We reviewed the AOC U28G2XU back in October 2021 and found it to be a very capable 4K/144Hz monitor at the sub-£600 price point, but the omission of HDMI 2.1 limited the overall appeal. AOC seems to have taken our feedback on board with the U28G2XU2, with the screen sharing many of the same specs as this original, but this time with two HDMI 2.1 ports.
 
Equipped with a 28-inch IPS panel with 4K resolution, 1ms G2G response time and 144Hz refresh rate, the AOC Agon U28G2XU2 promises to offer a feature set suitable for most gamers. Its brightness peaks at 400nits, allowing it to earn VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. Other panel specifications are the 1000:1 contrast ratio and 8-bit colour depth, which help the monitor cover 93% of the DCI-P3 gamut and 99% of the sRGB spectrum.
 
Like most of today's monitors, it has a built-in LowBlue mode and flicker-free technology to safeguard eye health. Moreover, it supports FreeSync Premium and features six game modes (colour presets), Dial Point (crosshair overlay), PbP and PiP modes, Game Colour (colour saturation), and Shadow Control (black enhancer). Lastly, it features a console mode, allowing you to connect  Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles to the monitor to play games at 120Hz in 4K with HDR and VRR enabled. Available video and connectivity interfaces in this monitor include two HDMI 2.1 ports, two DisplayPorts 1.4, a 3.5mm audio jack and a 4-port USB 3.2 hub. Additionally, there are two 3W speakers. The included stand allows you to tilt, pivot, swivel, and adjust the height, but you can always get better ergonomics if you mount the monitor on a decent 100×100 VESA arm.
 
The AOC Agon U28G2XU2 will be available starting this month, priced at £689.99, so you do pay a bit extra for the HDMI 2.1 connectivity versus the original U28G2XU, but that could well be worth it if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series console. 
 
I think the price is a bit high for this monitor, but you do get top specs.

    Kind of lacking with the 8-bit color depth. Nvidia 30 series cards support 10-bit color depth. What's the difference?
     
    8-bit color depth = 16 Million colors.
     
    10-bit color depth = 1 Billion colors.
     
    Good read on 8-bit vs 10-bit.

    agreed, kram.  nice looking kit but a bit lacking.  is anyone really using monitor speakers these days either?  I find it hard to believe that someone spends $700 on a display but then uses the 3w built in speakers.  sure, theyre probably from the last years parts bin

    It's a good point that 10-bit would be worth having but at that point it comes into having to have 4K, HDMI 2.1 support, Freesync Premium 144hz and 10-bit color all for a reasonable price. I feel it's important to price a monitor out with those features and seeing if it's within a budget and if not then it comes down to deciding what features you can live without. In my mind if I had a budget of $599 max I would even consider if I wanted only 1440p.
