I have been attaching a fan to the end of my tri-sli'd gpu's since I first got my 480's. The 3d printable bracket I modeled for the 680's doesn't work so well with 780's in an 800D, so I hadn't been using it.  The 780's are just a tad longer, and the fan would have been right up against the sata connector cover on the 800D.

After playing Farcry 3 for a few minutes on the new setup, I was surprised to see my top two cards were hitting 79 degrees, while my bottom card never got over 60. Coming from the cool 680's, this wasn't good enough, and the cards where obviously suffering from suffocation. I modeled and printed a new version that tilts up and draws in air from the empty 5.25 bays. Bottom one still stays as cool as ever, and the top two stay in the mid to high 60's.

I think this would look better in the mods rigs section so I'm moving it there

    One word: awesome! :D

//edit why on earth does it need to be moved? I never look in the mod-area, I check this thread (700-series) only. Oh well. Nevermind.

Thanks for the ribbon! I thought I'd share with the other 780 owners. I didn't even think to post in mods-rigs.

I want a 3D printer, but I'm waiting for a reasonably good resolution one to be sub $1k. Imagine all of the things that I could make and not use.

Dude that's sweet!  What does it cost to make one.  You should start making and selling these.  If the price was right I would buy one.

I'd be willing to sell them on here if there was interest. I've only tested it in my 800D, so user mileage may vary.

Looks fantastic. I would highly recommend one of these though. Been doing that shroud idea sense the 8800's and my Stacker. It is amazing what can get into the GPU's...

I gave you a shout out on a post I did about sli temperatures. That’s a fine piece of work Chaotic Yeti.
I’d like mine in 140 mm black please!

Next step is probably to go with a different fan, maybe a noctua. Might make a secondary bracket to hold a fan in my empty 5.25 bays.

Thanks Vadie! The benefit of having the 3d printer is that I can one off parts that are customized to my particular set up.

I wonder if there’s a way to place a rubber grommet of some sort to maintain the seal with the gpu’s without actually attaching the shroud to them. It’d be nice to mount the shroud in such a way that the gpu’s could be easily removed with the shroud left in place. I was actually looking around to see if such a shroud could be purchased once I realized the cooling limitations of the 780’s on air. I’m not exactly sure where I could get access to a 3D printer but thanks for sharing the link. Perhaps I’ll find someplace or if you’re interested and the price is right I could buy one from you.

I was thinking about this while my dog took me for my walk and I’m wondering if not attaching to the gpu’s would lead to issues with different board layouts. I’ll PM you and we’ll see what we come up with.

    BTW...

Also thinking of this while walking the dog lol...

I was wondering about capturing the fan (800D mind you) air at the bottom of the case at the same time adding a fan like you have. One full shroud taking air from both fans to the GPU's. As the 800D has a side fan that is also pulling air into the case through the HDD area... And let's be honest, the 800D is not a good airflowing case and this idea may be to focused on the GPU's, resulting in depleting the air needed for the rest of the system...

I could go crazy, making custom ducts and channels for air, but my case would just end up 100% plastic cause I wouldn't know when to stop

That's pretty nice. I'm in the same boat, but with 680's. Top two are in the low 70's, bottom one is low to mid 60's when playing demanding games or running benchmarks. If you're every going to sell these, I'd be interested in 1 for my 780's that I'm in the step-up queue for.
