Any difference in 2017 with these newer boards going 2 dimm (16x2) vs 4 dim (8x4)? is the z370 optimized for 2 dimm setups? I just ordered the 8700k myself
* going for a higher OC as i have a 360 ice rad with a alphacool240 rad tied into the cpu

I have always heard that 2 dimms put much less stress on the IMC. With 2 dimms, you are already get dual channel, so you don’t really need four dimms if you can afford the two 16gb modules.

^This. For most 24/7 users, there won't be a terrible strain running 2 or 4 DIMMs on a CPU, especially if you only plan to run on stock settings. If you plan to overclock, sometimes even a little bit less stress makes a big difference for pushing your clocks a bit higher. It's really more a matter if you feel you'll need the 64GB of RAM afforded by the 4 DIMMS, compared to 32GB. Alternatively, it might also just be cheaper to find your favorite kit of 4x8GB rather than 2x16GB.

Right now memory prices are still going higher so 2 DIMMs are also a cheaper solution.

i suspect the shortage is due to illegal market manipulation such as restricting supply

i suspect the shortage is due to illegal market manipulation such as restricting supply The RAM I bought when ddr4 was released is significantly cheaper than when it first released, so prices are still lower than 2 years ago. https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16820231795 for $320 When I purchased my set, it was $489. So, while the prices may go up a little, I feel it isn’t as bad as people are making it sound.

historically ram has seen a price deflator of 45% over the last 30 years
look it up if you have an F- in economics

happens all the time, just now you have to mix in NVME and SSD drives getting alot more popular so that puts a bigger strain on the chip makers, plus was there not something with a factory or two in china that went off line? now back to the topic, Intel IMC have always been know to be weak when running 4 DIMMS, if you stay at stock then they will be fine, but as stated even a slight OC can make it go sideways, i always use 1 DIMM per channel, save me the headache of trying to get something stable that may never be.

I usually always instal 4 sticks of memory on my desktop rigs (unless the board has only 2 slots). Laptops usually have 2 slots.

Two has a better chance higher overclocks and gives you the option to add more RAM later if in the future you feel more RAM would be better then the fastest clocks possible.

I've never run more than 2 DIMMs. I've never personally seen the need to and I haven't gone over 16 GB total.
