"Facts" are interesting things.  I find that word is being thrown around way too much here.

Let's acknowledge things for what they are.  Most of the things you guys are talking about are NOT facts.  They are subjective OPINIONS that differ from person to person.

No, when a game makes you sick (literally) its bad. When a game uses the same graphics engine from about 20 million years ago that looked like crap when it came out well its fact the graphics are bad. When you're using sounds that were made by hitting a tin can the sound is bad. When you use gameplay from 5-6 years ago without taking into account new trends then your game is bad. When you have a story that makes action movies look like documentaries you have a really bad game.

It wasn't meant as a personal attack. Those are just, seriously, the worst games ever made.

Nothing in there was directed in a harmful way at you Xray, I even decided to give some valid points instead of just calling them terrible.

My thoughts are that some people need to branch out for simple mainstream FPS games and try some real games. Then, maybe, you'll realize how terrible the games you're playing are. :p

The Witcher 1 & 2:  Personally think these 2 games have the best stories in all video games.
Oblivion/Skyrim:  The games are good on their own but the mod community for Elder Scrolls makes them great.
Final Fantasy VII:  The first FF game I played and by far my favorite.
KOTOR:  Bioware's best game imo.  Every time I play a Mass Effect game I feel like I'm playing KOTOR w/o lightsabers.
GTA III thru San Andreas:  GTA III was a masterpiece and the series just got better and better with each installment.  GTA IV is good but it just never had the "fun factor" that the previous ones had.
Battlefield 2:  I sucked at BF2 and I still spent several hundred hours playing this game.  It actually felt satisfying when you won the round or happened to be the top player/class.

There is a really great saying that goes something like..... "Live and LET live.."  Erm, or something to that effect.  I mean really just chill out and enjoy what you enjoy!

you have to be careful with how you word things, if someone says, "COD is a good game!" I'm gonna call them out on it because COD isn't a good game. If someone says, "I like COD" I'll ask why but I can't say no you don't like it and I won't get mad (i'll just think they have terrible taste in video games, kinda like of someone buys Apple products). This thread is titled "best video games you've bought" well if COD is the best then you've bought really bad games. If this thread was called, "video games you've enjoyed most" then I'd be less likely to talk about how terrible COD is. (Please note my thread, games you most regret, I mention there's worse games then COD/BF3 but none have caused as much regret as the two of those).

I don't see why there is so much hate against BF3. Its really a great game. The only way you cannot have fun playing is if you suck or are just bored of it.

As for call of duty. The reason why most people hate it is because it never changes. People expect such big changes when a new game from a series comes out, and when they see what COD has done it makes them sick.

(I personally am bored of BF3 and I am tired of the simple pvp that was COD back at around COD 4)

Ok so here is my list. Not in any particular order either.
Left 4 Dead 2 (spent 1500 hours and made about 100 friends in that game. Even owned a server that made it to the top 25 on gametracker.com... Money well spent.)

Zelda Ocarina of Time (yea you know it)

Crysis  (omg the graphics still to this day are top notch! Driving the pickup truck super fast through the rice paddies and then jumping out last second before crashing and exploding into an enemy humvee.. need i say more?)

Halo 1&2 (I owned in this when I was a teenager on my xbox)

Goldeneye N64 Version
Perfect Dark N64 version

umm.. thats about it.
BF3 and BC2 didnt make it onto my list because the impact they made on me wasnt as great as the above games.

Oh wait.. how can i forget. DAYZ!!
Even though now I am bored of it and pretty much have done everything you can possibly do. It still is an amazing concept for a game and I cannot wait to see how the standalone plays out.

These 2 I never bought but they made a big impact on me when I played them.
GTA 3 (Obviously amazing because it was the first GTA to go 3D)

Soldier of Fortune 2 ( No other game had such awesome gore. You could literally blow off half his head or his whole head, or half the arm or the whole arm.. god it was great!)

You sound like you're mad bro.  I'm just sayin.'

You realize though, that someone saying, "COD is a good game!" is a SUBJECTIVE OPINION though right?!?!  Just as the inverse of the aforementioned statement is also a SUBJECTIVE OPINION.

It just makes no sense to care so much about what other people like to play.  I'm not saying voicing an opinion is bad or anything, but there are about 5-6 people on the board that just go OUT OF THEIR WAY to constantly complain about various game choices by other people.  It's just strange.

