Needed upgrade for Bad Company 2 so i had to replace my c2d6600 with a quad core. Without doing much research I got the q9550 just to find out that its not officially supportr by my mobo. I remember reading that quad cores are supported but I had no idea 45nm was not on the list. Anyway google returned a couple of post  people making it work somehow so i decide to give it a go. After 3 days of non stop BSOD checking RAM replacing Vcards and playing with the bios Im running the q9550 on my 680i SLI @ 3.5GHz (can push it more) and playing BC2 where my temps stay under 50 degreese on air cooling. All I had to do is OC the CPU it just wouldn't run stock no matter what settings or voltage I gave it. Played aroud with the voltages but pretty much normal OC stuff. What a pain these three days were.

Do you mind posting the settings you are using?

I've just installed the Q9550 and this could save me 3 days of experimenting!
Think a lot of people would appreciate it.

    Thanks

I still need to play around with the voltage settings but this is what I have right now. I tried going to 3.6GHz on Auto valtage but i got a bsod so I backed down to 3.5 .

Good thing I have a laptop and can spin it round with a flat screen!!!
I've got it running now anywhere between 3.2 and 3.5 where I want it.

Just 2 things, did you have it that on shut down it automatically restarts itself up again?

Also since the moment I OC'd it, I get a high chirping sound from around the cpu, NB, RAM area, whenever it is processing.
It's not a thermal warning or anything, I'm sure of that.
I've removed the RAM to check each 1 but no luck.

Anyone else know where this comes from, as before I got the cpu OC'd and it wouldn't run windows I didn't get this?

Or am I just going to have to name this computer "the noisy cricket"?

Hmm I take it that is one of the original revisions of the 680i you have as I remember there was a bunch of people with that chirping noise when overclocking on those boards. It was the R50's I believe that were making the noise, was not supposed to hurt anything just was annoying from what I remember.

This thread along with many other reports I have seen of similar stories almost have me thinking about trying this out myself. As I have a last gen 680i (rev A2) I think my chances should be pretty good. Thanx for the post Cashh

I am in the same boat, upgraded to Q9650 without knowing the 680i doesn't support 45nm (should always hit goggle before any purchase -ugg) so going to give this a go. Computer is running more than it's crashing so I hope these tweaks will do the trick. Thanks Cashh for the heads up on the thread.
