https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-confirms-ryzen-7-5800x3d-launches-this-spring-zen4-raphael-in-2h-2022

AMD finally confirmed the name of the upcoming Ryzen CPU with 3D V-Cache. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D will offer ‘extreme gaming performance’ and it will be available in Spring 2022. What this means is that 5800X3D will likely launch in the second quarter. A bit more interesting reveal is the platform for next-gen Ryzen CPUs codenamed Raphael. AMD confirms those parts feature Zen4 5nm process technology and will require a new AM5 socket. Furthermore, we have the confirmation of the Raphael CPU design, which was first revealed by ExecutableFix more than 6 months ago. AMD also confirms this is indeed a Land Grid Array (LGA) socket, which means that Ryzen Zen4 CPUs will not carry pins but pads. AMD Raphael is now set to launch in the second half of 2022.

In my opinion AMD is lagging behind Intel on their releases.

I don't know if they are lagging.  Intel had a lot of catching up to do and they appear to be succeeding.  They are both rumored to have their HEDT CPUs announced by the end of the year.  I think will have a more matched competition between them.  For the consumer market, the only question will be can we afford it?

    New socket.
I was hoping they would make some hybrid-cross version to fit current socket, so I could try one out in my son's system.
He is using a 3600x & was looking to upgrade to a 5800x sometime soon.

AMD made AM4 last a good long time. Its time. It needs to be time for AMD to move from AM4 otherwise they would start lagging behind Intel again based on power limitations of the AM4 Platform and that is just one example.

As long as your popular enough, you can get away with anything.

Apparently I did not read good enough - the new 5800X3D  is supposed to be AM4 socket  👍..
so if pricing is good, I can upgrade his current system.

It looks like all CPU efforts from AMD is going into Zen 4 for later this year. The 5800X3D is a stop gap effort until then. Zen 4 means a new chipset/motherboard and DDR5 but that is OK.

The 5800X3D is in an awkward place, close to Zen 4 release, rumors of reduced clocks vs the vanilla 5800x and now Intel's 12th gen is competitive and they have the even better upcoming 13th gen this year. All these factors make it a hard sell.

With supply shortages, it much easier to source just a CPU to drop into an existing AM4 build vs piecing together a whole AM5 build. The logic is there for this to be a thing. The only thing that truly confuses me is why they're so specific on 5800X3D and don't do the whole Ryzen product line as a refresh to the cache to hold over till AM5. I think they're optimists to believe AM5 will roll out quickly with supply line issues.

In my case, I've been piecing parts together for an AM4 build since 2020 hit. I got a mITX ASUS X570 mobo and an EK AIO 280 watercooler. Just need to get a CPU and drop the rest of my old X99 build into a new case. My problem is 5950 or 5800X3D? I do more than game.

Well it supposed to be faster than the 5900X:

My current gamer with a 3900x will eventually be my everyday PC. I've never been so far behind upgrading. As an early adopter for new tech going on 20 years it feels weird where I'm at now, but the prices be dammed I'm not paying it. Maybe the 5800X3D, if reasonably priced and available, will help me stretch out the inevitable new system a bit longer.

I actually have high hopes for this one. The 5775c was unique with its 128mb EDRAM and it gave that CPU quite a performance boost for gaming.