I don't own, nor have I particularly cared for any CODs, but I just don't care if someone else does.

while i am not a fan of cod. it is far better then diablo3 or dragon age 2. i would think you would call those out first.

i personally don't see the issue of people commenting about  peoples picks. it isn't personal if someone disagrees with you list. the only ones that seem mad to me are the ones who get upset that someones thought there pick was bad. we all have different taste we all won't agree on games it not a bad thing if people don't like the same things

Here are MY best games I have bought... This is MY OPINION!

Now in no particular order:
Delta Force (1, 2, Land Warrior, Task Force Dagger, and Black  Hawk Down didn't care for the extemes)
Rainbow 6: Ravenshield (along with Athena Sword and Iron  Wrath.. IMO probably one of the best FPS ever made)
Soldier of Fortune (even though there were way too many  controls the game was awesome)
Medal of Honor (the original)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (much fun)
BF1942, BF:Vietnam, BF2, BC2, BF2142 and BF3 (along with all  the expansions for each game... BF series is flat out awesome)
Metro Man (yes I'm going console also)
Contra
and last but not least...
All the Gran Turismos

I don't see why there is so much hate against BF3.

Conceptually, it's a very cool game. Implementation and playerbase is where it falls on it's face. Personally, I find it a hostile game.

Most of the mainsteam fps titles posted above +MORTAL COMBAT!

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was including that with my older consoles since my first mk game was the original (which i still have) on my sega genesis.  i stopped after ultimate MK3 and didnt pick it up again till deadly alliance but even deadly alliance was a 3d type and that is what i didnt care for (i liked the 2d)

also another fighting game i liked was primal rage, i got a good laugh out of the chaos character (how could you not i mean a farting belching puking gorilla nuff said :D )

Xantac

Well....my favorite games have been plz dont flame i know most dont like these
1 Alice:madness returns, .art design in that games Sik

nothing wrong with this game IMHO i have it on my 360 and i actually like it i guess i like the dark and evil spin on the alice in wonderland universe :D

bclmax

Il2 1946, modded UP3.  still the best ww2 aircombat game

Company of Heroes. same maps over and over in ranked games but still the best RTS going.

Hearts of Iron 1,2 and 3.

try the dawn of war series for rts they are pretty good to, its just based on teh 40k universe instead of WWII

ARCTIC_EAGLE

No, when a game makes you sick (literally) its bad.

well just going by this logic  of yours EVERY first person shooter out there is bad to me, i dont really care for any of them.  closest i get to fps games is warhammer 40k space marine (thats only cause i am big into the warhammer 40k stuff)

Enad1

I ain't even mad.

See, my avatar shows that I'm sad.

dude seriously if your going to bash on others for liking games that you dont i would suggest you go back to hiding in that little corner in the back of the building playing pac-man.

you have your opinions as do everyone else but to jump up and say what you did to xray was (IMHO) ignorant.  there were 2 other options available to you which were:

1. ask him why he liked those games
2. keep your opinion to yourself and your keys off of the keyboard.

we all have opinions of good games and not everyone will like the same thing which is perfectly acceptable.  i really would hope that in the future you would think before you type a response to someone.

killer instinct was a good game.  lets see for arcade machines i liked sinistar, tron, marvel superheros (at least i think that was the name), xmen COTA, darkstalkers (course i like darkstalker games on anything LOL).  basically i guess my preference is fighting and rts. unless it is arcade or console and then im into a multitude of stuff with the exception of fps games which i dont care for at all.

i personally would like to know what everyones favorite all time arcade machine favorite was (of course i bet alot of members here have never even seen or know what an arcade machine is LMAO cause they are probably to young to know or remember which sadly i cannot say LOL)

Killer Instinct has one of the best theme songs I've heard.  I seem to remember getting pretty angry playing that game though lol.

Re:What were some of the best games you ever purchased/played? 2012/09/03 08:24:33 (permalink)
I define a great or best game purchase as one I still play or have an ability to still play, my favorite game titles are bolded if you just want to skim through my post.
  • I'm not into MP, just SP.
  • I'm more about gameplay (what I can do) than graphics (what I can see) because I can always get better hardware cheaper in a few years.  I grew up low-end, I consider high quality a benefit or bonus, I don't depend on it.

Age of Mythology appeared in 2002, I bought it twice as I lost the disk in between then and now; I love this game, it is unlike any RTS I've ever played and since.  I played the campaign a few times completely though honestly, but I think the reason I still play it is because of the cheat-codes, they literally add a new dimension since even at the hardest difficulty, I can't beat the game.  To me, it isn't about winning the game anymore, that is boring; I like doing other things and sometimes try a different way of playing.

