Hey everyone!  I have to send back my Z590 FTW cause my RGB Led's dont work, and wanted to run some benchmarks before I sent it back (just installed 2 weeks ago)  So I ran the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility benchmark and noticed that it almost instantly thermal throttles and hits 100c in just a few seconds!   Frequency never goes over 4,800MHz (on 2 cores only) with the voltage peaking at about 1.423v , and the bios is at stock settings with the only exception being I turned on "Intel Adaptive Boost Technology"  Another very odd thing I just found today is that there is a very odd noise coming from the motherboard when I run this benchmark.  Its like a fluttering sound that goes on and off every second or so during the benchmark.  It quits when the bench is done...
I have a Corsair H115i Pro AIO, and my EVGA DG86 Case has 7 fans with lots of airflow...Inside of the case is 22c currently. I also have a thin layer, evenly spread of EVGA Frostbite thermal paste across the CPU as I always do

Does anyone else have a 11900K and have similar issues using this Z590 Board?  Its been about 7 years since I upgraded so alot of this tech is new to me...Coming from a Z97 Classified and 4790K to this, its all quite different, but I never had my 4790K thermal throttle, and I had it overclocked to 4.9GHz too!

Would love to hear from anyone who has this CPU/Motherboard combo...  Thanks for your time!

It sounds like your mount is bad. The 11900k requires a boat-load of power and thus cooling if you OC it, but it sounds like you're running it stock. You could try a more aggressive fan and pump profile with your cooler too just to see if it helps, but at 4.8 it really shouldn't be that hot I wouldn't think. That's definitely not the best 280 out there, but it shouldn't be terrible. I would check the paste application. I did a few tests and found a big blob in the middle works better than a vertical line or spreading out the paste with this CPU. ymmv of course. If you have the version1 of that paste, I would suggest a different one. The v2 is much better I have read, but still probably not as good as prolimatech pk-3, kingpin kpx, thermal grizzly kryonaut, or even arctic mx-4. At least, according to the reviews I've found. I think it's pretty close to the better noctua paste though.

In a separate topic, I can confirm the weird sounds (scratchy tape?...) during that particular benchmark. I hear that too.

I honestly don’t think it’s my thermal paste or the I/O cpu mount/plate. Somethings up with this CPU. It won’t even hit over 4.8GHz during gaming, or benchmarks on any core by default. It runs cool in games (around 55-65c) obviously cause it’s not being used much but it will not turbo past 4.8GHz. I tried the “Modest OC” in the bios which runs at 5.1GHz all core, but gets really hot quick. Hits 70-80 pretty easy in games and when I ran 3D Mark Time Spy and the CPU started throttling during the CPU Test. I have seen others have this same AIO with much better results. The one thing that I want to do, but can’t is lower the CPU voltage. Every time I adjust the target voltage to override, set target temp to 1.3v and set the offset to 0, it still climbs up to around 1.42-1.46 under a load. Would like to lower it to see if that would help my temps but I must be missing something

Yea my 11700k won't turbo either. Not to mention other issues including the voltage issues like you said. I'm looking forward to using 12th gen as an excuse to dump this board.

If you run the OC Robot (which I don't expect to pass) in BIOS, what temp does it get to at 4700 or 4800? Also, at what voltage? You may want to stop it after that to protect it as I'm betting it gets too hot after that.

Just one other note to add, your 4790k OC'd probably averaged around 150W? This CPU is going to run at 250W regularly on this motherboard. There's not even an adjustment for the power states in the BIOS for this board. If there's any OC at all, I think it just unlocks the power state, which means it can try to draw 250W all the time. With my OC, there's no limit at all, which is confirmed in Intel's XTU app where it shows "unlimited" under the power limit settings. So when I was at 5.3GHz all-core, it would try to draw upwards of 333W regularly if I was running Cinebench. I'm in no way intending to be rude, but all the reviews for your AIO I've seen show it cooling about as good as most 240mm AIOs, which, if you compound that with any issues on the thermal paste selection or application, it could point to excessive heating. The other thing I've noticed from this CPU is that the temperatures jump fast. You throw a bench at it and they do not ramp up, they leap, then the cooling tries to keep up and it stabilizes. I notice that with a custom open-loop water cooled system, including a 420mm radiator with push/pull fans, and an Optimus CPU block. Your case probably has better air-flow than mine at this point (because mine is not great right now), but even still, this CPU is a monstrosity that requires serious cooling.

To demonstrate my point, some reviews show your cooler letting a 4790k at 4.6GHz at 100% load hit 70°C. That's with only 143W applied. You add another 100W to that...it's not going to be pretty. Guru3D got into the 90's°C on a 360 AIO. Tom's hit 100°C using your cooler. So depending on the test you do, you're going to hit 100°C without even overclocking this thing.

