My 9800 GT idles at 75c with the fans on auto in EVGA precision. Is this normal? Because it seems absurdly high for me. Everything else in my case idles around 35c, and my case is properly cooled with a good air circulation(5 fans, one next to the video card itself). I'm suspecting that 9800 GT might be the problem that causes my PC to BSOD when I convert video files due to its naturally high temperatures. Is the card supposed to run this hot?

No, that's about right for EVGA Pecision set on Auto..What is your max temp under load ?..NVIDIA says the max temp for your GPU is 105c..You "shouldn't" have any issues unless you're approaching that spec..For comparison, I downclocked my GTX, set Precision to Auto and checked my temp and fan speed while running 3DMark06..At idle I'm 64c @ 43% fan speed..My fan speed won't increase to 100% untill the GPU reaches 90c..Personally, I think that's a bit high to command the fan to 100% (waiting untill 10c within max temp)..But, I've never had issues running in Auto mode and never got over 93c..I just don't like the temp/fan speed programming and Precision should be patched or updated to increase the fan speed at much lower temps, according to me ..I always set to 100% fan when introducing my video card to a substantial load..Try running your fan on manual 100% and see if u still have issues when converting video files, if yer not getting anymore BSOD's, then yer card don't like to run the elevated temp associated with the Auto setting..You can use Real Temp or some similar program to monitor and record your max temps. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9800gt_us.html http://majorgeeks.com/Real_Temp_d6098.html

You didn't list your PC specs or PC chassis. You can reduce GPU temps somewhat by verifying that you have extraordinary airflow in your chassis.

These cards run hot, too hot for my liking. I had a medium size case and these cards, they over heated constantly with fans at 100%. I had to upgrade my case and upgraded the coolers as well, now they are at 55C under load max.

75C idle is way too high... I would think that the heatsink is not making direct contact with the GPU core and/or the thermal paste needs replacement.

I installed one of these on my XFX 9800GT with some artic silver 5 and it drop my temps by +20 degrees. I was also running at 75 degrees idle. I am now running at about 50 degrees idle.
