Can I use a ATI 5900 series video card with a EVGA X58 SLI motherboard? Will I run into any compatibility problems?

You most definitely can!  There have been world records set with the 5870s and the 4way Classified motherboard.  You can run ATI cards on any x58 motherboard.  The ATI cards also take advantage of the NF200 chip on the Classified 759 and 762, just as do the Nvidia cards.

If you go with the 5800/5900 series cards, I GUARANTEE it will BLOW your mind!  The performance and picture quality is A+++ and +

Ohhhh Yesss!  Nvidia is the only company that requires motherboards to be "sli certified" to run mutli-gpu configs with Nvidia cards.  With ATI, there is no such thing.  Crossfire FTW

Look at my sig...   Nuff said...

It will also overheat as hell and downclock often. Unless you want to watercool it stay away from this card, air cooled 5970 is nothing more than a poorly designed junk. This is my personal experience with 5970. 2 x 5870s is much better choice.

Check this link, also google '5970 overheating'.

I am using 3 x 5870s on my rig and have no issues other than the usual lack of games that take full advantage of SLI/Crossfire.  The drivers for the 5800 series are coming along nicely and have given me no issue with the latest Catalyst 9.12.  Now that Nvidia is no longer making most of the north or south bridges on motherboards and Intel is making them instead you can choose whichever brand with no issues.

    Specs:
    HAF-X | ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 | i7 3770K @ 4.2 |  Corsair H100
    Corsair AX1200 | 4x8gigs G.Skill Trident-X 2400 | 2 x ASUS DCUII GTX 670 | Intel 320 600gig | 3 x 27 inch monitors 2D Surround | HT Omega eClaro | Onkyo 7.1 receiver with Polk Monitor Series x 7 & 12in Sub | Denon AH-D5000s

You'd be better off getting a single 5970 or waiting for Fermi, technically.

Actually, the best bet would be to get 2 x 5850s and CF & OC them to 5870 speeds.  A 5850 with the latest 9.12 drivers with OC'ed speeds that come stock on a 5870 will give you just about equal, if not better, performance of a stock GTX295.  I'd say with further driver performance increases, a 5850 will be faster than a GTX295 is everything by January/February.

Yes, and an overclocked 5870 would be better than that even. And two 5970's would be the best.

Plenty of driver issues unfortunately. Voltage tuning doesn't work in CrossFire mode, and I always get repetitive crashes after 20 - 30 minutes of video playback. I've tried both Catalyst 9.12 and the Catalyst 9.12 Hotfix drivers but neither of them seem to work perfectly at all.

On top of that, there are many VSync and stuttering issues in CrossFire mode. I've found that DiRT 2 and Modern Warfare 2 actually run better with one card than they do with two. There are several other issues that I've noticed, but due to fatigue I can't think of them right now.

Q4 2009 in recap:  Nvidia failed to supply hardware, and ATI took its spot. Nvidia excels at driver releases and multi-GPU support, but ATI does not. It's always a win/lose scenario. Hopefully Fermi will be the answer we've all been looking for..

I always said from the beginning that it would take ATI longer to improve the drivers for the 5970 than for the 5850/5870.  Everything I see on the net via user anecdotal feedback proves that notion was correct.  I'd give the 5970 1 or 2 more driver releases to get things right.

In the end, those 5970 users will be just as content as us 5850/5870 single-GPU users are now :)

Isn't there an issue with flashing screens on 2D desktop with multi-monitor setup?

Btw, you get no temp issues in your Raven? I had really bad temps in mine with GTX260's.

    Re:5900 Series ATI Cards On A EVGA X58 SLI 2010/01/13 07:43:58 (permalink)

Can I use a ATI 5900 series video card with a EVGA X58 SLI motherboard? Will I run into any compatibility problems?

Does anyone out there running an Ati Card have the 4 way MB (762)  , a Nvidia card and some spare time ?  If so ?  Can you try and add in a Nvidia card when the ATI card is in slot 1 and see if you can boot into windows ?

I have 2 5970's and they run fine on the 4 way .  If I try to add a third card for the physx the system will not boot into windows , I have also tried with just 1 5970 ,  the full story is here http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=113564 .
