I keep thinking about setting a station just to mess with it for fun. I cant imagine I would be able to hit the numbers they list for profit but I think I would enjoy trying to, sort of like trying to benchmark with the pros I know i wont hit their score but its interesting to see how close I can get. If I'm luck I might even break even in cost eventually.

Depends on where you live and your electricity cost, however thats basically it, but you also have to realize that its a huge risk if you invest thousands, but with 1 its not that huge.

garbage-79 I am absolutely confident that crypto is here to stay. Even with the crazy spikes in high and low you don't loose crypto but it's only the evaluation to the USD. And don't forget, you might be used to the dollar and think it is of value but in the end it's only a piece of paper issued by the government. It was manipulated in the past, is currently under manipulation and will be further manipulated in the future for sure. Think of crypto more as digital gold. Gold has a very value for usage as well in the everyday live but it is something the government cannot clone or manipulate as they want. Crypto is here to stay.
Exactly right!

I think the biggest thing to consider is the long term. When people mined in the 1080’s they saw the huge profit potential and bought into it expecting that they would make money but then the crash happened and a lot of them didn’t see themselves even paying off what they put into the mining rig. That is probably also what is happening now. People are trying to justify buying a scalped card thinking it will pay for itself but the reality is you are guessing what the crypto market will be like in five or six months if not far longer then that.

Depends on price you can get your card, if it takes you longer than 12 moths to get back your money, seems like bad investment

The amount of electricity consumed by mining a virtual currency is absolutely insane.. we're trying to be more sustainable and responsible with resources and at the same time crypto miners are consuming more energy than New Zealand...

This is not really a good thing if the mining gpus are just high-end gpus without display output

Can you explain this a bit more for us who don't know about eth2?

Proof of work is a arms race of computing power. Proof of stake lowers the difficulty and doesn't require a GPU arms race to make money. This means that "LHR" GPUs, which are being released soon, will be pointless, because they are "LHR" gimped only for Ethereum, which soon won't require powerful GPUs anyway.

Electicity cost is something to consider... so anyways they do good amount of money, ROI is about 6 months covering electricity bills, but with solar panels they can make a better profitt

With current gas and eth prices rtx 3080 makes around 6$ a day minus electricity costs. Still profitable obviously just not as much as before the recent crash.

More strict regulation will hopefully come in with regards to tax evasion and high power usage. Government intervention could really curb it

ahsany Ok so guys i just searched a little bit and it says that you can earn almost 400 dollars a month if u mine on a 3080, isn't it a lot ? I mean if i pay a scalper for a 3080, I can recover the extra paid money in 2 or 3 months or am I missing something ?
$400 a month seems a little high. Also have to realize that the market fluctuates, be it the reward amount and how much said reward amount is worth over time. If you're talking about mining eth, the price entirely depends on the transaction fees at any given minute on any given day. For a few weeks the fees for eth were huge, and miners were reaping huge benefits, and currently the fees are low. When the EIP-1559 upgrade finally happens, eth mining will probably be a thing of the past, since mining fees will be a fraction of what they currently are. Do not buy a video card in hopes that you'll make your money back mining. As an example, if you mined eth and got paid in bitcoin, and said bitcoin was worth $400 when Bitcoin was at 60K, when it crashed to 30K, your reward is now only worth $200.

Agreed. Seems like it's more of an investment/gamble than a legitimate currency. I'm definitely a little jealous of those that made it big on crypto though. I know ETH 2.0 is going to be a killer for the mining community. For my own selfish reasons, I hope it does stop GPU mining.

The huge majority of crypto's are not supposed to be used as a means of "currency", even though it's in the name. The crypto space has other, bigger projects in mind than just being a currency. It's a vessel to streamline many complicated tasks and applications of our modern world. It's really quite fascinating when you start digging into it. Research Cardano and it's Africa project, as an example.
