$0.41 per kWh? What? That's insane. That's 3 times the national average. Whose getting their cut? Is this a fee to get people to go green? [sarcasm]You should use the PACE program to install solar panels on your roof, and then lose your house when you are later unable to pay back the priority lein on your property tax.[/sarcasm] Move!

With the lower hash cards and the crash of bitcoin it's not really that profitable. With a card that hashes at half the rate and ethernium being worth half what it was in May you are talking about making only 25% of what a miner was just a couple months ago.

I think it also depends what you mine right, like if you are mining a crypto that goes up in value then you make even more money. But if you mine a currency that goes down or just geneally isn't very good then I bet you would struggle as well.

ahsany What if electricity is free ? i got this figure from a mining website that popped on google, I always thought investments were like 15-20k to earn some profits, with 1 3080 that 400 dollars is alot to me if i ignore the electricity cost even
i imagine someone having like a whole roof of solar panels precisely installed for mining

Crypto is extremely unstable, but could be a small side hustle if you're into that. I personally wouldn't consider it as a sustainable side-income.

I'm building my monster rig for gaming but letting it mine on the side when I'm not using it would be a nice way to recoup some of that cost. I'm already building the pc so it's not like I'm saving money by choosing not to mine with it. Any money over electricity costs it does generate is just a bonus.

ahsany Ok so guys i just searched a little bit and it says that you can earn almost 400 dollars a month if u mine on a 3080, isn't it a lot ? I mean if i pay a scalper for a 3080, I can recover the extra paid money in 2 or 3 months or am I missing something ?
Not that much with only one. If it's the version with no LHR, you can make (right now) $217 per month, and $206 with the LHR one.

Mining gets a lot of hate, but for the average consumer it is a practical way to recuperate the cost of that shiny new hardware.

It's becoming less and less profitable to mine. Last time I mined was back in 2013. However, some coins support folding (like EVGA bucks though I think that's being canceled, or Banano.cc for example) which I think is a much better initiative. It's probably not profitable at this time, but at least the energy isn't just "wasted", it's used for something really useful.

It really depend on where you live. If there are profit after the electricity cost it's not too bad to mine with your GPU. It really is only profitable when you have more GPUs. This is why you see miners mine with more than just 1 GPU, so they can get their initial investment back faster.

The best solution is to get some passive electrical generation like solar panels that are also affordable where you live. The downside is that the installation costs will still have to be recuperated before you start seeing profits. Personally, I'd focus first on making your home and energy creator before mining crypto.

Mining can make very high profits, but if you include electricity bills, you will find that basically you can’t make much money. On the contrary, if you can mine in a place where the electricity bill is very low, you can get a high profit. This is why many miners choose to mine near hydropower

I mined on an RX480 back when it was the god of mining cards. I was always under the assumption AMD cards mined better because they tended to have better performance per watt. Nvidia was usually more powerful but with less focus on efficiency.

Amen. Fold/mine for a benefit beyond speculative profit
