Hi,
I feel stupid having to ask but I replacing my NB fan and was wondering the best way for it to blow. I cant figure it out. If it blows towards the cpu I feel like the heat would get blown away better by the heatsink fan but it would probably add a little heat. With the fan facing the other way it would add heat to the top gpu where there is no fan to help. what do you guys think? I tried looking in the old forums but most the links dont work.
Thanks.

u should try the new EVGA FANS which blow the air toward the back away from both CPU and GPU , if you can find one

+1, try to get a oem style rear blowing fan like the original. other wise have it blow up if you don't have a side case fan.

Anyone have a picture of this OEM style one that blows towards the back?
What board(s) was it available on?
I've never seen it.  Seems like it would need a tube or ducting of some sort to make it happen.

I believe it was used on the 790 and x58 boards, it's kind of like a GPU fan or "hamster cage" fan

Yes I believe I already have the "side" blowing fan, came on my board (790i FTW). I am trying to lower the temp down so I bought a 60X25mm to replace it. I have seen in the forums where people have done this and simply used zip ties to attach it to the heatsink. But as usual I forgot to read the text and just looked at the pictures.
I just saw this video where a guy made a duct for his 780i but I dont know if I want to be that creative, looks cool though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijihagaOFoE
I guess if I had the supplys on hand I would give it a try.

What are the temps you're seeing on SPP and MCP under load such that you felt like you should lower them? Anything below 70C is perfectly fine... What's your SPP voltage?

The stock fan works perfectly for me but I do have this slot fan which fits perfectly to the top slot and exhausts the hot air coming from the NB fan: http://www.xoxide.com/the...o-blue-slotcooler.html
Try it, it pushes a considerable amount of hot air out...

yeah those type of fan don't move allot of air unless you really get them spinning, and then there loud, that duct mod looks pretty easy to do, looks like he used nothing more than cardboard and tape, the only problem i see with that is that it would be laying on top of your GPU acting as a blanket on the back side.
since your HSF is designed a little different than the 780 the just changing fans is a little difficult, I would still try to find a more powerful oem style fan and use vented slot cover to better vent your case.

If I remember right doing a IBT it would be around 75+- MPC, never really looked that hard at the SPP but its at 1.47v. And thats after I replaced the thermal with AS5.
Well anyways I got the fan I ordered and gave it a try. I installed it blowing up, away from the GPU. Once it booted up I ran IBT 5 pass on MAX, at the time it was 2700mbs. The temps for the CPU seemed about the same as they have been but my MPC stayed at 64 the whole time. So I guess its an improvement. I never did a "real" test to compare the before and after so I am not going to say its a 10 degree difference but I will say its not above 70 anymore so thats a plus. Installing wasn't that hard either once I figured out how to route the zip ties, I even had matching green ones laying around.

    Did some more tests.
IBT 20 passes on High (2048mb) even made it without crashing Max CPU was 74 Max MPC was 66. The CPU temp is a few degrees higher then normal but it could be the new thermal compound needs time to settle or the new nb fan heating it up.
Also Played a game for a while, Serious Sam HD, MPC was at 69 in the middle of play but I am thinking thats because of the heat from the GPU.

Its good the fan is working in lowering the temps....

I had the SPP at ~1.42? whatever the next one down is.  I dont exactly remember why I raised it but Its stable...  I am running 4gbs at 1900fsb

oh just remembered. Pretty sure I raised it because I keep getting freezes in Prime blend. Think I gained a little more time but didn't do a whole lot.
