair... no annoying clicks but with the same tactile response!

I use to use reds for gaming, and blues for typing. Lately I've been happy with browns, which are not nearly as tactile as blues, but are relatively quiet, and feel fine to me. So many options, and cherry clones alone before getting into mods that I wouldn't be surprised if I like something else better.

What kind of switches would you recommend for someone about to buy their first mechanical keyboard? I've been reading up on different types, but that only helps so much if you never tried them.

It's hard to say, so much is down to personal preference. Do you want to really feel that the key has been pressed? Or do you want the quietest possible switch? Or do you want something super fast? There are loads of options, the best is just to try a few in-person if possible. Of course, if that isn't possible, tactiles (brown) are always popular, providing something of a middle ground.

On the bright side, you can always get out a soldering gun and swap the switches!

There are products like this which you can buy to see which switch you prefer :) This is from amazon, but there are other 3rd party sites that have something similar which you may like more

I prefer quiet tactile switches like Cherry MX browns and have sought them out in every keyboard for the longest time. However I just got a Hyper X Alloy Origins with their tactile Aqua switches and I think I'm a convert. These have that tactile bump I love but are also somehow smoother than Cherry MX browns. I can type on the clicky tactile switches like the MX blues or the Razer greens but they grate on my nerves after a while with all the popping. The only switch I don't like are linear switches. I really like knowing when the key actuates and registers my inputs.

How noisy do you find the Hyper X Alloy Origins? I have read good things about them, but still on the border for pulling the trigger to buy them.

I'm currently using Holy Pandas on a high profile Drop Alt, and there is a very different feel to the switches based on the keyboard you're using, but you have to be prepared to do some manual lubing to get the most out of the switches.  Halo Trues are also a good tactile switch for people who want a little less of a bump while typing..  I plan to throw some AEBoards Naevy R1.5 switches into a small keyboard I'm building, as they're pretty good tactile switches for a relatively cheap price.

I've also used the older revisions of Cherry Blues and Browns, and enjoyed those, along with the Razer Oranges.  I've not been much of a linear fan (mechanical or optical), but for some reason, I actually like the linear opticals on the Z20 more than the clicky ones, for some reason.

They are no more or less quiet than my MX brown switches in my Corsair K95 Platinum. They have the normal clackity clack if you bottom out the switches as it resonates in the keycap itself but they are very pleasant to type on. As I said they are tactile with a nice pronounced actuation bump but are also smoother than my MX browns.

I like the cherry mx browns on my Ducky Year of the Monkey keyboard personally, if I was only gaming I would probably go reds or silent reds but I do a lot of typing and reds just bottom out far to easily for me to use them full time. If it wasn't for the noise I would prefer blues to browns because the tactile bump is far better than browns which can be a bit "mushy" I am interested in the Hyperx switches but I am curious who is making them because I highly doubt they developed their own I assume they are probably made by Kailh, they tend to make every companies self branded switches.

I heard Holy Pandas are next-tier switches. I was thinking about getting them with hot-swap keyboard but the price... I just cant't. :D

wow.  I didn't know that there were that many switches.  I may get something like that when I pick out my next keyboard.   Just wondering.  Cherry switches vs membrane ... which is faster in game play? (prob a dumb question but I'm old school and new to these switches).

What kind of switches would you recommend for someone about to buy their first mechanical keyboard? I've been reading up on different types, but that only helps so much if you never tried them.

You should go to your local electronics store, and test out various keyboards. They usually have linear, and tactile switches, but you might have to research what exact switch each kb is using especially with all these cloned cherry's.  Browns are probably the safest choice all around as they are tactile light, and not as noisy as tactile blues, but linear switches like reds are considered better for gaming.

what is your view on the silver?  Are they quiet?  I prefer quiet keys as to the clacky ones. I did hear that the blues are noisy.  My son bought a keyboard that had the blues in it and it was so noisy.  He traded for the silver.  Those are not so bad but I still wonder if their are quieter ones.  (he picked silver because they are supposedly fast in game play)

If I was to go for a mechanical keyboard, I would go for Cherry MX Red, as I've heard those are very good switches for overall use.

The kailh burgundies feel nice, imo. Granted I lubed and filmed mine. Yellows are good too for a budget option.

I’m currently looking at black ink with a polycarbonate plate. Should sound pretty good.
