I just read thru the three pages of replies regarding the "wanna run 4x2 GB on nForce board".  I'm a "Geezer" who just wants to add memory to a workstation to avoid out of memory problems using Win XP 32bit with Photoshop, Autocad, and SketchUp.  My plan is to upgrade to Win 7 Pro 64 bit and upgrade from 4GB of memory on a nForce 780i to 8GB of ram.  I researched the ram selection on Neweggs site and forum and arrived at these sticks as workable---

A red flag popped up when someone said I needed to upgrade my Bios for the OS and memory upgrade.  Many more red flags popped up after reading this forum's thread noted above since the discussions go way above my technical threshold.

I just want to upgrade a workstation so I can continue making a living.  I've contacted this forum since it represents the knowledge base for EVGA's MoBos that no other forums can offer.

My system configuration is:
  • Mo Bo:  Nvidia nForce 780i SLA 3xPCIe 16x2.0 DDR2 800 to 1200-2x1/GB Ethernet-6xSATA 3Gb-RAID 0/1/5-Firewire 1394-8CH Digital Audio

The board is designed for 8GB of memory but it is best not to strain the board with faster than 800 MHz memory.  Also consider that these boards are not only not produced any more.  This will likely make a replacement difficult if you need one.  I would save your money for some good DDR3 on a new system than add more memory to this one.

first off what bios version are you running? the latest is P10, but P08 will work with win 7 and 8gb also so you may not need to upgrade the bios at all.
Since it sounds like you are not all that interested in overclocking then running 8GB should be pretty straight forward.
while some may say upgrade to a newer platform, your board still has plenty of life left in it and with the cost of RAM it will be a pretty cheap upgrade. you will want to stay away from the budget ram though and go with some good corsair XMS stuff like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145241 and at 100$ for 8GB is not a bad price, other have 8gb kits but they are a bit more or use 2x4gb modules which may or may not work.

Thanks for the feedback.  I looked at your ram selection and understand this is the direction I should consider since you feel 2 x 4GB sticks might not work as well as 4 x 2GB sticks.

Regarding the Bios upgrade issue.  I did a couple of boots and wrote down what Bio version I am using and found information that doesn't match EVGA's version number.  Info on screen starting at the top:
        Phoenix Awards BIOS ver.6.00PG;  1984-2003
Following that is a line that states:
        (6A61IY02)  Release Number 7BIN1P03
        Nvidia Bios Version  2.053.B2

I'm not at the technical level like you're at or the majority of members on this forum.  I just want to update a realiable Xi workstation to Win 7 64 bit and have available the max ram the MoBo can support to make a living.  Your input on what BIOS I have installed and a realistic upgrade path would be appreciated.
I'm trying to get thru to EVGA tech support for some advice on the BIOS upgrade but have not been successful in that quest.

you have bios version P03 so updating would be recommended. you can find the bios herehttp://cdn.evga.com/bios/NF78_P10.iso to use this file follow these directions
    • Use CD Burning software to burn the .iso image onto a blank CD (Nero, Alochol 120%, MagicISO etc.)
    • After it has burned, insert CD and restart the machine, go into the BIOS and load defaults, save and exit.
    • Now set the CD Drive as the primary boot device, or press escape while the system is booting to select CD as the bootable device.
    • After flash remove the CD, and power off PC Completely.
    • Turn on the PC and load defaults in BIOS

one word of caution, if you have a UPS (battery backup) then use it, if you loose power during a flash then the bios chip will be toast. if your sure you wont loose power during upgrade and dont have a UPS then you can just go ahead and flash it.
Also any setting you have changed in the bios will need to be redone as updating will clear them to default.

Thanks for confirming what BIOS I have.  The instructions seem straight forward but I am not sure what you mean when you say .  .  After flash remove the CD", and power off PC completely.  What is meant by "flash"?

I do have a UPs so power loss should not be an issue.

once you boot from the CD and follow the prompts it will write (flash) the new bios file. it will then have you reboot the machine (remove the bootable CD) after you reboot go back into the bios (hit the delete key) and then choose load defaults, save and exit and then the machine will reboot again. watch the screen and you should see the bios was updated to P10 (it will be in the same place as the P03 was, why they put it such a hard to see place is beyond me) windows should then boot and you will be good to go for your upgrades.

oh one other thing, some people take "burn the .iso to a cd literally, as in they just burn the complete file to a cd, just in case you are not sure how to use a iso file, you need a burning program such as nero or roxio easy cd creator or that type of program (google iso file and you will find tons of freeware programs) you then double click the file and it should open in the burning program. You then can burn the image to CD.

Also make sure you clear (set to default) the cmos (bios) before the upgrade. you can either do it via the bios or with the "clear cmos" jumper located near the bottom of the board.
