Well without thinking much I ordered a NOCTUA FAN (none water cooled fan that fit a 2011-v3) for the CPU... Bad mistake..... the Noctua Fan is to big and covers the first slot of the X99 mother boards x16 PCI buss card slot.  After researching this some, if you use more than a 4 core CPU your just about stuck with water cooling.  Since I opted for a Thermaltake V51 case it is not a big deal, case is made for water cooling.

The 28 buss CPU only uses the first slot for the x16 Video buss.  <--- Make sure you understand this.!

So new builders be aware your going to be using water cooled stuff most likely.     Like most of you I was over cooling just to make sure things worked well.

If you mean by AIO, then sure.  A premium air cooler could perform just as good, if not better but as you said, they're very big heatsinks that take lots of space which you don't have much on the X99.

I've got a 5820K that I had under both a Phanteks PH-TC14PE and a Noctua NH-D14. Both are great, but both cover up the first PCIE slot of my X99 Classified board - which I knew about because I did a google search and found out prior to purchase.

I recently decided to upgrade to a NVME SSD in a m.2 to PCIE adapter card, and knew that with my 28 lane CPU that would be an issue with my PCIE slot speeds and arrangement, and my GPU was already running at X8.

So I got a Corsair H115i and slapped in a pair of Noiseblocker NB-eLoop B14-3's to replace the REALLY REALLY REALLY LOUD (at the Performance setting) stock fans. It's a tiny bit louder than my D14 or Phanteks at 100% (the eLoops aren't PWM), but also cools my 5820K a few degrees C better AND I've got all 28 CPU lanes fully utilized with X16 for graphics, X8 for discrete RAID card, and X4 for my m.2 to PCIE adapted NVME SSD.

Oh, and the only reason why I ever considered going back to an AIO water cooler is the fact that Corsair has a 5 year warranty now. I had issues with their pumps dying years and years ago, after just 2 years if I remember correctly.

I currently use a Noctua NH-D9L and with my super hot 5820K it keeps it below throttling points at 4ghz (my cpu is a really leaky chip meaning it consumes more power and runs hotter than most others)

I even ran it temporarily on an NH-L9x65, though it was very hot and even less intensive h264 encoding was causing throttling.

There's also the NH-U9S cooler, which is supposed to be a little better than the D9L (by a couple C ish), yet imo it doesnt look quite as good.

All 3 of those coolers fit fine with tall ram and a gpu in the first slot on a very cramped X99 Micro 2 board.

I'll likely be swapping out the D9L to a H110i or some other 280mm slim rad cooler. Depends what my case can fit (the top fan mounts are too close to the edge panel to fit some rads).

Basically you should do a bit more research before buying a big cooler which is known to have compatibility issues. (I borrowed the L9x65 from my spare pc, knowing my system would be hot, but i had no other choice till the D9L arrived).

If anyone is interested in AIO then look no further than Enermax's LiqMax2. It's so darn quiet it's unbelievable. It's also much cheaper than LiqMax1, but still built like a tank. Corsair H***i series vs LiqMax1/2, I pick Enermax every time. I have Corsair too and pump is ridiculously loud. Internet is filled with horror stories of leaking Corsairs, most often seals between fitting and tube. Last time I was talking about this less than week ago with guy where H100i fried his 970. IMHO LM2 is best deal on the market when we talk 120/240mm AIOs. The most important fact - LM family is not some lousy Asestek re-brand.

After looking at that AIO, it looks like a rebrand just like the other ones.  It doesn't look like a in house design plus Asetek has all those type of design patents on lock down.  They've been busy suing.

I beg to disagree. Enermax is more or less re-brand yes, but of Lepa. It's designed and manufactured by Apaltek.

As for retarded patent troll which Asetek really became, I hope that everybody copies them. Then they can try to sue whole world. LOL

OEM info is available for example here (Enermax does not reveal OEM, but determined users will find-out anyway he, he)

From my understanding, after suing everyone and their mothers already lol and might still have some cases pending, they patented the design of a CPU block with a pump on it so no one can design anything, even odds shapes I THINK but could be wrong of such design.  I know they've gone after Swiftech, Coolermaster, Corsair to name a few off the top of my head.

I'm all for protecting one's intellectual property and designs but I agree, there's a fine line how far that should go because it can stifle innovation.

I wish they sued EK over Predator line. I would probably die laughing if they pursued this AIO-suing nonsense any further. :D

Technically Cooler Master products or Swiftech (or EK) are not AIO. These are not permanently sealed, you can expand, change stuff. I'll never understand corporations. There is no logic, only money.

I was in a similar clearance issue with a different cpu cooler.
The Noctua NH D15S should take care of your PCIe slot #1 clearance issues.  Its asymmetrical design works very well.  Check your chassis clearance.  160mm height is required.
No water cooling needed for me.

Unfortunately, the Noctua NH D15S is incompatible with all EVGA X99 motherboard,
there is a compatibility list from noctua website.

To fit EVGA X99 FTW K motherboard,
a biggest cpu air cooler i can found is thermalright TRUE Spirit 120i

I have an x99 ftw board and I was able to fit an evo 212 with push/pull fans. I had just enough room to fit gpu into 1st pci slot (wasnt touching heatsink) and have corsair vengeance ram underneath. It did make it alot harder to make adjustments if i needed to remove ram, gpu etc, but it fit just fine nevertheless. It did a pretty good job keeping my 5930k cool too, never went over 55C with OC of 4.2 ghz.

    i7 5930K@4.2, x99 evga ftw, H115i AIO, 16gb (4x4) corsair LPX veng@2666mhz, evga 1000w G psu, evga 970gtx ref, 1TB evo samsung SSD, stryker "storm trooper" case.
