What is the Motherboard LCD sensor measuring?

The temperaturethat it reports (in celcius) is always around 15 c cooler than my cores (i7-920) as reported by coretemp.

It mesures system temp, and it will always be 10-15 below core temps

Bottom right hand corner. You have to set it in the bios, otherwise it will just display FF.

    Thanks,

What is EVGA's views on the maximum safe system temperature?

System should be below 70°c which is rather hot actually.

If you are looking at the vreg sensor or chipset those could get to low 90's°c and still be okay.

    Thanks

I know the LED display is in the bottom right-hand corner, but where is the sensor that feeds it?  There's some text on my mb next to the display that says "CPU temp".  So maybe the display is the CPU IHS.  It follows the ups and down of the core temps too quickly and closely to be some diode or transistor on the mb.

Yeah, it's reading the heatspreader temp from the CPU, so the temp sensor is actually built into your CPU.

FYI, the "System Temp" sensor, a.k.a. motherboard temp, is located here:

    Thanks,

I've never been anywhere near 70.  Depending on the ambient room temperature, the idle and minimum load temperature has been between 22 and 37, usually around 32 or 33.  When maing out all 4 cores with normal applications, it has been as high as 52.  When stress testing with Prime 95 or Linx, it has never gotten hotter than 61.

Thanks Davabled!  Do you where the mb temp is on the X58 micro board?  How's the sensor labeled on the Classy - D something or Q something, or ???  May look for it with a can of freeze spray.

I assume it's located in roughly the same spot on the micro board - in such a way that it's measuring the temp towards the rear of the expansion slots.  It's labeled with a "Q" on my board .  On the 759 Classified I have, the sensor is standing off the board on it's legs a little bit, and looks like a regular transistor (I assume it is a silicon bandgap temperature sensor. )  Not sure about other boards or revisions though, so testing with a can of air might be the best way to for you to find it.

Thanks Davabled!  I'll post back if/when I find it on the micro board.  How did you find it on your classy?  How do you use it?
