The BOINC Manager used to run WCG is so similar between Windows and Linux that almost all of the instructions in AB's WCG@EVGA Installation thread can be used for an Ubuntu installation.   I'm stealing his steps from the first post of that thread and changing the part where the software is installed.

Our Team # is... 28262
  • Create a log in (Like you do here @ EVGA) (Link)
  • To install BOINC Manager, I recommend command-line installation via apt-get:
  • Open a terminal window (Applications / Accessories / Terminal)
    • Run the following command: sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager
    • Give root password if asked, and answer "Y" to continue the install
  • After the apt-get completes, you can find the BOINC Manager by going to Applications / Accessories / BOINC Manager.
  • During the set up screens you will be asked to attach to a project...choose The World Community Grid
  • You will also be asked to sign in...use the name and pw that you used when registering for the WCG.
  • The BOINC client once installed will download work units from one of the ten available projects :
  • Once the BOINC manager downloads the work units and starts crunching them you can choose the Advanced settings.
From here, if you are running 32-bit Ubuntu, you can go to the second post of AB's installation thread to continue tweaking your setup.

64-bit users: here is where things get tricky.  There are no 64 bit clients for WCG yet, but the BOINC manager asks for them by default.  If you get messages in the manager log like:
[error] App version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linux-gnu
[error] No application found for task: i686-pc-linux-gnu 617 ; discarding
then you will need to make a quick fix.

  • Again from the terminal window, enter sudo gedit /etc/boinc-client/cc_config.xml
  • When gedit pops up, you need to enter the following tag in the options section (in other words, add a new line somewhere between the line with <options> and hte line with </options>:
    • <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform>
  • Save the file and exit gedit
  • Now you need to restart BOINC using the following 2 commands in the terminal window:
    • sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client stop
    • sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start
  • At this point, you should be able to go back into BOINC Manager and things should be working normally.

I had wondered about Linux and WCG, you just shared the way.  Thanks Punchy!  I'll give that a try after I get Ubuntu installed on my 2600K rig.

You can also install 32-bit BOINC on 64-bit Linux and then the BOINC client will query for 32-bit apps by default.

I used the Synaptic Package Manger with Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit) and it worked flawlessly. Not sure what version you used or if you tried the Package Manager.

Select System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manger and search for boinc. Install the boinc-client & boinc manger. After the installations finish, select Applications > System Tools > BOINC Manager.

I have the same Linux version, but the package manager wasn't one of the two recommended installation methods on the WCG site.  I chose the apt-get path because it's much shorter (basically 2 things - open command window and run command) then their other alternative.
Does the package manager load the 32-bit version?  I don't see how else it work properly without manual intervention.

Yep, I would say 99% chance the same steps should work.  Let us know if they don't.
You could try David's method instead if you prefer using the package manager.

Does the package manager load the 32-bit version?  I don't see how else it work properly without manual intervention.

The first sentence recommends the package manager but the second sentence is a huge distraction.  "If your version of Linux has a package manager, you may wish to use that for installing the agent. If you are using Ubuntu, you can use sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager in the terminal to install the agent." The package manager has everything you can apt-get, right? I was thrilled when the shiny GUI worked and didn't require manual intervention. The entire WCG registration and setup process was very smooth and painless on Windows & Ubuntu. Ubuntu was actually a little easier. I'm not sure how to tell what version it loaded, Help > about says 6.10.58.

6.10.58 is a valid version and was a current version for Linux for a considerable time. However, BOINC in Linux is now up to version 6.12.34.

Ok Punchy, I installed via David's method but I needed to apply your quick fix. Thanks a lot for posting it.
2 more cores added to the cause and crunching.
Mint seems a little easier for me so it's good to know that it worked out.
Thanks guys!

It's strange how I didn't need the quick fix. I setup a Folding@home GPU client and this but besides that it's a normal Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit) system. I'll have to try one of my other systems when I find the time and energy.

Being an old Red Hat Enterprise guy, the "package manager" thing threw me off - to me that means rpm, which is already a command-line thing.
Based on linuxrouter's comment about 32-bit, I tried something a little different on a new 10.10 64-bit installation.  First I installed the 32-bit gcc libraries with the Synaptic package manager, then the BOINC package.  That works fine without the extra fix.  David, maybe you already had the 32-bit libraries installed from your kernel rebuild.
P.S.  Synaptic is under System / Administration rather than System / Preferences, at least on my system.

gcc-4.4-multilib

David, can I link from my first post to your post in this thread for folks that want to use the GUI package manager?

Re:Ubuntu WCG@EVGA Installation (with 64-bit fix) 2011/12/02 09:25:18 (permalink)
I don't have that package installed.

I found the following links and have ia32-libs, libstdc++6 and freeglut3.

http://www.dslreports.com...-6.12.34-for-Linux-x64
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BOINC  (See Installing boinc-client on ubuntu server (no GUI)

So maybe this will work (I'm not sure what packages will already be installed but it doesn't hurt to try again.):
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs libstdc++6 freeglut3 boinc-client boinc-manager
Need somebody to test and of course you can add to your post.

Is there a speed difference between Windows and Linux (Ubuntu)?

edit: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?272591-Ubuntu-or-Windows-for-WCG&p=4891432&viewfull=1#post4891432

"Linux will complete more results per day. But the credit you receive for each result will generally be lower than with Windows."
"Why?" you ask...
"It's a combination of Linux punching through the work faster but getting worse benchmark scores. Less time x lower benchmark gives less points. Since WCG keeps assuring us that the work units are the same logic would suggest that the OS getting the work done faster should get higher benches. Knowing that it doesn't suggests the benchmarks are skewed somehow. While it would be possible to get all hissy about that, there's no point. The whole point of this is to get the work done as best as you can."

Re:Ubuntu WCG@EVGA Installation (with 64-bit fix) 2011/12/02 10:00:01 (permalink)
lib32gcc1 is a component of gcc-4.4-multilib so that probably got you the necessary 32-bit libraries.  I actually wanted to install just the ia32-libs as shown in that apt-get example but did not see them in Synaptic.
If I get a chance I'll try to pare it down to the minimum apt-get line.  I would guess that libstdc++6 is already installed by default on 10.10 (32 or 64 bit), and "boinc" can replace "boinc-client boinc-manager".
Using Synaptic, the bare minimum may be "boinc" and "lib32gcc1", but I know that at least for me, simply using "boinc" and "gcc-4.4-multilib" works.
I'm not sure how freeglut3 plays into this - maybe it's already installed by default or is a dependency of another package, but I haven't had to install it manually on either 10.10 system I'm running.

I doubt it.
In my case, just trying to throw together systems with old parts, spit and glue. I don't want to shell out cash on these, but save for some meaningful build in the future.
