I have a Western Digital My Book Essential supporting USB 3 connected to the USB 3 port on my SR2. The problem is that it is like taking part in a lottery when it comes to my Windows 7 seeing this "My Book Essential". Sometimes it shows up under drives, sometimes not.  Mostly not, I must say. I connect it to one of the USB 2 ports, and get the pesky "This device can perform faster" message from Windows at boot up.

On the occasions when I am unable to connect, nothing helps. Not reconnecting the WD Book, not logging out and logging in again in Windows, only rebooting the PC [sometimes] helps.
Is there a way to fix this? I do want to use the USB 3 port, that is why I paid for this more expensive external harddisk.
Note: I have the latest BIOS (version 50)  and USB3 is indeed enabled in the BIOS.

Is your board overclocked? Do you have the auxiliary back panel power plugged in? (floppy power connector near the back panel)

I am not sure what you mean here! I feel dumb, I just do not understand what this is..

The picture above shows where a floppy power connector plugs in for extra power, it is required because the 24-pin is very par away. Also make sure you have the correct drivers installed for the controller.

antizax,
I have marked your reply as helpful because I think this might be the solution. I have not looked inside the box yet, but I cannot remember that I connected anything here. I just wonder where this is documented? I will not connect anything unless it is backed up with documentation,

Look at user manual or at large poster with photo of SR-2 on it. There is everything written in many languages. This poster should be inside your SR-2 box.

The information on the large poster may be useful for those who understand what it means. I am not one of those. And BTW, it says "optional", and in the manual there is no hint, in fact no text at all, telling me why I may want to connect something here, and especially nothing about how I can do it.
Among others, I have these cables that might fit the task:

Should I use cable 1 and just conect it, and just find a cable from my PSU that will fit (molex ?) and I am ok?

You must use the same type of cable which you are powering floppy drive which is connector style as shown on above photo with number 1.

Thanks, I will try this and report back. I also notice that the other two cables are impossible options..

Re:USB 3 sometimes work, sometimes not 2011/03/28 13:07:38 (permalink)

Ok, here is my report after adding power to this connector:
Fist and foremost, a BIG thank you to antizax, who has made my day.

After adding this so called "optional" power source to my SR2 mobo, my PC is not recognizable. While it has been a super PC from day one, with incredible power, it has at the same time been "something" with everything that has to do with USB. USB 2, USB 3 - everything. I have a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse, and the keyboard has been so flaky that it at times has been almost unusable. I got a USB extension cord, putting the radio sender 1 inch from the keyboard, it helped - a little.
After booting, and after the Windows welcome screen appeared, I often had to wait 1,2 and even 3 minutes before the PC responded to any keyboard or mouse activity. When at last responding, I had tons of strange typos, when letters I typed would come out in the wrong order. All of this is gone now. And the USB 3 external harddisk works as designed.

This "optional" power supply is a MUST - a big MUST.
The next thing I now will try, is my PCIe sound card which I had to ditch, maybe this one also will work now..

Again - do add power to this connection, all of you! And thank you again, all of you helping me with this

Re:USB 3 sometimes work, sometimes not 2011/03/28 13:58:07 (permalink)
You are very welcome ingvar. This "optional" power connection is required for most bus-powered usb devices.

There is also an optional, yet very necessary, power connection dedicated to PCIE slots 4-7, that may help your sound card if you had it plugged in one of those. It is a PCIE 6 pin connector, the location of this plug should be outlined on that poster.

Re:USB 3 sometimes work, sometimes not 2011/03/28 14:41:30 (permalink)
I can find two possible candidates for this.
1) 6 Pin required for Multi-GPU. This one I have connected to my PSU from day one
2) Optional 6 Pin PCI-E for CPU. There are two of these on the SR2 mobo, one located close to the PCIe slots, the other one far up on the right side of the mobo. They have a self adhesive label stuck on them, saying something like "Connect this for extreme overclocking". And these I have not connected since I do not overclock at all.
Firstly, do you think I should connect any of these under my point (2)? And secondly, I am a little curious about where I can fins some of the information you possess. All I can find is "Required for Multi-GPU",  nothing about that they are dedicated to any particular PCIE slots, like you write.
Any info appreciated

Printed next to the connector it sayd dedicated to PCIE 4-7 or something like that. It supplies slots 4-7 with power because they do not get any from the 24-pin, if you unplug it you will observe that the LEDs next to those slots will be off and they will be un-powered. If you've had that plugged in since the beginning then obviously something else is causing your sound card issue. I don't have any experience in using PCIE devices aside from GFX cards on the SR-2 so I can't help you there. There's bound to be a thread or two on here about it. Look for some of the threads in regards to RAID cards not functioning correctly, there me be something for you there as well because most have to do with the PCIE lane assignment. You have to remember half the slots are connected to NF200s and they are mere bridge chips designed for card to card communication.

Also no you do not need to use the auxiliary CPU power connections, I don't even use them and I overclock.

Re:USB 3 sometimes work, sometimes not 2011/03/28 15:55:10 (permalink)
Ok, thanks. When it comes to the PCIe sound card, I have given it up and am instead using a Moto 828 mk3 equivalent which does not use a PCIe card, instead it connects using USB High Speed. This is ok, and I accept the solution. Although it is 3 times as expensive and not exactly what I wanted. And I think it is not as fast as my original ESI 1010e, it is all about ASIO latency.. Well, I spent weeks trying to solve the PCIe sound card problems, way too much time..
Maybe I will look into it again, just for technical curiosity, to see if powering up the USB Floppy "optional" connector has helped here too.  I say it would be interesting :)

Sorry to dredge up such an old topic, but this thread is essential. Maybe should even be stickied.

Quick question though. I've yet to connect the back panel with the floppy connector and i'm trying to update my 3.0 drivers with the latest NEC / Renesas drivers but it keeps BSOD-ing on me. Is the floppy connector a solution to this?

EDIT: all other power connections are plugged in, and the latest A50 BIOS is installed.

Thanks guys.

I  have all the power ports plugged in and I cannot get USB 3 to work. Whenever I plug in my USB 3 drive, it says "This device can perform faster…" I have the latest firmware and drivers. The USB drive does work with USB 3 on a ASUS motherboard that I've tried.

How are you guys able to plug this Female (floppy drive) power connector into the female connector on the motherboard???
I have the same USB 3 issues and would love to get the power connected but I don't see how to use the black cable (your photo #1)..
Thanks for any additional info.

This has been asked a number of times before. The 4 pin USB supplemental power connector on the mobo is male, but it has a black protective cap on it. You need to remove the cap.

Just wondering if you sold your ESP1010e?  if not, do you want to?

Thanks
