ZachA AK-47 is > then AR-15, end of discussion. If you want to have a constructive agrument over this fact, go for it I'd be willing to have that constructive argument. But a different thread at a different time perhaps. I too have owned both... more AKs then ARs but I pull more towards the AR myself. Don't get me wrong I like them both. Some nice hardware you guys have. I hate that I had to sell my AKs off because of hard times recently. But I still have two stripped AR lowers to rebuild my collection from.

AR's are definetly easier to shoot, more accurate, and on average lighter. AK's can't be beat for reliabilty (even with lack of maintenance), stopping power, and price. FYI, Just took my converted saiga (and more) out last week, with freinds. We had a bunch of fun stuff to play with, including 3 AR's (1-308, 2x 223) and 2 AK's (7.62). I think we had to clear about 4-5 jams on the AR's, none on the AK's. Thats a full 4-5 hrs of shooting time, and probaly a couple K rounds. Both were a blast too shoot either way, imo.

Yeah the 308 was a blast. Had a m1 garande and carbine there too. Very fun. Got a friend. With the 308 and 223 saiga, but we haven't had time to fire them yet. I really like the higher calibres, I'm a big bullet guy, lol Going out again Tuesday.

Anytime. If you get an AR-15 it's hard to stop there, you will get the AK-47 after.

I prefer the AK series of rifles because of the gas-piston operation which vents carbon fowling outside of the rifle rather than directly into the bolt carrier group (BCG) like the AR's direct impingement action. I do not know much about the VZ rifles, but from the photos that OP posted, it appears to have a short-stroke gas piston. I prefer a full gas piston which is attached to the BCG rather than a short-stroke piston which basically hits the BCG and pushes it back. (EDIT, You CAN put a piston upper receiver on an AR series rifle, they do exist but are not as common)

You are right, all AK-47's are piston operated. But there are many AR -15's that are piston operated, my M-4 is piston operated and I hardly have to clean my receiver bolt and carrier. I just oil it.

either riffle would be ok for target practice, but for home defence you would be better served with a 12ga pump shotgun.
