Hello,

I am new to this forum, so I'm sorry if this has been answered.  I looked but did not find a relevant post.

I have an EVGA 9800 GT, with the latest NVIDIA drivers and am using the newest EVGA Precision (OS is Win7, 64-bit).  My problem is that I cannot control the fan speed on the video card.  It is the loudest thing in my case, and I would like to throttle it down.  The Fan Speed is completely grayed-out, in EVGA Precision.  Is it not adjustable, on this card, or is something wrong?  Is it supposed to run at 100% all of the time?  I thought that most cards throttle the fan up/down based on temperature/load.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Next to the fan speed, see the button that says auto? Click that and the orange lights at the top and bottom of that button will turn off. It will then let you mess with the slider. Caution though, if it is already running at 100% then there is a reason for it. Keep an eye on your temps, I would worry with anything over 60c idle and over 86c in games. Remember, if you lower your fan speed, it will not adjust if it gets higher, running the risk of shutting down your GPU (and your PC with it).

Gakusei, thanks for the response.  I forgot to mention that the "Auto" button is grayed out, too.  So are the lights on the "Auto" button.  Clicking it does nothing.  See attached screen-shot.  The GPU core is running at 46'C, so it's not running hot.  It appears that it's locked in at 100%.

Your probably using the 9800GT HDMI, which has a fan with a 2 pin connector and is not adjustable.

As far as I can tell that card should have a adjustable fan speed.

Is this your card minus the -AR at the end?

I am assuming you are not in USA and thats why you have a card ending in -AB?

Just make sure that you do have the latest precision installed. Did you try any other programs to adjust fan speed?

You may have to look at the actual plug the fan has connected to the PCB as SAMCRO-FTW stated if its a 2-pin it may not be adjustable. Do you ever remember having control of the fan or it slowing down anytime? How long have you had this card?

I had recently purchased a 9800GT w/HDMI out off of B-Stock and it has a fully adjustable fan speed I can not remember if it was a 2 wire fan or not though will have to check. I had assumed it would not be but to my surprise I had full control in precision and the audible drop in noise confirmed it. So I can not say with 100% certainty that all 2-wire fans are not adjustable but I could of got a revised version with a 3 wire fan I never really looked when I installed.

You know, now that you mention it, I think that it may be "-AR" at the end, not -AB".  It was still in the case, and I read it with a flashlight, the first time.  I just looked again, and now it does look like "-AR".  I checked the link that you sent, and yes, the card appears to be the same.

I do have the latest Precision installed.  I was also unable to adjust the fan speed in RivaTuner, but I think that I may not have had all of the functionality, as it said that my drivers were not in its database (they are the newest NVIDIA drivers).

I just received the card, from me brother-in-law, who was using it in an SLI configuration until he bought better cards.  He bought it about 2 years ago, I think.  I actually have another (ATI) fan-less card, but it has this huge heatsink on the back of the card, which prevents me from putting it in PCI-e slot 1, which on this motherboard (XFX 780i) is required for non-SLI operation.  That card would work fine (and quietly) in PCI-e slot 2 or 3.  So, that's annoying.

I will check to see if the EVGA card has 2 or 3 wires for the fan, although in theory, a 2-wire fan can be adjusted; it just cannot be monitored (I believe that the 3rd wire is to determine the speed in RPM of the fan).

Were there any BIOS changes for this card?  I could not find any.  I thought that maybe a newer BIOS version might help.   Video BIOS version on this card is "07/16/08".

I may just end up connecting the fan to one of the motherboard's fan connectors and adjusting the speed from there, in the motherboard's BIOS.  I don't really play games on my computer, so it shouldn't get very hot.  Like I said earlier, it was hovering around 46'C, which is quite cool.

Have you tried to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them? I would also try a different driver, perhaps a slightly older one. Newest isn't always best.

The fan should be controlable on that model 9800gt.  I would contact customer support.  There was a evga model that had a aftermarket 2-wire fan and hdmi port that ran at 100% all the time seen here.

But you have the reference 9800gt and it should adjust.  If your brother in law registered the card, you can rma it threw him.
