Question: Does the GTX 690 output 4k resolution with the DisplayPort and/or DVI? This past weekend I almost had a 4k connected to my PC with an EVGA GTX 690. I say almost because the Sony 55" XBR-55X900A I pre-ordered was mistakenly placed on an installer's van and installed in another customer's home on Saturday. Then, another Sony that was delivered to my home that same day had a severely cracked screen. I returned the Sony to the store on Sunday and got my money refunded. Since then, I have been looking for another 4k display which there are very few. At the top of the list the Sharp P-NK321 which has both HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. The Sony only has HDMI inputs. With the Sony, I was planning on using either the DVI to HDMI adapter included with my 690 or a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter I purchased from Monoprice depending upon which looked better. Any idea which connector would offer a better picture?

Michael, You are incorrect that our graphics cards will only support 2560x1600. brightsideofnews has a comparison of AMD 7970 vs Nvidia 680 running 4k on a EIZO . On Reduser.net, REDusers forum members have been using Nvidia & AMD cards to output UHD on Seiki SE50UY04 50" 4k monitors. One user stated "I specifically asked the Nvidia rep at NAB which of their cards support UHD. He said , paraphrased ' All recent Ge-force cards '" According another user, the specs are out dated of the some of the GPUs. They list the maximum resolution at 2560x1600 because it was "maximum resolution comerically avaible at that time." So, anyone have any idea which connect would be best for 4k in terms of picture quality and refresh rate? From what I have read HDMI 1.4a will only output up to 30Hz of refresh, but what if you were going from DVI to HDMI? Would the HDMI 1.4a input accept a higher refresh? Does the DisplayPort support 4k with a higher refresh? Anyone in EVGA tech support know the answers?
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the refresh rate a massive deal as a GTX 690 can only play games like Battlefield 3 at about 45-50 fps at that resolution anyway. Games like Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 and it'll start to bog down below 30. The GTX 690 only gets about 20-25 fps in Far Cry 3 at 4k resolution. Crysis 3 is much lower, more in the 15 fps range. Unplayable really.

Yes it works on monitors that support a single input over DVI or DisplayPort.

Yeah pretty much as I said, Far Cry 3 gets about 20-25 fps at that resolution. It's worth noting that whilst Crysis 3 is showing higher FPS in their tests, they're not running it on ultra, only at high. At ultra it has no chance. Dual cards would be a better option for a resolution like that, probably dual Titans due to their increased VRAM.

Thanks for the great link! While I plan on doing some gaming on a 4k (mostly BF3), right now it will be mostly used for photo editing. Hopefully the GPU developers will soon release technology that will make gaming on 4k as smooth as the current ones do on "2k". From everything I have read the LCD manufacturers are banking on 4k to save them from their current sales slump in hopes of preventing OLEDs from becoming mainstream and taking market share.

Maybe, I can't see it being particularly helpful though. There's only so many pixels you can notice on the average user's monitor. Only the enthusiasts game on massive screens/multiple screens. Your average user still has a ~24" single screen. Personally I think monitors will be a thing of the past. With the development of equipment like the Occulus, I think monitors will be phased out in the coming years in favour of VR headsets. The rumoured cost difference isn't as much as you'd think. It'll only get cheaper as the headsets become mainstream. 3D gaming with headsets is an exciting future.

VR headsets will only be effective for the people with 20/20 vision, balanced will between the eyes (look at the requirements for AH-64 pilots), a large % of folks do not have eyesight of that standard, and will not get the full effects

They do work for people with worse than 20/20 vision. The vast majority of people do not have 20/20 vision, and they wouldn't release a product that only worked for those that do, it would be financial suicide. They stated in an interview that the only people that will have diffculties with it will be people "that have particular lazy eyes or stigmatisms". Some people just experience mild headaches until their eyes adjust. I've used rudimentary VR headsets in the past and my eyesight is far from 20/20. On a side note, just fyi, the requirements for Apache pilots are that it must be correctable to 20/20, you don't have to actually have 20/20 vision. You only have to have perfect 20/20 vision for certain fixed wing jet aircraft. The laws/regulations are different for rotary aircraft =)
