Re: Don’t buy from Newegg! 2018/12/18 03:26:41 (permalink)

I have been following this thread for a few days and I’m concerned about what I’m reading. I have used Newegg for 15 years with no problems, but this really makes me want to change my shopping habits. Several people are saying the same thing. Aside from amazon, have you guys found b and h photo to be reliable? Any place else?

I looked at resellerratings and Newegg’s numbers are still pretty good. They are better than b and h. Where are you guys buying your motherboards, processors etc?

I use mainly Amazon - being Prime member I get free shipping on everything.
In some cases where it is EVGA product, I will sometimes buy direct from EVGA - like when the 2080 Ti was first released.

Yea, but it’s so hard to get in an order. I ordered my EVGA 2080 ti from Newegg in August and received it in September. Newegg seems to have the new stuff in stock before anyone else.

Ugh. I just got hit with this. My 2080 Ti XC was no good, sent it for replacement, they are out of stock and they changed it to refund. Had a combo deal with a 1600 T2, and they are trying to refund me so little I would end up paying $263 for the PSU when they sell it for $180!! Waiting to chat about it now. Wish I had just RMAed to EVGA.

I've now built three PCs - one in 2006, one in 2012, and one freshly made yesterday. This is the first rig where I have purchased every single component from Amazon. Everything- case included. The peace of mind that comes with knowing I can return an item - no questions asked - if a part is defective, damaged or already opened is incredible. To top it off, Amazon was cheaper than Newegg on almost everything.

Granted, I'm still pretty much a novice so assembly was painful and I haven't cursed so much since my last build. But it was still fantastic knowing that if something just doesn't work it will go back without hassle. Sometimes Amazon even refunds you before receiving an item. Or tells you to keep it. It's sensational really.

In contrast, in 2012 I ordered some expensive parts from Newegg and was terrified of encountering issues because it would likely delay my rig for weeks and possibly become a statistical horror story where an item is "lost" by the RMA department or claimed to be intentionally destroyed by the user. I remember recommendations to take high resolution pictures of CPUs (pins) and motherboards before sending them back. This was before Amazon had the same breadth of parts, with the same or better prices. And that was also before Newegg really started going down hill. I don't see any hope for Newegg to compete on the same scale with Amazon and manufacturers that do direct sales (such as EVGA), or even with Best Buy and Micro Center. I think that they will undercut already-opened or known to be defective items in a cycle that ultimately results in bankruptcy, and companies that offer controlled, predictable and reliable customer service will continue to pull ahead. I guess they changed owners but it doesn't seem to be working out too great based on the anecdotes in this thread.