Honestly, if I were going to throw an AIO at this thing, it would be the Arctic Freezer ii 420mm or 360mm (push/pull), or at-minimum a 280 with push/pull (expecting no overclocking capabilities). They aren't pretty, but every review shows them dominating the AIO market for performance and they're fairly reasonably priced.

Thanks for the advice on the AIO. I’ll be looking at some buying a much better one, or possibly making a custom loop since my case is setup for it. As for the the OC Robot, I ran it a few times and it passed every time. The temps and frequency’s I was getting were the following: 4900MHz @ 1.3v @ 67c, 5000MHz @ 1.363v @ 73c, 5100MHz @ 1.41v @ 81c and 5200MHz @ 1.41v @ 82c. It actually finished at 5300MHz and was able to run 3D mark with it and finish, but it throttled a lot down to 5100MHz during the cpu test so I just put it back to stock again. Well, gotta box this mobo up for replacement. Thanks again for the reply!

No problem at all. Happy to try and help, even if I may be occasionally a bearer or bad news. Your OC Robot results surprise me, honestly. At the same time, they are a scaled back version of what I get, in that 5.3 and 5.4 show about the same voltage for me (1.549) and only a little warmer, even though every other step shows a clear increase in voltage and temperature. It suggests 5.4, but when I hit apply, it doesn't actually do a 5.4-all-core when I get to Windows, everything runs at 5.3. I can generally boot at 5.4, but it will crash the first time I try to run anything. Considering how many people have the OC Robot fail on them, I'm curious if the thing works right at all, or what it is checking for stability. I still have thermal issues to work out due to the top of my case being choked off that I plan to improve (maybe I'll borrow a dremel today, idk) before I try to get back to 5.3-all-core or trying 5.4.

Also, I put notes in the FTW Owners thread, but the thermal paste applications I've tried:
    1. Prolimatech PK-3 blob (3/8"-1/2" ish diameter, 1/16-1/8" tall blob) in the center
    2. Prolimatech PK-3 spread across whole IHS
    3. Kingpin KPx thin line from top to bottom of IHS (should be directly over CPU die underneath IHS)

From my rough testing, it appears option 1 was the best, followed by 3, then 2. I have no idea why. I keep thinking I want to try option 1, but with thermal grizzly kryonaut just to have another datapoint (I have some). The reason I tried 2, then 3, was because the first one seemed to have the temperatures jump fast. They didn't get scary hot, but they jumped fast, so I thought the blob was too much paste, slowing down the thermal transfer. Option 2 was considerably worse for performance, so I knew I had taken a step backwards. I then tried the KPx and found it to be better than 2, but not as good as the original. I just didn't feel like doing it again, but I may have a version 4 in my near future and depending on how that goes a v1-attempt 2 lol

I think I found the culprit on why my cpu was instantly throttling. What perplexed me is that before I removed the mobo to try and see if the RGB was in fact plugged in (per tech support) I thought I had already ran the XTU bench and had no issues. When I put it all back together I noticed it. Come to find out the cpu holding bracket on the backside of the mobo got hung up and didn’t fully seat. When I removed the cpu cooler from the cpu today, I noticed it was not fully touching the entire cpu. Was evident from the cpu paste. Was only touching roughly 3/4 of it. That would explain a lot, lol, so I think I’m good to go as soon as I get my replacement motherboard back from EVGA. I never would have guessed that because the cpu mount screws were all tight. Live and learn on this one I guess! Thanks again for all your input!! Still looking at getting a custom loop setup. I have always wanted to do that, and now I want to more then ever. Time to start researching parts again.

Glad you got that sorted out. I feel like someone asked you about your CPU mount earlier on in this thread, but oh well  (j/k. I'm just glad you got it sorted).

I just opened some more ventilation on my case last night and did an OC Robot run real quick to check on things. I'm going to post this in the OC Robot thread, but I figured I'd give you what my volts/temps were just as a reference:

I don't know how the voltage stays the same (or a hair lower) with slightly higher temp and supposedly another 100MHz jump at the end. Doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for posting your voltages! Will be nice to compare them to mine when I get my Mobo back! I noticed in had a HUGE jump in cooling when i took off the front grill of my EVGA DG-86 Case. The thin filter they have in the front is very obstructive and blocks about 70% of the air flow from my 3 intake fans. I’m thinking of removing it and finding a better alternative or leave it out altogether. And yes, it was mentioned about my mount being bad, but at the time, I guess I took it as the pump in the mount was bad, and not fully seated, lol.
