Just did a pretty involved build over the weekend, stuffing 20lbs of computer into a 10lb case. It is very tedious working on the black interior, black motherboard and black cables and even all black hardware. They eat up all the light, so just seeing it well enough to assemble everything properly meant grabbing a flashlight, even on a well-lit workbench. Even just orienting the myriad of cables is more difficult, since it means looking to find the key or clip, instead of seeing nice, colorful wiring. Good luck trying to find anything other than black everything anymore. I have to admit, I was working at Apple when they went down the road of blacking out everything inside the computer. I can't say they 'started it' but if they did, I'm sorry. For the young'uns out there, computers didn't used to be black on the inside. Wiring harnesses didn't used to be all black. Circuit boards weren't black either. Insides of cases were usually either bright metal or painted the same as the exterior, or of the same plastic. See wires were color coded, so you could find where each wire went and you could easily measure a voltage on any power plug based on it being red, yellow, orange, etc. Black was always ground on power harnesses. Circuit boards were usually solder mask green, or blue, sometimes red in a custom order. Then along came Ives and crew, who were worried about certain reviewers on the internet, who'd buy up whatever the latest Apple product, take it apart and post the pictures on the 'net. So, they demanded that engineering change all the wiring to all black along with everything else inside of all products eventually. It's a dumb trend, really. Some things should have functional coloring. I get it, that it some (maybe most) DIY's today want to make their computers blink like a disco scene, or perhaps some sort of secret karaoke parlor on some exotic backstreet in a distant land. Some of us still build these things to do specific jobs, where there just isn't one off the shelf box that already does it, or there is and it costs way too much.

Some color wouldn't be that bad inside of cases. I kind of like the DG-77 case in white but I would want to go white or red motherboard since black on white really stands out.

I personally prefer non colored/painted metal with mechanical finishes, like brushed or bead blasted. I really nice look might be a hammered finish. Also, would love to clear coat with something that rejects oils (so smokers can't slowly brown up the beautiful finish). Stainless steel, blued carbon steal, aluminum, all naked of paint. I don't mind anodizing and really can't judge someone for a beautiful paint job, but yeah, black is playing it safe. Still forgivable, have some mercy on yourself if you are going with black. The boards are black now for a reason, it is very neutral. About black boards; you can paint your PCBs. It is really easy and can be amazing looking. Just got to keep the socket cover on and tape off the other plugins. I suggest making stencils and practicing the finish on card board. See you will be holding the stencil like a cm away from the PCB when you spray it to achieve the effect. This requires technique, you shouldn't do it to the expensive thing until you know what you're doing. But it looks amazing when done right. You can also tape things off to make patterns or separate colors; it's a great look. You can make an all white board from a black board with a $4 can of spray paint. Or maybe you want to trace every copper circuit with UV reactive paint. DO IT, DO IT!

LOL, yeah, the speaker! Clear plexiglas, that's old school. I tossed out an original Cosmos 1000 last year. It lived a long life. All the plastic had turned sticky on it and it had outlived current technology. Great case though and it had several good builds in it. I'd be completely OK with a motherboard in standard solder mask color, just plain old metal inside and normal color coded wiring. At least it would be easier to see. I'd be thrilled with a metal side panel instead of a window. I do like the Corsair Air 540 case though, great cooling options and a lot of stuff fits in it.

I put small speakers on my boards. Not ever board comes with one built in and I like to hear the beeps.

I do not miss the days of mix match parts and unfinished cases. However a "retro" build would be fun to see with a clear case and green/brown PCBs. Oh don't forget the terrible wires!
