Hello everyone,

It's likely this has been covered several times, so sorry in advance.

I just installed my 3080 FTW3 and the temperatures are a bit higher than what I expected to see. With stock/default EVGA Precision fan settings, the card will idle between 55-60 degrees C. I am pretty sure I am running the newest version of Precision for the 30 series, installed last night. I took the side panels off the case to see if there was a difference, and there was a slight difference, but only by a couple degrees - still idling around 57 degrees. I have the fans set now to run at about 40% and it keeps the temperature in the low 30's. With the fan curve adjusted relatively aggressive, during benchmarks and gaming the card will not go about about 62 degrees.

I should have mentioned by now that the room temperature is around 70 degrees (F).

I have no problem adjusting fan curves to keep it cool if this is a common thing to sort out, I just want to try to verify the card isn't in bad shape.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds pretty normal, since the cut off for the fans to kick on was like 60c, on default setting..

If your card is getting to 55-60c at idle, you more than likely have bad airflow in your case.

How is your case fans set up?

Mine did that too. And I have very good airflow. I just adjusted the fan curve to start @ 35c, go to 40% fan and it solved the problem. Heck, I cannot even hear the fans at this RPM. I had to take a flashlight and make sure they are running  (Four 140's and three 120's are much louder than the three GPU fans).

Please keep in mind, that these GPU's are designed to run 65-85c. It is normal! We all just like to get them to run cooler. Colder the better when trying to get the best score possible for a bench run. However, the temps are good. Just figure out what your system is capable of giving you and enjoy!

Mine sits around 60-65 in games.
Idle is pretty high, I don't think the fans even come in until 50ish? So it's unlikely it's going to passively cool itself in a case below that.

I've not messed with fans or anything yet.

Thanks for the responses. I'd like to think i have good airflow, though I have an AIO for the CPU and used to have a hybrid GPU so it wasn't something I have paid much attention to. It's likely I would go with a hybrid kit for this card if/when available. I've been playing with some fan configuration in the case (Lian Li O11 Air) and I've been getting pretty much the same results whether I use four fans, nine fans, side panels on, and side panels off. Perhaps I have an issue with case fan rpm that could be addressed though. For the most part, I think I am in agreement that this is the way the default fan settings are going to perform.

Hoping they are good. Got a TUF I bought for my cousin and been using. Never goes over 60c in any amount of stress testing. Whisper quiet. Amazed. Then I see these XC3...FTW3 threads, with people hitting the 80's and I get WORRIED.

I am now on day four at 100% max usage in CPU and GPU, and these are the temps. Fans @ 40-60%...

Mine also getting toasty under load. I have setup a custom fan curve and I have a descent airflow in my case. I have maxed the temp slider and the power slider and if I push the GPU hard, I am maintaining 75-78C. My room can get a bit warm though around 75F.  Still seems pretty high temps to me. I hear Asus TUF has better cooling as well. Wanted to get a TUF, but didn't have the chance, I had a chance at getting FTW 3 and jumped on it.

Just wanted to chime in and say thank you for the original post , as I live in Florida too, and had an idle temp of 61 C.

I replaced my EVGA GTX 1080Ti Hybrid with the EVGA RTX 3080 Black Gaming GPU and went from an idle temp of 27C to 61C.

Have to say I was freaking out a bit, as my room gets kind of hot already when gaming on the 1080ti after three or four hours. However, after reading though the posts, I now have an idle 40C on the 3080.

I will continue to work on getting it lower but feel way better about the purchase now. Thank you all!!!

FYI: My EVGA power link would not fit on the 3080 but was able to cut away some plastic to slide the connects forward just a bit more to clear the 3080 heat pipes.

Hey man, hope you still check this site for notifications, it's my first time here / first build so I'd really love some advice.

I have the 3080 FTW3 Ultra and I have the same 60c idle issue that OP has... Fans turn on for a bit at 61c and turn off when it gets back to 60. I understand it's probably a default setting in the evga card but I feel as though 60c idle is too much... Where did you adjust the fan curve ? Changing the fan curve in precision doesn't seem to do anything for me.

Using Precision will only get you so far, but if you want to use it, I'd suggest setting up a curve something more like this (but with the maximum being whatever speed you can stand the noise of):

    h

And yes, my 3080 FTW3 Ultra actually idled at 25-28C, which is why I had it bottom out there.  Don't have it anymore but I ran it for over 2 months with that fan curve setting & it never hit higher than 65C on stock clocks, never passed 62C on the undervolt/OC I ran it on eventually either, even in heavy games like Cyberpunk 2077.

So you're card would idle at 25-30 degrees so you had no fan setting on for those temps but as soon as it went above you had a really aggressive fan curve in order to stop it from getting too hot.

I played warzone today and my GPU went up to 80C. I just have it on it's default stock settings. I didn't have MSI afterburner on or Precision. Do most users have either one of these applications running in the back ground at all times to ensure cooler GPU temps?

Temperatures on higher level video cards are also affected by PC case air circulation.

Switch to the OC bios and crank up the case fans a notch. With 500 DX case I have 25c idle. Your high idle temp is not a problem on its own but you will probably have very high load temps too.

I second this, the OC bios does nothing to clocks etc. but it does set a more aggressive fan profile. Hell, I use one of the most hated cases by airflow enthusiasts (NZXT H510i) and I get idle temps ~25-30c, stays ~76 under full ray tracing load @1440p.
And that's with the power limit and voltage maxed out in Afterburner. I haven't even touched the fan curve, it's bone stock as set by the OC bios.
I think many people have neglected to set their case fans for proper airflow. Get as many fans as your case allows and set your system up for neutral or positive pressure.
Those MASSIVE CPU tower coolers are system temp killers too. Even if you get a cheap 120mm AIO that doesn't give you better CPU temps, your system temps will go WAY down because the fins won't be directly in the center of your case radiating heat all around. It'll be leaps and bounds quieter as well.

I beg to differ. I have a DRP4 which has an exhaust on its back and an exhaust on top. Front intakes are 2x140mm silent wings (switched from chromax for effectiveness).

My idle is at a healthy 25c and operating temperature never exheeded 72c. Thats on a 500dx case that is one of the best for airflow.

I do agree that case fan config is VERY important. As long as you have a good exhaust and good air pulling then there will be minimal hot air recycling inside the case. Thats also because the EVGA 30xx have a great exhaust themselves. Overall, the most important thing is to make sure you exhaust hot air top and back.
