3650 PPD is low for a 9800 GT that card should be at least in the 5000 PPD range for most units. I'm saying this cause that card has 112 shaders.

For comparison I had a 9600 GT with 64 shaders that did between 3200 - 3800 and a 8800 GTS with 96 shaders that did between 3800 - 4200

Statistically there were a few interruption in the last week and I expect to see the average go up a bit, however when checking the statistics it never rose above 4172 24h AVG on any given day with a low of 3385 upon closer examination I have 6 full days of folding with an avg of 3808 PPD.

http://folding.extremeove...ry.php?s=&u=454775

As of this writing 3662 is my 24hr Avg. I wonder what I need to do to get this average up as you say for an average 9800GT. I'd prefer to leave it stock clocks because I don't want any additional noise, wear an tear, or energy usage but I want this average where it should be. In any case I want to know what I can do to get this number up what ever is needed.

well folding@home relies on just the shader speed of the card, what you can do is lower the Core Clock and Memory Clock slightly, and raise the shader clock some more. the PPD should go up.

I tried using Precision and got a BSOD remember the OS is WHS basically Windows 2003 server. Loading drivers and such can be a bit tricky. I'd probably have to approach that from a bios level OC on the shader clock and I'm not sure it worth all that. Are there others ways to boost productivity like prioritize or get better work units etc.?

unfortunately no :( you only get whatever units stanford sends you, if thier was a way to force specific units nobody would do the slower ones and everyone will just battle for the faster ones, and I'm sure stanford wouldn't like that.

Sorry I didn't realize you were on a server os either.

Is there another tool I can try to manipulate the Shader Clock like maybe atitool etc?

Re:9800GT $50 after rebate 2010/09/21 12:03:05 (permalink)
Another update I was trying to open Precision from remote desktop which is why I was not able to open it even the client I have to go to a monitor connected to the server in order to see both and and adjust.

As far as the PPD I have managed to reach a couple conclusions.

The total PPD is largely dependent on work units given out whcich seem to range day to day.

I have gotten close to 5000 PPD but have not broken that.

It's currently running at 602cc 1604sc 1000mc at stock volts.
A steady 68c operating temp with fan set at 75%

I'm on track to break 100000 this month which was my goal.

High PPD so far is 4991 and low of 3750.

All in all I say not bad for a $50 GPU

If things stay on track it will pay for itself in ten months with EVGA bucks.

others have reported that using remote desktop runs it's own video driver which can cause problems with folding maybe also your bsod with precision?

I have had decent luck with the freebie version of realvnc, but it is not supported under win64(paid version maybe?)  I also used teamviewer, but stopped when I got another kvm setup.  I think others also like logmein.

nice to hear it has worked out for you!

for ref here is a nice trouble shooting guide:

Thanks esbarlan for the link I had missed that post.

I'm not sure how effective the changes will be but if effective I think that thread should be stickied.

Changes made:

  1. Changed 3d setting from Quality to Performance
  2. Set Process priority to Realtime for Folding@home.exe
  3. Acquired a Passkey and entered it in to the client config.
I had not seen these tweaks suggested or recommended in any of the setup or installation threads I've read here or other places.

Questions:

Where can I see if I have completed 10 A3 work units?
How can I verify above the 80% completion rate?

I've tried going to
http://folding.extremeove...ry.php?s=&u=454775

and of course Stanford's site and I have installed the latest FahMon but I did not see a way to get at either for an answer.

Any help appreciated.

check here by inputting your passkey to see how many work units(wu) have completed under the passkey only:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstats

I thought it showed your completion % in your FAHlog.txt file after it completed a wu and sent in it's results.  I do not have one in my log file to check right now.

P.S.  fahmon is older and no longer updated.  It will not calc points per day (ppd) correctly because of the bonus for early completion.  hfm.net is better, and preferred by most.  You just need some version of .net or mono running.

In the link provided above you will the quote pulled from there below.

Not Getting bonus Points
  • Make sure you have a passkey Here
  • You must have completed 10 A3 workunits before you will start receiving bonus points
  • Check to see if you are completing the workunits before the deadline
  • Make sure you have a windows password ( Windows password is no longer required with the latest version (6.30))
  • Make sure you are above the 80% completion rate (too many failed/ late wus will drop you below) to remain eligible for the bonus

Notes in Red are what I was questioning

I will check your new link out now and see what that's about

the link sends you to Stanfords stats page where you can enter your passkey and it will tell you how many work units you have folded with that passkey.  wu previously folded without a passkey do not count towards the ten.  The first ten you fold will only give you the base points, or what is reported by fahmon.  A3 wu are the current std wu for smp2 with -advmethods flag.  I can't remember what you get without advmethods.  Your fahlog.txt file will list something like

"Core required: FahCore_a3.exe"

hfm.net will also display which core you are using.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstats

  • Check to see if you are completing the workunits before the deadline

  • Make sure you are above the 80% completion rate (too many failed/ late wus will drop you below) to remain eligible for the bonus

So with the cpu client(SMP2) you can get bonus points(points on top of the base points reported by fahmon) from turning in your wu before the preferred deadline.  The earlier you submit the higher your bonus.

You generally don't have a problem to keep 80% completion rate unless your cpu overclock is not stable for fah or your cpu is too slow for the deadlines.  I see a lot more gpu client wu fail than cpu.  Once they hit a stable overclock I don't think anyone has a problem meeting 80%.  Your phenom II x2 should be fine if running 24/7, but I do not know the specific fah performance for it.  My intel e1500 dual core w/o hyperthreading met the deadlines barely so it's ppd were less than ~1k.

Notes in Red are what I was questioning

I will check your new link out now and see what that's about

I hope this clears up your questions/concern, if not then I am completely misunderstanding you, so if anyone else catches what I am missing please reply also.

Thanks a bunch that's exactly what I wanted to know I appreciate you taking the time to help. I hope these tweaks will make a difference.

Only time will tell for sure.

I installed FahMon on the server and it seems very limited like you say. I'm somewhat concerned about trying the other app but I shall in the near future.

I've all but stopped using the CPU client since I added the 9800 and not sure if I will start it back up. Seems to me the PPD was pretty low

one last thought hfm.net can be installed on any pc that can browse to the fah work folders.  so if you have sharing setup on those directories/folders then you can monitor with any pc(win/osx(needs wine or mono)/linux(needs wine or mono)).

Nothing to worry about with HFM.net. Just make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installed.. then follow this guide: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=410857

good luck making your goal!

Yep that's exactly what I did. First I went to the server SYS (C:) C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Folding@home-GPU to share that folder on the network. Then I downloaded the zip extracted it to a file on my local PC. Opened the exe then clicked on Clients then Add Client. In the resulting dialog I named it  then pointed to the log file location which is in the "Folding@home-GPU" folder. For anyone interested in doing the same, there is no need to point to the log file it self just the Folding@home-GPU folder which is now a network share. The address will look like this>>  \\xxxxxxSERVER\Folding@home-gpu\ Once you click ok to finish wa la it should be working like a champ it takes a moment for all the info to load way more info and useful. Again thanks guys for the heads up.
