So, I need to update my SP1, and then upgrade the IE to 10?

When I went to download it, it told me it was already installed on my computer. Must have been a part of W7 automatic updates. I have IE9 installed, not IE10 as well.

Looks like an optional Windows update, which most install automagically, and is not required for IE 10. I already had both installed so I uninstalled them. If you want to run Internet Explorer 10 on your PC, here's what it takes: Processor Computer with a 1 gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. Operating system Windows 7 32-bit with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or higher Windows 7 64-bit with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or higher Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) 64-bit Memory Windows 7 32-bit—512 MB Windows 7 64-bit—512 MB Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit—512 MB Hard drive space Windows 7 32-bit—70 MB Windows 7 64-bit—120 MB Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit—200 MB Drive CD-ROM drive (if installation is done from a CD-ROM) Display Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor with 256 colors Peripherals Modem or Internet connection Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device EDIT: Windows let me select and install just IE 10. After a quick restart. Not sure what's going on but it does look like a prerequisite. Microsoft installs it automagically and I don't see a reason to avoid it. Found this if someone runs into trouble. How to obtain prerequisite updates for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 that fail to install. When you install Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7, the installer program tries to automatically install prerequisite update components. If this part of the installation fails, Internet Explorer stops the installation process. If this occurs, you must install the prerequisite software manually before you can install Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. To do this, use the links in the "More Information" section to obtain the individual update components.

If you have Windows Update and it's set for automatic updates then you probably already have this. If you have a Windows 7 server at home then you might have to push the update manually.
