Hello everyone,

I recently purchased my 3090 FTW3 Ultra. Rev 1.0, black lips, 2114 serial #, Corsair RM850x power supply, 3 individual power cables, No daisy chains...

I have a concern with my my power balancing across all three 8 pin connectors. 8pin#3 is lagging behind in power draw compared to 1 and 2.

Example 126, 129, 82
PCIE power draw is around 56-70 relatively.

I have tried the normal bios and the OC bios switch to compare and the results resemble much of the same. #3 still lags behind.

Normal BIOS: 94.02.42.C0.05
OC BIOS: 94.02.42.C0.02

What is the deal? Should I be concerned and/or RMA the card?

No. The card is working as intended.

It appears to be by design of those cards. Mine 1.0 included.
I even read somewhere that 3rd 8 PIN is in reality 6 PIN which was converted to 8 PIN… Only EVGA is in position to give straight answer on the topic, but they are dead silent.

If this is case, then it would be nice for them to speak up instead of letting people bash their head into the wall with unnecessary speculation.

Interestingly enough, the rev 0.1 I currently have is able to pull 150W from the 3rd 8pin (and 80W from the PCIE), while the 2 rev 1.0's I had topped out around 80W on the 3rd 8pin (with ~65W from the PCIE).  Have a new 1.0 coming in a few days.

Can you please report back the results of your new 1.0 when it arrives? Just curious if they will all be same. I will probably have to just accept that this is "normal."

Prior anyone starts claiming it is faulty product keep in mind cart itself was designed as 350W.
Now we are getting it unlocked to 450W normal and 500W OC. There was never any statement that those cards will reach 500W.
Mine usually ranges from 485W to 510W during heavy bench on OC vBIOS.

    Update: power usage 165W, 165W, 115W, 67W

My 3080 ftw3 I got from RMA is the same. 2114 serial. My old one that got the RLOD after a week had fairly balanced draw, but it had a short life. I'll add that I did reach out to support about this issue on my new card and the Service Rep told me that the third pin was responsible for powering fans and RGB but he didn't elaborate. Could only deduce (as somebody with very little knowledge on the subject) that maybe they limit the 3rd pin so there is headroom to operate the fans and rgb

Lock your fans at an RPM and turn off LEDs.  See what the draw on the 8pin is with and without stressing.  It's not just the fans/leds.  Also, the fans/LEDs come on when the card is plugged into the PCIE with no 8pins connected.

Oh i know it's not *only* for fans. But I did notice when I manually increase fan speed I only gain wattage on that connection

Maybe they limited the 8pin with the rev 1.0 cards to stabilize the voltages better.  Thinking about it, I wonder if this relates in any way to the fan controller issues that folks were having.

You do make a good point about it listing only 350W. 450W and above was never promised or garunteed after bios updates...

This is known for newer 3080's, all 3080 ti's and 3090 v1.0. All the same, they dont pull full wattage over 3rd pin, and evga is silent about it.

Say black lips versus red lips means absolutely.

A plastic shroud will never change the function of the card, and the “red lip” shrouds are no longer in production. 2114 serial number is all that matters.

As others have stated, the power balancing is normal.