One thing I have noticed, using the cheat-codes, you can enable a higher population that the game originally intended with the hardware of a decade ago.  Unfortunately is it a single-threaded game, but I've been able to use 100% of one core in my i7-920, and despite being at 3.6GHz, it'll still lag if the population goes above 300.  RTS' in general are CPU-intensive because of all the A.I. characters and CPU-physics, so clearly this would be my motivation in only choosing Intel next time.  Graphics isn't a big deal, it is a pre-DX9 game that doesn't exceed 128MB of Vram.  Ultimately, I'd like to see between 500-1000 units running smoothly on the screen (especially since I know the game is multi-monitor capable, in fact all my games are), so I hope one-day a future processor can handle that.   Considering how slowly Intel revolves, it is disheartening.

Oh yeah, because it is a decade old, certainly graphics isn't best; but that's not why I play it, I play it because I make it fun.

Same deal with Halo 2 for PC, granted I start on the game on a roomates Xbox and then took a break for about four years until I got it for PC (because I was on XP for a long time until I got a laptop with Win7).  But if it wasn't for exchanging weapons with allies and for them it is infinite ammo, in addition to Johnson and the Covenant Leader being immortal in the game; I wouldn't still be playing the game to this day.  In effect, they are a series of cheat codes that runs all the way through.  They weren't options in the first Halo, I'm worried if those options aren't there in other titles as if would be a make-or-break situation for me.  I've never looked into the Halo 3 on up storylines or game aspects as I don't want to ruin my experience with hyped up expectation.

Speaking of which, I've held out a long time in the hopes that MS would port the other Halo titles to PC, but it looks like that is their exclusive series for the console which-- since I don't care for other Xbox games-- would be an expensive exclusive game package and thus why I've been hesitant.  That machine would only be 'on' for Halo, I cannot justify the other uses which would only cannibalize my PC, which I can't justify to loose.  As this point I'm still waiting, definitely curious if old Halo 2 aspects are preserved in the rumored Halo 2 Anniversary Edition and whether the next Xbox plays older games.

One game I never bought, because I only played it at the local library as a child on an old Mac, called A-train, was my first PC game and I always wanted to get back into that type of RTS; closest equivalency was "Sid Meier's Railroads" through Steam, and it brings back the old pastimes.  Graphics are better (20 years will do that), train variety, ease of track layout; the game makes you think of speed and time and money together, didn't have to do that before.   I don't play it often, but because I still play it, I count it as a "best purchase".

I liked the first Crysis despite not having the best computer at the time; of course again, the cheat-codes made it fun.  I liked using the flymode to round up a bunch of Koreans early in the game so they shoot at Chino (who's immortal) and doesn't shoot back but only says "ow" over and over again.   I found there is a limit to local Korean population before they kill each other trying to kill Chino.

Crysis 2, cheat codes don't work (yet), but the game is fun nonetheless (most fun in the middle where a bunch of allies spawn but die fast due to the aliens nearby, I just don't interact and watch from a distance and see weapons pile up), it looks great even on my laptop, so I'm not likely to complain about graphics.  Achieved over 400,000 nanocatalyst points I don't know what to do with.

I'm glad there is a Crysis 3 as well as a Halo 4 coming, haven't read too much up on either, but getting into them will always be a question of 'when'.  I don't jump on bandwagon, I usually wait after a game debuts before I get on board for any number of reasons from being picky on maintaining my 1-2 new games per year collection rate to waiting until I can afford the upgrade to make playing the game at least on medium possible.  For instance, my second computer had a Pentium D 920 and GeForce 7950GT, even at 1280x1024, the first Crysis demo on lowest settings could barely do 17FPS-- which while I could tolerate it for the sake of gameplay, I wasn't willing to buy the game until I upgraded the system about 2 yrs later; then I could play at least medium at 23-30FPS which was good enough for me.

So of course I'm keeping track of many talked-about titles since my last upgrade such as Lost Planet 2, Cryostasis, Metro 2033, etc; but I stick to SciFi games.  I'm not into the CoD or BF series at all, though the only fictional wargame I have is World in Conflict (and according to Steam I have over 440 hours on it), but it is an RTS and not a shooter.   Used to play the first F.E.A.R. a lot, tried the demo for the second, not the third.  Not that I don't like them, just I'm picky about how many games I get.

Let's see, what else can I include?  I have a SNES emulator and while I only played Donkey Kong Country on it, lately I've converted the game soundtrack to disk and play it in my car.  I've done that to Halo 2 and Age of Mythology, both have incredible soundtracks.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].
